You know, if you made the worms a bit bigger, and put them in a desert map...perhaps they could leave spice behind....

You've got your Dune in my Minecraft! D:

EDIT: I know, I know double post.

You're not just going to be able to open your magic compost bin for all your soil needs. These bins are meant to serve two functions.

Well, you could just make 20 compost bins to get pretty much instantly soil...?
Other than that it sounds like a great improvement to the game.

Sure, if you have 160 wooden blocks and twenty blocks of soil that you'd like to make compost bins out of.

You'd still have to give them stuff to compost, though.

    And stuff to compost, yeah.

I'm thinking the dirt you get from compost bins is grass!
This way you don't need a staircase for your sky farms so the grass can go up.

I entertained that thought as well. I'm not sure how much sense it would make, but I can't deny the practicality.

Ahh alright, I didn't realize they used to spawn with wool already. But I am sure that they don't regain their wool without eating, as the sheep I had in caves would never regain theirs.

Ah, well I'll believe that. Never really payed much attention to them while they ate, and it does make sense.

Sorry. It had to be said.

I don't even know what infiniminer is.

It is the almighty scourge, thankfully it died, AND IT'S GOING TO STAY THAT WAY!!!

Infiniminer was ****ing bomb, and it directly inspired this game. I don't know what you mean by "almighty scourge".

I'm all for recycling and a method to live entirely underground. However, soil deems like the least of our renewing resources troubles. Still, thinking this up doesn't detract from other ideas for more interesting systems for rarer materials.

But yeah, compost seems best. Perhaps there could be a distinction between fertile soil and normal soil, fertile allowing food to grow better than normal soil. As it stands it takes quite a bit of work to waste soil even if you want to do it.

Right, Droqen fleshed out the whole fertile soil thing above. And for me, it's never enough work to waste soil. I've become quite the cave-mudder as of late and I've been trying to think up ways to make things a little more interesting. I've also wondered if we may some day have themes that have little or no soil in their maps, but crafty players will still have a way to plant their grain. Thanks for the comment!

I liked this when it was brought up briefly somewhere else, and I love your implementation. I don't think it'd be too hard to have a 2x1 chest split the resources and leave some in the mimic. Not a big deal, but some players don't bother with small chests, and we wouldn't want them to miss out on all of this fun. :biggrin.gif:

I'm wondering if it's too hard to simply place the chest on the nearest block? If it is, the chest could "explode" into eight wood blocks, to be dropped with all of its former contents.

I agree but I still see absolutly no reason for it. But no giant worms.

Well, I've just had a few times where my chests were full of tree seeds and I feel bad wasting anything. There might not be a lot of uses for soil right now, but later on we might need it for more than some special cases. I like Droqen's ideas below.

    Quote from Droqen »
I like it. The compost idea, anyway, but you've already mentioned that the worms might not be great.

What of some kind of "fertile soil"? You would have two different types of soil, and it might be randomly spread across the map. Or maybe just topsoil. In any case... compost would produce the slightly more rare and more useful type of soil.

Aside from that, a way to find fertile soil might be to look at where trees and flowers are growing, as they would be more likely to grow on more fertile soil.

( Fertile soil might grow grass faster, grow taller trees?, spread other plants faster if there are ever any plants other than grass who spread on their own, and finally make crops (should they ever come into existence) grow faster, or at all. )

Anyway, all-in-all I think it's a great idea. I've never personally run out of soil... but if anyone were to, this seems like an excellent way to replenish it.

I wonder if there will be more dirt uses in the future.

Yeah, the worms were the first idea that came to my mind, but after thinking about worms and how they're used in real life, it led to the better idea. I figured I'd leave them here anyway, in-case someone finds inspiration for a different idea from them.

I really like the idea of fertile soil, and I like that it only does only what regular ground can do, just a bit better. Perhaps some kinds of plants would only grow on this special soil? I'm trying to think of ways to differentiate visually, though. Perhaps there wouldn't be a difference on the surface when it's covered in grass, but from the side or when it has no grass over it, it could have darker spots of pure soil in it, so the trained eye can discern fertile soil from non-fertile.

    Thanks for the comment!

This is a perfect example of constructive community solutions at work. I for one have been wondering how to fix this problem but would never had thought of something so efficient.
P.S. - Love the worms Idea, maybe worms could place blocks too, to create a dynamically changing landscape.

Thanks! It was kind of the worms that led me to the compost bin idea, and if I didn't need a way to get soil more conveniently, I probably wouldn't have thought of it at all!

To preserve the challenge of the game, granting unlimited resources in high volumes is a bad idea.

I know what ya mean but that's just incredibly redundant.

neat and fun to read, and I like the worm idea. Maybe Notch will make pet wormz!!!!! >:biggrin.gif:

The sentence was redundant? Well I admit it was structured a bit strangely but to each his own. I'll change it up a bit for clarity. Thanks a lot for the support!

We have a lack of soil? I had no idea...

No, I wouldn't expect you to understand so quickly. One day, Eztuzt, you're going to run out of soil. You're going to actually manage to run out of soil, and then, running across the barren rocky wastes that you've left behind with your wanton soil-digging methods to find the last bit of dirt left, you're going to realize how incredible I am.

    Also,

    Quote from jockmo42 »
    Q. Isn't renewable soil kind of pointless? There's soil everywhere!

    A. Yes, but only for so long. Massive projects that require soil may find it more and more difficult to obtain. Having a small buffer down by the work site could really help to streamline soil collection, but not to the point where it's easier to have a compost bin than to go and dig it yourself. Compost bins require organic materials to create soil, and they're only meant to augment a soil operation, not replace manual labor. What if you only needed a block of soil? Would you run up sixty stories of stairs, across the wasteland of exposed stone to what soil is left far from your cave, grab a few and run all the way back, or would you grab a bit from the compost bin and be done with it?

... compost bins will give players another little project to participate in for the benefit of renewable soil, and trash disposal.

I don't know if you simply gave up on reading the thread, or if you're just choosing to ignore some parts of it.

You can tell me how dumb this is, but I don't care. I think it's a pretty cool idea, and it's something I could use. Maybe someone else needs it too.

Sheep only have wool when they eat grass. Notch hasn't put that ability back into the indev sheep yet, hence no wool. :wink.gif:

Umm, not too sure about this. Sheep initially spawned with wool in the old version. My guess is that the wool you get from hitting the sheep simply hasn't been put back yet. It's true that they used to eat grass as well, but I don't think that has anything to do with their wool.

I think that it's not back yet because you can craft the block that sheep used to drop with nine strings. My guess is that Notch may want to make them drop these strings instead of a whole block.

Is Notch even adding a day/night cycle? I thought I saw someone say that he didn't want to do it because it'd take a LOT of chunk updates to change the lighting for every block.
