Yeah, seems the best way to do this is find a seed from beta 1.6 that had some decent extreme mountains with a few hanging areas, then just expand/terraform. Otherwise, just build it up yourself.

Does not take away the fact that there is still server code, and you cannot pause it, it is still essentially a stupid server instead of solid single player only mode.

Do you not understand the whole reason for development versions of software/games?

Would you complain this way if you were playing a beta version of the game? Because the development snapshot is just that, in-development.

Minecraft will still have single player. Stop complaining that the development version is broken and/or stupid, because that's what it's for. Being broken and trying to figure out if it's stupid. I downloaded, ran, and used the snapshot with 0 issues besides reported bugs that I was already aware about. Internet went out while I was playing, and I went on without a hitch.

For everyone complaining that someone could just drop in and ruin your server, no. Your 'server' runs as a local entity. Unless you set specifically that the port that you specify is open, and routed to minecraft, etc. Nobody can 'drop in' on your game.

So why not chill and wait for the actual final release?

Also: If jeb and mojang don't integrate the client and server software, then choosing a 'host server' button will never be able to happen.
And the pause feature will more than likely return when things are sorted out correctly. It'll take some time though, so chill.
