jess: would it be possible to disable the server map rendering past certain points?

i just keep finding naughty people who have started building something miles away from the lovely flat sandstone.

it is possible, but with the old server I am not worried about it. when I put up the new map, I will likely add a plugin that limits the exploration of the map

just want everyone to know, that I have turned off the dynamic map for the server until I get the new server hardware for it. a few people asked about it on YouTube, so I thought it was worth mentioning here

Also, one more thing I wanted to bring up, I know I talked a bit before about taking donations for a new server. as of right now, I have greatly exceeded my hardware capacity. When I made my first post, I talked about it and at that time the most people I saw on at one time was 13 or 14, but now, we hit 20 people several times in one day, which is beyond what I can support. because of this, we need immediate action that will decide if we either move to another host, or open donations for me to buy a new server. as for donations or porting the server to a new location or whatever, this will be discussed at tomorrows admin meeting. If it turns out people will be donating towards a new server I have decided to allow donations more than $25, since it was a popular idea. that being said I will make the amount donated, as well as the person who donated the money publicly available. I will also make any invoices publicly available as well (minus any personal information, of course) so you can ensure that your donatons are well spent.

now I don't know if the RDF admins have something else in mind (taking the server and moving it somewhere else) but if they do, than none of this means anything. anyway after the admin meeting tomorrow, i'm sure most of this will have been decided.

    server update!!!
after hours and hours of work, I have finished the basis of the new server.

With this I have changed a few things.

First off, I changed our user/group management system to a new plugin called "permissions" to allow for further expansion and upgrades to the server.

Second, here is a display of the new groups, and a description of their purpose

    Default
Temporary (replaces "apprentice" has a more fitting name)
    Builder
Engineer (replaces "foreman" in the old syntax, all old "foreman" members will be ported here)
Foreman (added to counteract the large amount of users we had as compared to admins, created to serve as "moderators")
    RDFAdmin
ServerAdmin (created specifically for me, because there were some people that didn't know that I was the server admin)

Third, I created the new server map, the dimensions are 5000x5000, (compared to the old map which was roughly 2500x2500
the new map is MUCH larger than the last one, so I have serious doubt that we will be running out of room any time soon.

Shrogg is working on setting up a new spawn, as well as setting up the new "sections" that will be used to organize peoples work. (also thanks to goldy5114 for his help with setting up the main spawn area)

Fourth, I said I was going to add a plugin that would allow people to "claim" property, after review, I have decided that this is far more complicated than I had expected. It has both performance and usability drawbacks, so I have decided against it. To counter this, I would ask the RDF admins to enforce a rule, that everyone needs to build in a single plot of land, and not leave clutter around the world. People should add a fence around their property, and a sign saying who that area belongs to, or there is a good chance that their work will be erased by an admin or foreman.

Now the only things left to do on the server, are to section off the different areas of land, and add the user permissions nodes. once that is finished, the server will be ready to be pushed out to the public.

If you have any questions about the new server setup, or anything else discussed here, or if you have any recommendations/suggestions, please let me know.

I would like to let everyone know that I have set up a forum site, but I have not set up any containers for it yet, nor have I configured a domain name.

I plan to migrate the forum over to a registered domain name (probably jessassin.net, or something similar as I will be paying for it) and then I will allow posts to the forum.

in the mean time, please visit http://99.11.156.33/forum and register an account, so we can have a head start on getting everyone situated.
*edit* I will be promoting "RDF Admins" to forum admins, once I can verify they are who they say they are. meaning, don't register that you are Berick, if you are not him, I wont be promoting the account, and I will likely block your IP (and yes, I caught you. don't do it again)

I would also let everyone know, that for the remainder of the day, I will be working on creating a new server configuration, to accommodate for a larger map, and better organization of projects.

If you have any questions, the best way to contact me would be via Skype, as I will not be checking any other mediums until I have the server finished.

Hypuhrr: Thank you! Though both Shrogg and Davisd09 beat me to being the first from the RDF to have a project featured as a DD :tongue.gif: Looking forward to seeing a UTD project get the honor!

    Stoffe: Looks useful! Good job.

Jessassin: We all agree on all of your points. We are working to get a donation system in place (via paypal) so that we can all contribute to upgrading the server and help pay for maintenance costs.

It is our goal to acquire the hardware necessary to accommodate the new map layout, and as many players at a time as feasible. That goes for not only Jessassin's primary server, but also for the upcoming school.

Zdrada: Nice display! Does it work? I know that pistons act weird when blocks are powered around them...

And don't worry everyone, we won't be splitting up the server. :smile.gif:

It is good to know that I have the support of the community :smile.gif:

I am also glad that we won't be creating a "secondary" server, as this would make the community segregated :smile.gif:

Yes, making multiple paypal accounts each donating $ 25 would work. :biggrin.gif:

Oh also Jess, if you're making a plugin to assign plots, can you also make one that would reset the film room?

if you really want to donate more than $25, then I'll allow it... it just feels weird accepting a large amount of money from a single person :/

also, I will definitely allow clearing of specific areas :smile.gif:

Ok guys, I am making this post because there are some pressing issues that need to be addressed as far as the RDF server goes.

First: I have recently exceeded the hardware capabilities of the server, meaning I need to either upgrade to a better server, or someone else is going to need to host the server for the RDF. I have done as much as is possible to optimize the server. I have done everything I can think of, from disabling windows themes, disabling unnecessary processes, to more advanced things, like removing desktop backgrounds, prioritizing java over other applications, and allowing java exclusive access to most of the system memory.

Second: I need to fix the map to make it a bit more optimized for the amount of people we currently have. When I started hosting the server with the 30 or so people the RDF had at the time, there was more than enough "map space" to go around, but with the 100+ people we have now, there is no longer enough space on the map. Here is my idea for the new map. First, I will section off the map into either 150x150 or 200x200 chunks. Next I will add a plugin where anyone can "claim" one of the sections, but make it to where you can only have one "claimed" piece of land at a time (unless an admin makes an exception) that way, we could prevent the littering of the map that has been taking place.

Third: I know that it is a bit difficult to communicate with others of the RDF at the moment, and to solve this, I would like to set up a community forum, to allow for better interaction of members, better tracking of products, and overall a better community experience. I have already set up a forum site, and am currently testing it, and once I feel it is ready, I will submit it to the other RDF admins for review.

Finally: I would like to upgrade the server to compensate with the growing popularity of the server, but I currently do not have enough money to upgrade the server. Because of this, I would like to ask for donations (with the approval of Berick, and the other admins) in order to upgrade the server. I already asked Berick about doing donations, and he said that he would pay a certain amount of money to help me upgrade the server, but I didn't feel comfortable with it, because it was (to me) a large amount of money to get from one single person. because of this, I will only take a maximum donation of $25.

For people who are not aware, the server is back to a working state. The IP address is 99.11.156.33:25567

also remember that I host a ventrilo server. the IP for it is the same. :smile.gif:

so yea. the server will be up in a few minutes... I do need to get the "newer" version of the map before you will be able to join though

Thanks for your work keeping the server up.

We can build ALUs, RAM, CPUs, hard drives, displays, all in Minecraft... but has anyone thought to design a fan? What happens when heat starts building up in our creations?

    I do my best :smile.gif:

also, you do have a point, but since the CPUs and such that we create operate at 0.01hz, I highly doubt cooling is necessary :tongue.gif:
