AnonTheMouse posted a message on Moss Stone ImprovementsI've noticed that a number of people - maybe not a majority, but a number - feel that Mossy Cobblestone isn't special enough. There are also a number of people that want to see a greater presence of magical elements to Minecraft. Often, these two camps intersect, and lead to people asking for Mossy Cobblestone to get magical powers. On the surface, I admit, this seems like a silly idea. It's just Cobblestone with moss growing on it. On the other hand, there is some merit to their point. After all, in the current setup you can only get Mossy Cobblestone from dungeons. That means that not only is the supply quite limited, but there is also an inherent risk in collecting it. However, at it's most basic it's still just coloured Cobblestones, meant to provide decoration.Posted in: Suggestions
The problem is, Mossy Cobblestone fails in even that regard. They cannot make any other blocks. You can use them anywhere you could use a cobblestone block, and that's it. So, the first goal here is to make them more decorative. These will collectively be referred to as Decor Blocks. What are they?
- Mossy Stairs
- Mossy Slab
- Mossy Pressure Plate
Next is Waygates. This is where adding the "mystical" element comes in. First of all, this would only be if Mossy Cobblestone retains its current rarity. What are they? Essentially...portals. To be more specific they would be world portals, linking two locations on the same map. Construction would be a ring, the same as making a Nether portal, and like a Nether portal you would "activate" one with flint and steel. However, from there they would function rather differently. First, the legacy version. This version is obsolete and I no longer support it:
Quote from AnonTheMouseOnce lit, a Waygate's bottom two stones burn on top with blue flames. Putting out either flame extinguishes the gate. If, on the other hand, the same player then lights a second Waygate on the same map, then those two Waygates become linked. Tossing a block into the flames would activate the linked portals, filling them with a light blue portal for a time. Based on a number of factors, the "quality" of the block would effect how long the portal stays open. For example, things like flowers, mushrooms, and coal would open the portal for only a moment (long enough to pass though); stone, many crafted items, and the like would be enough for short two-way trips; things like Diamond, Obsidian, and Mossy Cobblestone could leave the gate open for several minutes. Of course, the blocks would be tiered, so at a certain point more valuable does not mean more time (i.e. don't throw a whole diamond block in). If either gate is extinguished, both go out (and can then be re-attuned to a different gate). These could either be Player-Only, like Nether portals, or worked like the popular Portal Mod, and allow blocks and mobs to pass through.
Current Version:
Much of the behaviour for Waygates would be the same in the previous version. Unlike before, they are not lit with a Flint and Steel, however. Instead, a special catalyst material must be used, and is consumed in the process. Once lit, a Waygate's bottom two stones still burn on top with blue flames. Putting out either flame extinguishes the gate, just as before and the same player then lights a second Waygate on the same map, in the same dimension, to link those two Waygates.
From there, some things change. When the second portal is lit, the two linked gates fill with a light blue portal. However, that portal is frozen. In other words, a solid block, like portal ice. Essentially, this portal is closed. If any of the frozen portal blocks are broken (they break just like ice), or if the ring is broken, then the link is broken as well and both gates go out...or in the event that one was hit with an explosion or the like, the surviving gate goes out. Once the link is broken, the empty portal can be set to any other unlit ring.
Of course, you are surely wondering how to actually use these portals. The answer is, once again, with a catalyst material. By holding such an item and right clicking a frozen portal, it becomes a "thaws" the portals for those gates so that you can step into them, leading out through the linked Waygate. This lasts for twenty seconds or one trip, whichever comes first. What are catalyst materials, though? Well, there are several:
- Ender Pearl
- Ghast Tear
- Blaze Rod
- Redstone Dust (Requires 3)
- Glowstone Dust (Requires 3)
Brotip: Make a Waygate leading into a lava pool and place a sign on the linked portal marked "Treasure Room"...hilarity will ensue.
Last, and least, I have my token offering to those clamouring for everything to have a tool set. We'll call these "Bio" Tools, as there defining principle is being organic. More precisely, the idea is that tools made of moss stone are pretty much only being held together by the moss. You use them and the moss gets weakened, then grows back, filling in all the cracks again.
Like with Gold, they get a new use but are mostly just for show. You know the saying, "a rolling stone gathers no moss", right? Well, the point there is that moss is a sign of slowness, of not moving. That's how Bio Tools work. They have the durability of Wood...after all, it's old and crumbling stone with moss infiltrating the cracks! However, they still have the "hardness" of stone, and can be used in any way stone tools can. So what's the trade off? What benefit make it even remotely worth using them? Well, imagine that as your tool breaks down, it cracks. Imagine moss slowly, oh so slowly, creeping in to fill in those cracks. That's what Bio Tools do...they regenerate. Just, they do it very slowly. What if they break? That's it, they're gone. So what are they good for? Well, they're streaked with green. Other than that, they'd mainly be useful only as a fallback, something to use to get materials for better tools as a last resort when you don't want/can't afford to waste wood. That's pretty much it.
So there you have it. Three ways to make Mossy Cobblestone more interesting and useful. Feel free to leave any constructive comments you may have below. However, please try to put some thought into your posts. If you just don't like the idea, the best way to express that is by voting no in the polls above, and not bumping the topic. If it's lost in the mess of the boards, then we can all agree people weren't interested. There's no need to be rude or hostile if you disagree. I am not trying to push my ideas on anyone, merely to present them and see how others feel. So, once again, if you don't like my ideas there is a poll for you to vote in. You may express your disinterest by not bumping. -

I'm not sure if I like how it looks, but I wanted criticism from the public. A 32x cobblestone texture. (sorry if it's hard to see, I don't know how to make it bigger)

Needs more shading, but yes, you'd do very good. Try doing stone/grass/dirt next. -

Sacheverell posted a message on PAX - 1.8 Game Features!
We go into some detail for the new 1.8 features, covering each item as it was presented. Take a look!
[readmore]
Some things that were touched on at PAX, regarding 1.8:
Cobwebs, Mineshafts & More
Notch said that randomly generated, abandoned mine shafts would occur in world generation, many of them with the new cobweb blocks scattered throughout. It was said that exploration would yield rewards in locations like the mine shafts, as well as a new type of dungeon, so keep an eye out for that! Furthermore, some of the NPC villages were shown at the demonstration, and while they were currently vacant, the architecture was remarkable for a world-generated town. Very exciting!
Endermen
We were shown a detailed look at the elusive Endermen, where it could be seen how they reacted to the player's presence. If a player looks in their general direction (or otherwise refrains from direct interaction), they remain peaceful. However, looking directly at them (with the cross-hairs on them) causes them to become agitated, teleporting to and attacking the player! It was also said that they could randomly pick up and deposit blocks on a whim, and that they would spawn quite rarely upon release of 1.8.
New Lighting
In addition to the day/night cycle being adjustable, light is generated very differently now. The day/night transition will be very smooth, doing away with the "block by block, row by row" light level changes we have now. Also, objects like torches, light stone etc. will generate their own type (and color) of light, making it much easier to distinguish between them, as well as giving players the ability to light an area how they like! Finally, a new Brightness slider was added, allowing players to set the overall lighting of their game to their personal tastes!
Experience, Hunger
The new Hunger bar will take the place of how food heals players currently. The more filled it is, the faster the player will regenerate health. If it dips too low, health will actually start being lost! Notch showed a new "eating" animation to go with the new system, as well as demonstrating the various types of meat being added (such as beef, and apparently zombie meat).
Experience will be gained by defeating monsters and collecting the "Experience Orbs" they drop, which will later be used to purchase goodies for the player. It was not specified what could be bought at this time, but they assured us that it would be worthwhile.
Rivers, Oceans
Rivers and oceans will now be generated in the world, along with existing biomes. The rivers are quite large, and can either span a length of land with a connection to an ocean, or form a "circular" river, that feeds into itself. It was also said that rivers will not flow at this time, but it was being considered.
Expanded Combat
Bows can now be "charged" longer, for higher damage output. Additionally, it will be possible to get critical hits, either from attacking while coming down from a jump, or semi-randomly from a charged bow shot! New impact animations were shown for monsters as well, including having arrows lodged in the monster being shot. Also, it will be possible to sprint for extended periods, and monsters hit while sprinting will go flying. Quite useful for spiders and creepers!
New (and Expanded) Biomes
Biomes will be much larger than before, with more clearly marked borders between them. We saw the transition from a "plains" type biome into a desert, and the difference was much more noticeable. The desert that was shown was massive, enveloping an area that, currently, would hold anywhere from 2-3 biomes at once! There was some talk of a Mountain biome as well, but we weren't able to see one at this time. Keep an eye out for this!
1.8 will add Creative Mode
Since the Adventure mode will be replacing Survival, Mojang has also re-implemented Creative mode! In this mode, players will take no damage, be able to fly, control day/night directly, can spawn infinite items of any type, and can break blocks with one hit!
1.8 is expected to be released sometime in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for its release, as well as more update information right here!
