nope. intel makes awful video cards for gaming and 3d acceleration. as long as it has a pcie x16 v1 v2 or v2.1 slot, you can upgrade the video and disable the built in very easily. (also with what youre saying, the built in discrete or secondary video would do well) For the purposes of minecraft, the minimum for good gameplay would be something around the $60+ range.

I have several cards here for my various computers... an nvidia 7900gs is a bit choppy but runs without awful lag, an nvidia 9800gt runs great, nvidia 6600gt is too slow, nvidia gts250 runs great, HD3450 (in my home theatre pc) plays mc like the 7900gs, HD4850 runs great (about equal to gts250), and my new hd6850 which is expensive but is totally awesome now that ive worked out the graphics hitching problem... basically drivers newer then 10.10 have a newer catalyst control center in them which has something called tesselation optimization which seems to cause bad hitching in mc to even be installed even if not running.

sounds like corruption, have you tried testing your computer with memtest and also prime95 for a few hours (at least) each?

I dunno I have run many different servers in my day but never once saw this problem... all I can guess is that either the server is having a bit of a speed issue (too slow) or that maybe the particular version of java runtime is causing issues. Have you tried completely uninstalling JRE and installing a different version? the newest, one version older then that, and if your os is 64 bit the 64 bit version too?

have you tried logging out and exiting the game, then restarting it?

have you tried either restarting the server if its yours, or asking that it be restarted?

the files need to be in a very specific place on your computer for it to see them.

google for it and "how to copy minecraft to another computer", but IIRC its something like %appdata%\.minecraft\ where you must put the files such as the world and settings files.

    desktop or laptop?
    wireless or wired?

have you tried a different connection method? (using an ethernet cable if you normally use wireless, or using an addon ethernet card inside your computer if you already use ethernet, or going to a friends house and using their internet if you use wireless?)

Without any additional information, anything would be a shot in the dark guess.

The only thing I can even think of to tell you besides trying alternate connection methods as above, is to replace your network card with an add in network card. Refer to your user manual about what kind of add in cards your computer takes. If it is a laptop, it would probably be best to get a USB 10/100 ethernet adapter because they can be had for like $15 and work great for testing. If it is a desktop, just get an intel brand wired ethernet card. If you must use wifi, just get a new usb wifi card, to be safe get one of the b/g/n ones.

further testing has revealed the true culprit to be catalyst control center. running even the 11.6 bare driver without CCC does not give the lag hitch problem at all.

catalyst control center in the AMD/ATi video drivers newer than 10.10 for windows 7 x64 cause this issue at least with the 6800 series AMD video cards. avoid.

After a lot more troubleshooting I have found what seems to be the answer.

Java runtime, when updating itself, leaves many traces of the old version "laying around" on the operating system, when I looked in add/remove programs (or whatever windows 7 now calls it) it had umpteen versions of java there. Just as a troubleshooting measure, I removed every single one of them in turn, and then installed a clean, new version of java (the same version I was effectively at with the umpteen upgrades it did to itself over time).

In short: java runtime screws up if you don't clean off it's old versions and start fresh.

I have absolutely no idea why this would only affect my new video card, but it certainly fixed the problems.

And apparently driver versions 11.5 and 11.6 from AMD also cause this - running older ones also fixes it.

EDIT: I like your computer... It looks sexy

LOL I just caught that. thanks :smile.gif:

It's not that expensive of a case, really. look up XIMATECH on newegg, it goes for $30-40 plus shipping usually. I got it mainly for the mesh front grilles with filters, coverable holes in the side, and black everything even the mobo tray, spacers, and backbrackets.

You could temprarily boot another OS and run minecraft from it (obviously installing java first) to figure out if it is a software or hardware issue. I recommend making a Puppy Linux boot USB or maybe something else like freeBSD (I know nothing about freeBSD)

I was just discussing that option with a friend, I am going to snag my usb2 60gb external notebook drive-in-an-enclosure and throw xp64 onto it, or maybe mint x64.

I just about guarantee it will do the same thing, though. Drop in my old GTS250 or even my really old 7900GS/OCE 256MB and it works fine. The HD4850 died when a "friend" rolled my computer a-somersalting-down-stairs or I would have tested with it too.

As for FreeBSD.... got a week to compile the kernel and userland and all apps from source? That's about what it takes to get a base desktop x setup going reliably. I used to run it as a desktop OS during the 5.x to 7.x days.

Thanks for the help, though. Your effort is appreciated.

Known as the Lag spike of death, There is a fix for this as a mod, if you want to install it. The link is Here.

No difference at all, and I used the "lagspikeofdeath" patch suggested.

thanks for trying, yet one more homeopathic 'remedy' down.

My lag spikes seem to be far more severe and random then the ones shown for others, now that I have tracked down videos. each one of the spikes in the following screenshot was no less than 300ms, which is near an eternity in first person 3D games, as you can see I actually fell off of what I was walking around on that spike was so bad. >.<

solution found! see bottom post (post #9).

Yes, I used search, yes, I googled. yes, I tried new video drivers. yes, I tried the old card again. Yes, I know what I am doing with computers far more then most anyone else who says such.

I have yet to find any decent answer on this: how (without modding) can I fix the video hitching / video lag spiking problem with an HD 6850 video card? I see it seems to be a problem here and there, but no firm answer was shown on anything, though I did try several of the crazy homeopathic remedies that were suggested.

The only details I can show are that the top right corner of the minecraft window seems to get updated while the rest completely stops, and it does not even accept keyboard input while doing such, because if I am typing in the console during this lag fit, it does not show/update the new text after such fit.

    Gigabyte HD6850 1GB PCIE video
    Gigabyte P43/ICH10 based LGA775 motherboard
    SATA 160GB seagate HDD
    4x 2GB Kingston DDR2-800
E3300 Wolfdale core2duo at 3.33GHz / 10x333 (yes, its prime stable, yes, everything else works fine with it and has for two years, and yes I am anal retentive about making sure no errors show. I am also using a different CPU right now to test it for a friend, which is an intel e1200 conroe core core2 duo, which also is prime stable and shows no problems with anything else)
    windows 7 x64 ultimate
PC Power & cooling silencer 430 PSU (also at times I use a silverstone ST400 PSU, as shown below)
    intel pro/1000GT PCI network

previous video cards: BFG GeForce GTS250 1GB PCIE, and also a HIS HD4850 1GB PCIE
Yes, I have tested with furmark and many other games, and yes I removed the old vid drivers before installing anew. also, yes I am running the newest AMD drivers for my video card, gotten 5 days ago, and reinstalled two days ago, though this is the only game with this problem.

The hitching / video lag only occurs in minecraft, and does so with the old and new launcher both, and does not do so with my old video cards in the same system.

    for what uses?

Basically the rage 128 is a 2D only card more or less, and the unichrome pro has a few video codec assists built in but is basically for the same thing... neither will let you play games very well if at all, and both are rather old to put it lightly.

are you seriously telling this poor person to wipe their hard drive when they have no OS CD to reinstall from?!

OP: ignore these people if you don't have an install or restore disc for your computer, because what they are telling you will nuke the entire hard drive's data including any recovery partition on it!

wow. yes, I definitely missed that MSi HD5670, that's quite a good card for low profile. I may get one myself, actually. (how in the heck did I miss that at newegg?)
