posted a message on Myth Island, A Medieval Survival Server, Now using 1.3.1!
    Myth Island
    A Medieval Survival Server.

Myth Island is a HUGE Survival server with a theme. How huge? With over 100 km2 of usable land and over 10,000 blocks from border to border, this map is bigger then any you have played on before! What theme? The main map (the HUGE one) is focused on medieval times. This includes any architecture from any part of the world as long it was used during this time period. But don't worry... We are flexible as to what fits this definition, so as long as "it looks like it could have been built during the Medieval time period", then its probably OK!

Why this theme? That has to do with the main map itself. Its a custom Made map based off of realistic landscapes, not Minecrafts random land generator. This makes it quite beautiful, and we want to keep it that way. How many time have you ventured onto a new server only to find the land covered in pixel art and ugly multi-colored buildings? Probably too many times.

Still want to build something that doesn't fit the theme? that's OK too! We also have a Creative Map were you may build anything you like! (Within certain obvious rules!)

Interested? Then here are the details:

The server is free to join, and everyone is welcome! However, In light of recent events, We will now require registration via email. This change is due to the fact that when players were allowed to build as soon as they logged in, about 75% of them immediately begin to grief. So... from now on... All new players will be required to register via email. This is not my preferred method, and I would rather leave the server free to anyone that logs in, but time and time again it has been proven that you cannot trust just anyone. Especially on the internet.

All players will be allowed to visit the server, but only registered players will have building rights.

Note: Your Email address, along with any information contained there in, will not be shared with anyone ever. The only people that have access to the email registration list is my self and one other highly trusted admin that will handle registrations when i am not available.

Note 2: You will be required to provide your age. No exceptions.

Still interested? OK then here is what you will need to do in order to register...

step 1: Log into the server.

step 2: Read the instructions that immediately appears in the server chat. if you missed it, just run /motd.

step 3: Follow the instructions to the letter, and send me an email exactly the way it tells you too. My email address is provided as part of the instructions.

How will you know when your registration is complete? Within a day or so max, usually instantly if you send in your registration while I am at my computer or when I have access to my phone, you will receive an email reply telling you that you are now registered. You will then be able to build on the server.

Please be patient, Do Not send multiple emails asking why you are not registered yet. I have a life and a full time job, plus i spend one weekend a month with the national guard, so I don't have all the time in the world.

That being said, i do keep my phone on me and i can, and do, register people from it when i have a moment to spare.

This server also features dungeons! What kind of Dungeons? the kind were you can find loot, and rewards for completing them! One dungeon might boost your attack power, while another might make you jump higher! (at the time of this writing, the dungeons are still being developed, but will be done soon!)

    RULES:

YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE RULES TO PLAY ON THIS SERVER. BY CONNECTING TO MYTH ISLAND YOU ARE ACKNOWLEDGING AND AGREEING TO ABIDE BY THESE RULES.

THREE STRIKES ON ANY OF THE FOLLOWING RULES MAY RESULT IN A BAN, DEPENDING ON THE JUDGEMENT OF THE ADMIN OR MODERATOR THAT CATCHES YOU. YOU MAY APPEAL A BAN BY CONTACTING THE OWNER VIA EMAIL.
    1. ALL PLAYERS MUST FOLLOW THE MEDIEVAL THEME OF MYTH ISLAND WHILE BUILDING ON THE MAIN MAP. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BUILD WITHIN THE THEME PLEASE GO TO THE CREATIVE MAP TO BUILD. WORRIED THAT YOUR BUILDING DOESN'T FIT THE THEME? THEN ASK ANY MOD/ADMIN OR THE OWNER! THIS RULE IS EXEMPT FROM THE THREE STRIKE POLICY, THOUGH YOU MAY LOSE YOUR BUILDING PRIVILEGES FOR REPEAT OFFENCES.
    2. NO RACISM, NO ANTISEMITISM, AND NO OVERTLY SEXIST COMMENTS (INCLUDING GAY BASHING).
    3. SWEARING AND ALL VULGAR LANGUAGE IS ALLOWED, SO LONG AS IT DOES NOT VIOLATE RULE #2.
    4. BUILDINGS SHOULD BE BUILT AT LEAST TWO BLOCKS AWAY FROM ANY STRUCTURE THAT YOU DO NOT OWN. THIS IS MEASURED HORIZONTALLY, MEANING YOU CANNOT BUILD UNDER OR OVER ANOTHER BUILDING, FROM 0 ALL THE WAY TO 256. THE ONLY TIME YOU MAY DISREGARD THIS RULE IS IF YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM THE OWNER OF THE BUILDER YOU WISH TO BUILD NEAR. WARNING: ROADS COUNT AS OWNED STRUCTURES ACCORDING THIS RULE!
    5. GREIFING IS AN INSTANT BAN. IF YOU COME ACROSS WHAT YOU SUSPECT IS GREIFING, DO NOT TOUCH IT. REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY! EITHER VIA EMAIL, OR TO A MOD/ADMIN. ANY DAMAGES CAN BE UNDONE IF YOU REPORT IT TO AN ADMIN/MOD! HOWEVER... IF YOU TOUCH THE SUPPOSED GREIFING AND WE CHECK THE LOGS AND FIND YOUR NAME IN WITH THE ACTUAL GREIFERS BECUASE YOU BROKE OR PLACED A BLOCK, YOU MAY GET BANNED TOO!!!
    6. ALL REDSTONE CIRCUITS MUST HAVE AN ON/OFF SWITCH AND BE LEFT IN AN INACTIVE STATE WHEN NOT IN USE. THIS MEANS THAT NO CIRCUIT CAN HAVE CONSTANTLY RUNNING CLOCKS/MONO STABLE CIRCUITS, REPEATER LOOPS, OR PULSARS. ANY REDSTONE CIRCUIT FOUND IN VIOLATION OF THIS RULE WILL BE DISABLED AND/OR REMOVED.
    7. IF A MOD OR ADMIN TELLS YOU SOMETHING, THEM YOU MUST ABIDE BY IT. CHANCES ARE ITS FOR A GOOD REASON. IF IT SEEMS QUESTIONABLE, THEM FEEL FREE TO ASK ANOTHER MOD, ADMIN, OR THE OWNER, JACK324. REMEMBER THE RANK STRUCTURE IS AS FOLLOWS (THE HIGHER UP THE LIST, THE HIGHER THE RANK):
    • OWNER (JACK324)
    • ADMIN (ANYONE WITH THE "OP-S" LABEL)
    • MODERATOR (MODS)
    • YOU!

    How to Protect your creations:

While this server does log EVERY block place or break, so that we can undo any griefing, we understand that most players would like to prevent it from occurring all together. However this will require a few proactive measures on the part of our users.

Before we begin, The Staff and I would like to make this blatantly clear: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ITEMS STOLEN FROM CHESTS, AND WILL NOT REPLACE ITS CONTENTS IF THE ITEMS WERE STOLEN BECAUSE YOU DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO PROTECT THEM OR YOU PUT YOUR TRUST IN SOMEBODY AND THEY BETRAYED YOU. THAT IS 100% ON YOU. Thank you for keeping this in mind.

So, how do you protect your creations? There are two forms of protection you can employ:
    1. Using essentials to lock your chests.
    2. Using RedProtect to take ownership of your land from 0-256.
To lock a chest using essentials, place a sign above, to the side, or below the chest. On the first line put: "[protection]" . Leave the next line blank, as it will auto fill in your name. the bottom two lines can be used to add two more users you wish to have access to the chest, with one name per line. Hit done when completed, and the first line will turn blue if you placed the sing close enough. If not, check your spelling, or were you placed the sign.

If you are locking a chest for another player, you would fill in their name on the second line were you would normally leave it blank. this will lock the chest giving ownership to that person only.

To protect your land (and anything within it, including chests) using RedProtect, start by building a complete fence all the way around the area you intend to protect. The fence must be unbroken, be made of only wooden fence, each fence piece must only be touching two other fence pieces, and the entire fence must be at the same block height. Essentially you are drawing an unbroken line around the area in question.

Once that is done, place a sign on the side of the fence (inside or out), and put "[rp]" on the first line. On the second line put a name for the protected area, it can be anything that will fit, but it cannot contain any spaces(use underscores instead). On the bottom two lines, you may also put two more user names of people you would like to have access to the area.

Hit done, and the "[rp]" should turn green if all went well. if it turned green, then your area is now protected from griefing from 0-256, and your chests and doors are inaccessible to others. If the "[rp]" turned red, then you need to check that you followed all the instructions above about building the fence. once you find the problem, you may try placing the sign again.

once you are satisfied, you may remove the sings and the fence as you please, as they are only important during setup, and removing them after words does not effect the protection

Remember: PEOPLE CAN STILL ENTER YOUR AREA. THIS PROTECTION DOES NOT PREVENT PEOPLE FROM ENTERING. ONLY ANIMAL KILLING, PLACING/BREAKING BLOCKS, OPENING CHESTS, DOOR OPENING, AND ALL REDSTONE BUTTONS/SWITCHES AND PRESSURE PLATES ARE COVERED.

To remove RedProtect's protection, stand in the area YOU OWN, and run command "/rp delete" . This will permanently delete the protection, allowing you to replace it if you made a mistake or need to replace the area with a larger one, since the zones cannot overlap.

There are other parameters that can be specified, like weather monsters can spawn in the zone, or to turn off door/redstone use protection. for more information regarding the extra parameters please run "/rp ?"

Thank You for taking the time to protect your creations, as it helps us out, and allows us more time to add features to the server, which benefits you!

posted a message on 3d mipmaping of terrain... possible?
    Quote from Salmonman

What he is saying is that the ENTIRE landscape can be considered a huge detailed 3d object. At a certain distance 8 blocks in a cube could be rendered as one large block, and at a further distance blocks of 64 (4x4x4). I guess. I'm actually not too knowledgeable on the subject, but I assume it could be used to vastly increase render distance, which would be really cool.

this is exactly what i was thinking about. better performance for weaker pc's, and way better view distance for better pc's.

    Quote from Nocte

Yes, this is a great idea, and some people have already looked into this. Although I don't think anyone ever got to the point of releasing a working mod for it, it's kinda tricky to get right. It's a common technique in "real" voxel engines (as in the raycasting kind), google 'sparse voxel octree' if you want to know more.

The GPU doesn't care if it's drawing a nice 3D model or a simple cube, in the end it's all triangles. Polygon count is always important; less polygons means smoother gameplay, or a chance to draw more stuff. It is especially important in Minecraft, where the polygon count is sky high, and most of the traditional 3D engine techniques are of no use.

There could be another advantage, besides increasing the view distance for everybody. In a multiplayer setup, you could save a lot of bandwidth by sending the low-res versions for terrain that's further away, and stream the additional detail as the player gets nearer.

Minetest used to have a different approach, where the distant terrain was simplified by triangulating the heightmap instead of working at the voxel level. This is much faster, but a lot of detail gets lost as well. (I think they dropped it for 0.4.)

i had not thought about bandwidth, but now that you mention it, it would be extremely useful for servers. seeing as mojang has already made attempts to decrease file size and improve bandwidth usage in the new anvil format, i imagine this would be something of interest fro them.

posted a message on 3d mipmaping of terrain... possible?
so i was playing around with optifine the other day and changing my mipmap levels when i thought of a great idea.

why not mipmap the terrain, not the textures, but the blocks them selves. here's the idea:

mipmaping is essentially reducing the the resolution of a texture as it gets farther away from you in a 3d space. this takes advantage of the fact that the farther you are from the texture the less detail your monitor can show from it, because of the detail limit imposed by your monitors resolution. this allows the 3d image being rendered to take up less memory as the textures take up less space the further they are from you.

why cant we do something similar to the terrain? why cant we have blocks that are to far away to the payer to be seen clearly, simply get there polygon count simplified, thus reducing there memory footprint and less cpu usage. this happens in other video games already. you can see it as you walk forward in a game and more detailed objects "appear" as you get close enough that you can make them out despite your monitors resolution.

one could do the same with minecraft blocks. if say 4 blocks were to get far enough from the player that they no longer fill 4 pixels or more, why not have them show as a simplified version that takes up less polygons, and thus less memory and cpu. you could make it continue like that based on multiples of blocks that form a cube, as far as you want, even as far as 128x128 (or more) could be shown in a simplified form if all the blocks cant be resolved.

an advantage to this would be, for players that don't currently have problems with performance, potentially extended viewing distances beyond the standard "far view" with out destroying performance. a way to implement it would be to have additional files in the save folder that contain the simplified terrain.

this is purely a hypothetical idea, but one that i feel has some merit.

i want to hear your thoughts on it, ideas on ways to implement it, and weather the concept is even feasible in minecraft.

posted a message on Looking for builders for a medieval style server project.
Hello fellow minecrafters! I come looking for builders on a very large project.

This is a realtime image of the server. it shows exactly what is going on on the server from jack324's
point of view. every time you hit refresh it updates the image to the most current view!

This is a huge RPG project that encompasses a massive map and will focus on factions style battles. We have a plot worked out, and a gameplay system built up. All we need is YOU to help us build the landscape! Any one that participates in this pre-launch build will get special perks not available to normal players!

But before we get into that, lets talk about the Server itself:

The project is called Myth Island, and its focus is on a large map featuring RPG game play elements, a leveling system, and factions style fighting. There is also a three sided, open ended, Story line And each player can follow this plot alone or in groups as they level up.

The game play will follow one of the three different paths available in the plot, based on a decision they must make when they first log into the server. From there he/she will will follow the plot up to level 6, after which the plot becomes open ended and everything that follows will be up to the player and their interactions with the other players on the server.

The three plots are each based around a different groups of people vying for control of the land and resources on the island. Each group has their own pros and cons but are relatively balanced. these groups are:
    • The Natives. Culturally rich, closely connected to nature, and governed by an ancient tribal religion. The natives have strong warriors, but lack the industrial skills needed for advanced weapons and armor. They do however have the ability to instill mystical powers in their weapons and armor. They seek to reclaim their lost lands from the colonials and to prevent them from claiming more land in there never ending quest to mine the island.
    • The Colonials. These are seafaring peoples arriving from far east of the island. They are socially sophisticated, industrially advanced, and are led by the local military leaders sent over from their homeland to oversee the security of the mining operations on the island. The Colonials have the ability to forge strong weapons and strong armor, but their soldiers lack much of the inate skills that the native warriors poses. They seek to mine the resource rich island to support their homeland and the ongoing war being fought far in the east.
    • The third group... Is a secret. Only the most curious players with a keen eye and a truly adventurous nature will find & take advantage of this unique group.
The majority of the game play, after leveling up, will be focused on the war between the natives and the colonials, and the land that each attempts to take from each other. the borders between each side will change as each side wins land or losses land. while the focus will be on fighting, we leave it up to the players how they want to conduct the battles. Any player may take part in the battles regardless of their level.

Also after a player reaches level 6 (after about 4-6 hours of gameplay), they will be allowed to start building their own structures (as long as they fit the theme). Besides the theme restriction, building will be limited only by the space provided by the land a player owns. By the time they reach this point, the missions they have completed should provide them with enough money to buy a decent amount of land.

    The proposal...

The server has four sections in need of work. the first two, server back end and game mechanics, are taken care of by yours truly. The other two sections are plot and set construction. Plot is being handled by Myself, and two other people.

The construction section is the primary area of concern. the map we are working with is huge! Really huge!(see it for your self!) In total it covers a massive 105.06 km2. Now we have no intention of filling this entire space with buildings/structures, but we do intend to set up a good number of decent sized towns and dungeons for new players to explore as they level up initially. And here we come to were help is needed.

What we are looking for is a number of players to help us build these towns and dungeons. The builders will be split into two groups, one to help build the towns, and another to help build the dungeons.

The town crew will mostly be making static buildings, and the structures that make up a town. These structures will include town walls, wells, simple shops, houses, guard shacks/stations/towers ect... All while maintaining a medieval theme or tribal theme, depending on the town. This crew may also be called upon to help the dungeon crew when building in a town. this group will be relatively autonomous, having much more freedom to build original structures that fit into the medieval european or tribal theme.

The dungeon crew will help in the construction of the plot specific structures and game play orientated structures. This will encompass all structures that players will interact with closely, including some structures in towns. this group will work closely with me and the other member of the original development team.

Now the only real requirement we have is that you have experience using world edit, as it is necessary for construction to go smoothly. While that is the only requirement, it should be noted that the dungeon crew, while involved in much more interesting work, will be under close supervision, and will only have limited creativity as they will be following our instructions. Please bear this in mind.

    How to apply...

To apply, simply reply to this post with two things:
    1. Describe your level of expertise in using world edit. Remember, being able to use the basics of world edit is a requirement to be on the build team.
    2. Specify which group you would like to work in. Its not guaranteed that you will in fact work in that group, but we will keep it in mind when we set up the groups.
If your screen shots show good hard work and fit the theme, then we will contact you via a private message here on the forums. There we will ask you for you minecraft user name (so we can add you to the temporary white list) and your email address (so we can stay in touch and report problems when somebody isn't online.) We will then provide you with the correct ip and link to the server and add you to the white list. Your minecraft forums name will also be added to this post as part of our servers build crew. (unless you ask us not to)

In return for your hard work, you will get the following benefits once the server opens to the public:
    • No cost to buy land, with the only limit being a restriction per month you can buy for free. After you reach the monthly limit you will have to pay with in-game money like every one else.
    • you will automatically be promoted to level 7 once the server opens. This rank will not be available to regular players. it will provide you with special extra permissions. (limited creative in the land you own, ability to fly, and more health and attack strength then Lv6 players.)
    • When something new needs to be added to the server, and we need extra hands, you may be called upon to help!
    • The builders showing most promise will be the first people offered an official staff position. "Promise" meaning you showed good team work, an ability to get along with others, and showed that you can handle potential problems in a responsible way.

Official site links and other use full links:

You can also ask any question you might have here as well!

Thanks for reading and we hope to see your awesome screen shots soon!

lol don't sweat it. i apparently cant read. i completely thought that youy post was by hurize. this is what happens when you try to post things at 5am!

as far as mods and texture packs go, i don't think its going to be as easy or free as it is on pc. in fact i imagine texture packs are gonna cost some coin for anything decent. mods on the other hand, probably not going to happen. microsoft is quite anal about third party anything that they haven't directly approved and a mod wouldnt be worth anything if microsoft got to say what it could or couldn't do.

It doesn't need a good gpu, just make sure your cpu is good at running single threaded programs(The server jar use only 1 core)thus "peformance per core" is importamt.

i don't understand how what your saying here has anything to do with the quoted text. maybe you quoted the wrong post?

at what point did i say one needed a good gpu? at most i said that if you were to build a pc right now, that you should pick a video card no less then a year old. but again thats if your building one. and all cpus are good at running single threads, its how they were all built. its only recently that cpus (x86 based ones anyway) have been able to multithread and use it on programs that support it.

the guidelines i listed earlier for building a pc pertained to a pc used with the client jar, not the server jar.

"performance per core" is not as important as having multiple cores, since your server will be running along side the operating system and sharing all of the pc's resources with it. and also the server jar only uses a single "thread" (not a necessarily a whole core), the amount of threads a core has or is good at using is irrelevant.

lastly, the red ring of death is not in any way minecrafts fault. that's Microsoft selling crapy consoles.
