On Vista, it's C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves. You need to have hidden folders visible to see the appdata folder. Once you find the folder for the world you want, just copy it over to your server folder and set your server to open the new world. If you can't figure out how to do that, delete (or just rename) your default online world and name the new world what it used to be. Then just restart the server.
Uh turn OFF the server BEFORE doing this or else will override
Have you created a static ip address for the server?
Have you made sure firewalls are off?
Are you runing this from your computer and trying to play at hte same time?
Oh and i hope you know 192.168.1.1 is a LAN ip not your WAN Ip
Well; your first mistake was using Linode ((kidding; I just happen to work for a competitor))
Here's the basics you're going to need to do in addition to setting up / getting running minecraft (don't know what errors you're getting; this is just additional steps you need to do to ANY new server before you think about running anything "production" on it.
1: CHANGE YOUR ROOT PASSWORD
2: Create a new user, which you're going to be doing your work with.
3: Add said user to sudoers
4: log out of root; ssh back as the new user you just created
5: Update the ssh config, I highly recommend changing the ssh port to something non-default. (my server gets port-scanned daily for open "default" ports. They can't try and brute force your passowrd if your iptables rules just drops the packets before they get a chance!)
4: Configure iptables. You need to be sure you're only allowing traffic across ports you want. If all you're using this server for is minecraft; you only need ports 25565 and whatever you set your ssh port to, plus ping (port 8) if you want your server to respond to that (helpful for monitoring). Reload iptables when your done, but DO NOT LOG OUT YET(see below)
5: Open a NEW ssh connection using the new port BEFORE CLOSING THE OLD ONE. You do this to ensure your changes worked, otherwise you just locked yourself out of your server. If you logged in ok, you can close the old one.
I'll put a legit walk through together soonish; and will link to it from here. Actually, I may just do a start to finish "base VPS to working minecraft server" walk through; surprised no one's done it yet!

also playing and hosting on the same COMPUTER is not recommended
I would think about geting a VPS
take a look in S&O fourm ( viewforum.php?f=1017 )
You would get much better as far as internet speed goes ( 100MB+ lines )
