From what I've read elsewhere it's corrupt world data that causes this.

ever think of making it so automated that it even ftp's and such <3 I tar it then download it then do the work then ftp it :smile.gif:

ssh keys, scp, rsync and bash make this really easy to do if you're running linux.

The server is but doing near a gig map is a little hard ontop of a server with 50+ online running. So I kind have to do it on windows my local pc.

    people on the server 24/7?

You tried -useMinimalRAM? Or use nice

On windows I you could use pagent (the putty ssh key agent) and pscp.exe for scripted file transfers. Not sure about running remote ssh commands in a batch file though.

    I use screen.

One screen for the server. One for a loop that does a backup each hour.

posted a message on socket stuck open :(
EDIT: This is on a linux server

So i accidentally closed my server today. There were players connected.

It had just saved so I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but when I went to start up the server again it would not let me!

    This is the error message:

*** 01:23:19 Failed to start the server!
    java.net.BindException: Address already in use
            at sun.nio.ch.Net.bind(Native Method)
            at sun.nio.ch.ServerSocketChannelImpl.bind(ServerSocketChannelImpl.java:119)
            at sun.nio.ch.ServerSocketAdaptor.bind(ServerSocketAdaptor.java:59)
            at sun.nio.ch.ServerSocketAdaptor.bind(ServerSocketAdaptor.java:52)
            at com.mojang.a.a.(Unknown Source)
            at com.mojang.minecraft.server.MinecraftServer.(Unknown Source)
            at com.mojang.minecraft.server.MinecraftServer.main(Unknown Source)

It seems there were open connections. I did a netstat and found two lines like these.

    tcp6       0 128481 ::ffff:204.15.199:25565 ::ffff:98.212.181:50105 FIN_WAIT1  -

One closed after ~15 minutes but I had to host my server on another port in the meantime.

What I really want to know is, how can I safely close my server, so that I'll be able to restart right away?

posted a message on players.txt what is it?
Is the players.txt meant to be a a list of current players connected to your server? Most of the time there are player names in this file that are not on the server.

I was thinking of writing a bash script that will tail the server log file to respond to player/admin commands. bash since I run my server on a linux box. Perhaps python would be better since then win guys could also run it.
