how the hell do you even know if he is making profit or not? what is his hourly rate for tech support? what are the bandwidth costs? and technically he is not making money on Minecraft, Notch is. He is making money on server hosting which is what has happened to every game since..hell...pong?
Now on to defining "making money". I seriously doubt he is making profit. and even if he is, so what? he provides services well above Minecraft capabilities in terms of moderation and such. There is a vent server and forums. How is that bad?
What I really want to know, and in all seriousness, why is this so important to you? Not being a smart ass but if we can address the root of the consternation then we can address it.
I went to a couple public servers and built and in less the 20 minutes on one server everything I had made was destroyed by griefers.
The other was about the same but it took longer. I do NOT want to build something to have it destroyed because someone is ADD, too lazy to build their own, mad at their mom or whatever. Please, show me a good reason for griefing. There isn't one. Communites canot be well established with such people in them. No admin responded to my queries on the public servers. I found Godcraft. Active admins and mods but they were overwhelmed by the smacktards out there who think "hahahaha lava is cool! you jelly? you mad bro?"
It seems a small donation is enough to dissuade them. Good, so be it. i chipped in and joined. Everyone is cool, fun, and friendly. Griefers still get on from time to time but they are usually found and banned quickly.
That is worth it to me.
As to Making money on and indie game server.
So what? servers cost money. the game isn't free so why should the server be? if someone want to run an open free public server then fantastic! they are magnanimous and generous and should be held up as a pillar in society. Sadly,not everyone has the cash to do so. So they don't.
If Notch wanted the servers to be free then he would have run them and not charged and would not have released the code.
If Minecraftforum.com wants to have only free,no donation, no fee, no money at all exchanged servers listed on their forums, or to have servers display their monies than that is their right.
I have to say, I have been there for a week and had no issues. someone gave me a diamond pick within minutes of joining and everyone has answered all my questions. We use Mumble and everyone is crazy fun to chat with. Asll they asked was i read the rules and abide by them. Pretty easy. I have enjoyed all my time on this server.
I tried it there today. WagaWaga and FlipT were Awesome! BUT...i started my house and not 20 minutes later jneevbe logged in, somehow my house ended up with a water source block in it, later a lava source block, holes in my walls. he built completely around my house. dropped his blocks all over my house. admin did nothing so I am out. Good luck flip and waga, you to are awesome.
Also, Flip: I left you a large chest full of stuff near your mine shafts. it has 3 rows of stuff. Jneevbe saw me put it there so it may be gone. I put a couple things in the charity chest which were disappearing as fast as they went in there.

I just started playing MC about 3 days ago. Since the servers were down I couldn't buy the game but I definitely will be.
I have played every night and love it so far.
I am looking for a group of relaxed mature players who won't destroy what I build and respect each others work. You don't have to like it but will respect it. And won't put up huge block letters of THIS PERSON SUCKS or whatever. As I am working and have a family I often have to run out to do this or that. I am not interested in wars. I love building with glass and stone in natural mountain formations. I also like water buildings though I am still figuring some of that out.
Is there a place I can see how you all work and see if we have matching personalities?
