60 fps is perfect for running any game really. Heck, I can get by with 30, as long as it's stable.
There is absolutely no reason to waste the processing power making your fps something that you can't even notice the difference of.
That's right. What's the point of going beyond 60FPS on normal gameplay (slow-mo videos not included, for this, I recommend at least 250FPS) if most monitors is limited to 60FPS?
Just a test:
gtmoraes@Athlon:~$ glxgears
18340 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3667.234 FPS
12510 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2501.914 FPS
12377 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2475.340 FPS
16308 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3261.543 FPS
18306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3661.181 FPS

GLXGears is a program for testing (at least for me) smoothness and draw rendering speed. It's just three colored gears running, but underneath it runs über fast, but you see it running normally.
I'm getting such FPS because my v-sync is turned off. Turning on, I get this:
gtmoraes@Athlon:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.010 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.997 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.998 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.999 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 50 requests (50 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
gtmoraes@Athlon:~$
and it is exactly the same image output as 2000~3000 fps, without stressing my GPU.
As I have a low-end graphic card (nVidia GT220), I leave v-sync off, otherwise it would also syncronize with the slowest frame.. and this for me is TOO SLOW
Actually, I think such high FPS might cause some frames skipping and animations going too fast on some programs, or even a video/audio desyncronization.
Once I found a way to reproduce my 1080p movie content into a much higher FPS than 23.97FPS that I was getting. I made all videos run at least on 33FPS (before, all videos managed to get a stable 23.97FPS, and with this mod, they jittered around 33 and 45FPS), and in one minute, the audio was completely desyncronized.
Also, on CS Source, I managed to pump it up to over 150FPS removing the limiter, amongst other things. most of the audio was cutted before the ending (like, a explosion was BOOOO--, a gunfire was BANGBANGBA-)
But that's my opinion and that's how it affected me.

What do you do on windows XP because that computer can't pick up my LAN server in 1.7.2
