Another way to fix this, I've found, is to make sure your render distance is on 'short' or 'tiny', since that really cuts down on how hard the program is working to make everything show up, freeing up a lot of memory and such. I suggest this because I have the same problem, but only when my render distance is up on settings like 'far'.
Check the game's memory usage in task manager. For me (and several others on the forums), 1.5 has a memory leak. This means the amount of RAM it uses steadily increases, until it can't run anymore. On my machine, it uses about 400,000K when the world is loaded, and this steadily increases until about 820,000K, when it crashes.
Some people have had success running the .jar version (rather than the .exe) through the command line and allocating more memory to minecraft. If it is a memory leak, though, I don't know as that will completely solve the issue.
i cant figrue out how to get the .jar version to work
I have been playing Minecraft since Alpha, and I have not had any problems.
However, recently my Minecraft started crashing as soon as it loads (it goes to a black screen and then blank).
I am greeted with this error in a text document in my Minecraft folder.

Now I understand that many of you are having the same exact problem as I am, and I have come across this conclusion.
The problem seems to persist with ATI Graphics cards users only.
I myself, have a ATI Mobility Radeon 5870HD, and I know many other individuals with this problem have the exact same graphics card as I do, or a very similar version.
If you look at the error given, it is from atio6axx.dll (which is a file used by the ATI drivers in system 32)
For some reason, this seems to be the problem; there is an incompatibility with the 1.5 update and our ATI graphics cards.
Unfortunately, there is no current solution to this problem.
Things I have tried:
-Restarting computer (PLEASE for the love of god, do not suggest this "solution" it obviously doesn't work)
-Deleting/reinstalling minecraft
-Updating gpu drivers
-Rolling back gpu drivers
Any other suggestions are very welcome.
I would wish for this topic to become the "official" discussion for this error, so we can have an organized effort to get minecraft working again.
But please, only post if you have this error.
Yeah, I have this problem too, and it's really annoying. You can still play it if you downloaded it though.
i cant it increases to my maximum gigabyte range and crashes you probably have more gigabytes so its taking longer i only have 2 gigabytes of ram and don't tell me to buy more because that wont solve the problem only delay it
I'm sorry, not meant to flame, but this is exactly why I don't trust Alienware after Dell bought them. Gaming laptop that cost $900 or whatever you paid for it should NOT have the Alienware tag on it. Alienware was all about quality/performance, no compromise to price. But dell is all about price, all compromise, and marketing. I don't see how the two should've married. They have deformed kids. ibuypower.com and other big lame companies who don't have enthusiast hearts are now competing for tier1alpha-elite-nuclear-quantum-metaphysical computers. I don't even know how to explain the last two "adjectives" but that's how it should be when you're buying "alienware."
With that said, rolling back drivers does help certain cards.
Also, have you checked your java version? It wasn't on your list.
A setting that might help is "single display optimization" which is commonly set to "multiple display" on laptops.
Yea, buddhism isn't a deity religion, it's more of a balance philosophy tied to other supernatural stuff. Try Mormons.
That's all I can think of. Good luck.
umm where does alienware come up any where in this conversation -.-
