Yes the events RenderPlayerEvent still exist. you can get the renderer from the event and then pass your own version of a class that extends PlayerRenderer to it
I am unsure if OP will reply but i definitely want to help you bring this to life. Your ideas are really quite amazing. Also this post was really well written.
I will start coding but could use your help with texturing and modeling.
Many mods are opensource Malachite_Sapphire. There no need to be afraid of someone stealing code or textures. Anyone wanting to steal assets or code can open up the jar file with winrar and deobfuscate it. Sharing the github link allows others to look and help by submitting pull request for updates and bug fixes making progress happen faster.

That's is not registering the static variable. That registry line is creating a new cow hide.
You can test this by deleting the public static item cow_hide = null and it will still show on creative.
That is why I think you should rethink how you are doing the registry and follow the GitHub format.

This is very messy. I don't see where you ever assigned a value to cow_hide
Are any of your items even working?
it seems to only be set to null and never called
Here is github from Technovision that has tutorial for Items and deferred registry:

I listed an example below, you would replace with your items.
Example of stone hoe being replaced with apple on destruction:

This should be simple.
Just use an event handler, example of having zombies drop 32 apples instead of rotten flesh:

I don't think anyone is trying to steal code. There is no pay off for doing so. They can learn or offer suggestions.
