nothings stopping things from spawning outside your little ball of light,

Mobs won't spawn close to you, unless there is a mob spawner. They have to spawn at least X blocks away, but no farther then Y blocks away. I forget the actual numbers though. Having a torch on you would actually make no difference to the mobs spawning.

I DO like the strike to light idea. That way you can place them without having to worry about them reducing the durability.

I think the recipe should probably involve a cactus in some way. Since that is kinda what they are used for at the moment.

Alright. Time to write up my own suggestions for your suggestion.

    Packs.
Honestly, I thought this would be very stupid, but after reading through it I like it a LOT. HOWEVER, some things to note. Notch has removed the ability to store items in the crafting grid. I don't think the packs should let you, EXCEPT as a special bonus for the Workbench Pack.

When unequiping a pack, it should automatically dump all items on the ground. including the unique slot items. Same for when they are broken. There is really no reason to get rid of them.

On the subject of damage, I think it should changed based off of difficulty:
Easy: Only loses durability from attacks from behind.
Normal: Only loses durability from attacks from behind or to the side.
    Hard: Loses durability whenever attacked.

Capes could be made a lot better. Scrap the player emblem idea. Just make a new png file in your texture packs, or to upload online, called capes.png. This will be a grid that lets you make a custom image for every color of cape. Your black cape could have a skull on it, while the white cape has a cross. This will be uploaded to the server along with you char.png.

    Arms.
Really not a fan of this. Just seems to broken, and odd. Moving right along.

    Offhand.
Shields? Yes awesome. No argument there. Maps? Great idea, hope its added. Dual wielding weapons and tools? OH BOY HERE WE GO. No. Just no. Full stop. This bugs the ever living crap out of me every time I see it in a game. ANY game. Dual wielding is the stupidest idea ever. Guns, swords, picks, doesn't matter. Its just not something you will ever seen done in real life. Swords are nearly IMPOSSIBLE to block with in your off hand. And even harder to fight with. Historically, no culture has EVER trained in dual wielding, despite what action movies and video games would have you believe. The human body just isn't built to do that. The only thing that is even remotely possible to do it with is a knife, and thats actually more limiting. You have more menuverability with an open hand ready then with two holding knives, and you wouldn't even do much damage to someone with it. But this is a huge pet peeve of mine, and I'll just stop it right there. But I really hope dual wielding tools isn't added. Plus, that doesn't even make sense. Can you honestly imagine someone with two hand axes chopping down a tree with them?

An idea for books. A new shapeless recipe that involves one quill, one empty book, and one written book. This will make a book that is a copy of the written book, and will return the original book to you (kinda like the cake recipe)

    Ammunition.
A neat idea. I've always been in support of a ammo slot, and more ammo types.

    Wildcard.
Belts. Totally. These would act as a kind of 'misc armor/pack' slot. You could make an iron belt, or something, and it would provide a small bonus to your armor, or you can make a utility belt, which would add a secondary gui to the side of your normal bag with some more slots. You can add a ammo pouch, which would allow for a second type of ammo that will automatically fill in your ammo slot when your done, etc. Basically, keep it as a wild card. Various minor bonuses.

COUNTER REPLY TO THE POST THAT NINJA'D ME:

Any stories you write will never be read by anyone else, and if you know something well enough to write a book about it, why do you need the book?

Your forgetting about us multiplayer players again. Sticking books would be a GREAT alternative to THOUSANDS of signs everywhere. Just stick a bookcase in the spawn room with lots of copies of the same book, to remind players of some of the custom stuff on the server, who is in charge of what, what some of the local sites are (I AM SICK OF GIVING TOURS DAMNIT) or even just a helpful list of recipes, so players don't have to alt-tab to minecraftwiki.

Since when do you store sugar cane, string, leather, signs, compasses, watches, records, and dyes on your bookshelves. Call me strange, but my bookshelves in my house are used for storing books, and only books.

I assumed they are meant to function as both bookshelves and kitchen cabinets. Think of any fantasy setting with wizards. They always have a book case. That book case always has spell components, crystal balls, etc. on it.

    ...

GOD DAMNIT NINJA'D AGAIN. Screw it, I'm just gonna post.

Oh look. Its this thread again.

Yes it would be nice. Yes it is possible (there even used to be a mod that did it. One of the most popular mods too)

But really, its a little game breaking. The only way I could see this working is if torches had a durability meter. Any time they are lit (whether placed, or in hand) it will slowly go down. Once it is empty, the torch is destroyed. Considering that notch is already planning something along those lines for placed torches, it doesn't seem like to much of a stretch.

But simply holding a single torch and being able to fully explore caves? Way to overpowered. I would know, like I said, I played that mod. You only ever needed to make about a dozen torches. Some to keep your house safe, and a few to place just before a fight so you can fight with a sword in the light. Other then that you NEVER needed to place a torch.

If notch does add this, it will likely be at the same time as he makes the Lantern update, and in a way similar to the way I mentioned.

posted a message on A Rant on Suggestions and Redstone
On the subject of magic redstone:
Yes it is magic. There is really no doubt about that. HOWEVER, it already has certain rules in place. It is a mechanical form of magic. You can't expect me to believe that sticking some redstone on top of two sticks makes a magic wand that shoots fireballs. However, it could make a remote trigger that will automatically power whatever you hit with it. The dispencer works by magic yes. But it is mechanical. When it gets a charge, it fires the bow. Simple enough.

Redstone on pork WON'T bring it back to life, Redstone on fire won't make a pocket portal, Redstone on a sapling won't grow a different kind of tree, etc.

Redstone is magic beyond a doubt. But it is not the only FORM of magic. It should not be used as the automatic go to for not knowing how to make a recipe work.

    On the subject of vehicles:
That is a very touchy subject for this fanbase. Quite frankly, I don't want them in survival. THAT SAID. I do hope they are added. Not to survival, I JUST got done saying it I don't want it there. But notch has already said there will be more modes, and I would be fine with having a mode that was all about jumping from planet to planet or something. However, that isn't even CLOSE to what survival 'feels' like. If anything, notch could just release 'official' mods. Mods that can be installed to make the game that way, but are by no means required by everyone. You only need it if you want it.

I have an idea for this. Maybe there could be a command like /trust (playernamehere) so you trust them to build on your blocks and whatnot. BUT if they greif you orsomething and you dont want them to destroy your blocks you can say /untrust (sameplayernamehere) so they cant anymore

But then I can surround you in dirt blocks and you can't delete them because I didn't "Trust" you.

There's no way around this problem. Get a new server and hope for the best :tongue.gif:

You are underestimating griefers. They would surround you in glass, and then make you WATCH as they flood your entire creation with lava.

In SMP there is a 'safe area' around the spawnzone, where nothing can be placed or destroyed. Are there any mods out there that completely get rid of this 'feature?'

I'm going to be running the Survival Island Scenario with some friends, and that is going to be a HUGE problem.

Wouldn't this make bread kinda overpowered?

Not really, considering it takes wheat, which you have to actually grow, or would have to use bonemeal on it, which requires killing skeletons, which unlike pigs DO fight back. However, I think having the cut bread heal 1 heart instead would be better. A trade off for it being stackable.

There is a mod that kinda does this already. It doesn't have buttered bread, but it does have butter, and bread cut in half, so I'm sure the creator will include it if you ask him to nicely. The mod also has cheese and burgers. YUM!

    viewtopic.php?f=25&t=120185

Get the Cheeseburger Mod and Dairy mod.

But I agree. It would be nice to have this kind of stuff in the base game, without the need for modding.

I don't. That would only make things WORSE.
Now all they have to do is place a bunch of sand inside your building, and laugh as you aren't able to do anything to get rid of it. Or lava that can't be picked back up.
    No thanks.

Hmmm, then there would be no reason to make the 'normal' tools.

What if these tools only had half of the normal durability for that tier, to balance out with their double use?

posted a message on YARS: Yet Another Redstone Suggestion
So I have a few ideas about redstone. The community goes nuts about the stuff, but sometimes the suggestions for it can get a little out of hand(ENOUGH with the bluestone threads people. We get it) , especially when people begin combining it with gold (1 dust surrounded by 8 gold blocks is the most common recipe I have seen) So I would like to attempt to make a much more simple suggestion, but would still have a much larger impact on the game, and could give birth to some REALLY cool creations. I realize a few of these have already been suggested (and at least one used to be a mod) however I felt I should include them for completions sake. All recipes will use :RedShroom: to indicate redstone and :--+: to indicate redstone torches.

    Changes to existing blocks:
Redstone Ores always drop exactly 5 Redstone Dust.
Redstone ore (both natural and manufactured) will now output power any time it would be lit up, IE whenever it is mined or stepped on.
Dispensers will shoot out armed TNT.
Dispensers will place minecarts and boats, if minetrack or water respectively is in front of it.
Dispensers will act as a source block for water or lava, if it contains a bucket of that liquid. It will let that liquid flow as long as it receives power. While producing a liquid, the bucket will be emptied. The bucket will be refilled when the dispenser no longer recieves power. If the bucket is removed, then the liquid simply ceases to exist.

    :RedShroom: :|: :RedShroom:
    [] :|: []
    Flip Flop
This torch will act as a T-Flip Flop. Basically, when it receives power, it will turn on, and will stay on even when the power source stops. Then, when it receives power again, it will turn off, and stay off after the power stops.

    [] :--+: []
    :--+: :RedShroom: :--+:
    [] :--+: []
    Pulsar
This will create a torch that will pulse on and off. It will not except any input, it will only output a pulsating signal.

    :RedShroom:
    :|:
    :RedShroom:
    Signal Booster
Basically a torch whos default state is off. When it receives power, it will output power. Used to extend the range of the redstone, without using inverters.

    [] :Glass: []
    :Glass: :RedShroom: :Glass:
    Light sensor
Will output power as long as there is light level 9 or higher on its block.

    :RedShroom: :RedShroom:
    :RedShroom: :RedShroom:
    Redstone sand
Default state is off. This block will float in the air, as normal, but when it receives power, will become affected by gravity, and fall. It will continue to output power while falling and after it lands. Hitting it or supplying it with power will turn it back off.
Additional idea by mrwormy: Touching powered redstone sand shocks and deals damage to the player.

    :RedShroom: :stone: :RedShroom:
    :stone: :RedShroom: :stone:
    :RedShroom: :stone: :RedShroom:
    Redstone ore
This will just let you store redstone as an ore again.

    :RedShroom: :RedShroom: :RedShroom:
    :RedShroom: :RedShroom: :RedShroom:
    :RedShroom: :RedShroom: :RedShroom:
    Redstone Block
Acts as a constant power source. Like a redstone torch, but doesn't turn off when it receives a power.

    :Red: + :GoldBar:
    Timer
A shapeless recipe made by combing a redstone block, and a watch. When placed, a popup will come up with an interface that looks like the watch. Simply rotate it to a 'start' time, and hit okay, then repeat for an end time. During that time, the block will produce power. Otherwise, it will not. Does not accept input.

    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :RedShroom: :cobblestone:
    Fire Trap
Acts similar to a dispenser with arrows, but produces Ghast Fireballs when powered. Infinite ammo, but has a 5 second delay between shots.

    [] :brick: []
    :brick: :brick:
    [] :RedShroom: []
    Fireplace
Default state is off. When it receives power, if the block above it is exposed, it will light it on fire. The fire will last as long the block continues to receive power, and will turn off when it no longer does. The fire will not spread to other blocks.

    :Furnace: + :RedShroom:
    Steam Furnace
Acts as a normal furnace, but will output a signal as long as it is burning.

    New
    :--+:
    :Iron:
    Mobile Charge
Another power block, this time as something thats not a block at all. The mobile charge is made by combining a minecart with a redstone torch. It will act as a normal minecart, which can be ridden, or have a chest or furnace added to it. When a mobile charge passes next to a piece of redstone dust, it will power it. For obvious reasons, this will NOT provide power to minecart junctions, but CAN provide power to a wire leading to a junction. This is too keep them from ALWAYS toggling EVERY junction, while still letting them toggle ones specifically set up fro them to toggle.

    New
    :RedShroom: + :Leaves:
    Adhesive Redstone
Made by combining redstone with a slimeball. Allows you to place the redstone on walls.

    New
    :RedShroom: + :GP:
    Redstone Fuse
Acts and is placed as normal redstone dust, but will only stay charged for 5 seconds, after which it disappears.

    New
    :RedShroom: + :YFlower:
    Bright Redstone Dust
Made by combining Redstone with Glowstone dust. Acts and is placed as normal redstone, but produces the same amount of light as a redstone torch when powered.

Comments and suggestions welcomed. Any other good ideas will be added to this post, with proper credit given.

Why craft the larger display? Why not have it work like a chest, where they instead automatically link up. The larger display case will allow for more items, like placing 3 of them in a 1x2 space.
