Expand the influence of your minecraft domain into the nether. You can also build an automatic minecart-storage system. A wall with a moat of fire and cactus.

I built an underground base (won't make that mistake again). A creeper wandered into it, blew up the ceiling which gave way to a dungeon full of skeletons who then proceeded to rape me.

Or we could use gold, just an idea.

#1. Also I always hated the idea of monsters dropping money, it would seem wierd for a creeper to drop a bit of gold coins, or a skeleton, or enderman, or a spider.

So I can't support mobs dropping money.

#2. Also ripping off Merchants for common material is just stupid, couldn't they just travel to these lands, like a merchant could spawn in a desert bordering a snow biome, it'd be just easy grinding.

#3. Merchant = Over powered. 'Nuff said. A pigman isn't explosive proof.

It's not a good idea to have currencies that can be used otherwise (say make power rails). Slimeballs used to be the best option (not any more). Apples are ok because they can only be spawned by an op, but you can eat them, so that's no good. Sponge is your best bet, or just barter.

    This...

...and these were definitely on my mind too. One of my favorite things about Minecraft is digging out a "realistic" mine, but right now there is really no point in doing that.

At the risk of derailing my own topic...reducing the maximum size of inventory stacks would be another great way to make mine carts more useful...I mean, right now characters can carry a ridiculous amount of stuff. That said, if you any of you all want to discuss that point, we should start a new thread...let's keep this one on the topic at hand.

The characters carry a ridiculous amount of stuff indeed: If you have your inventory full of gold blocks, that's 2,304 cubic meters of gold, weighing in at 98,000,000 pounds or 49,000 tons. And that's just in your pockets and hands, minecrafters don't even carry backpacks.

I thought about this myself, and it appears to be a great suggestion. Currently in SMP, people can make a communal mine. In that mine, there is a flat rate at which ore can be found, it never changes. This way, when you want to find ore, you just dig a long tunnel off the main shaft and you'll get ore. No one gets mad that you're "stealing" from their mine, because they can just go make a similar tunnel and yield nearly the same results.

With this new system of ore deposits, mining would be kept more secretive, just like in real life. There would be a benefit to venturing off to prospect far away, just like in real life. And when you do find a deposit, there's a lot, and you if you keep its location a secret, you'll mass produce ores people will buy.

These deposits don't have to be solid blocks of ore. It is probably better if it were a large area (say a few chunks) with a much higher concentration of ores than in a standard chunk. This way, you would have to excavate a large volume of stone, but the yield would be much worth the mass excavation (way more so than in current minecraft). The deposits shouldn't be exclusive to only iron and coal, but to all minecraft minerals. Just like in real life where there are diamond, gold, copper, iron, coal, tin, and silver mines, (etc.), where that specific mineral can be expected in high concentrations.

I've always wanted to have to use minecarts with chests to ship ore back to my mining outpost, and this is how it can be done. I think it's a great idea, and if it isn't added into the game, someone ought to make a mod like it.
