Those are my guesses.
Although, it kind of makes sense. Why would brick spawn naturally, as a part of the terrain? -

But that's not the point. The point is that right now, 255 is the max number of blocks that can be coded into the game under different ids.
As another poster pointed out, there can be blocks with the same ids, such as the wool blocks or different half steps. But really, they're all the same block, just with different textures.

2. Craft, with previously crafted workbench, a pickax and ax
3. Collect more wood with ax
4. Collect cobblestone and coal with pickax.
5. Make stone tools, and repeat the process.
6. As night falls, build a dirt hut with the necessities (chest, furnace, bed, crafting table)
