I think Iron Ladder should be added to the game as a solid block that's climbable and doesn't need any block behind it unlike wood ladders and climbable vines. It could be suspended in mid-air just like any other block besides signs, sand, and gravel. The elements would be:
Speed: (If Mojang wants to add it)
If powered by redstone then you can climb 2x-5x faster, depending on the signal strength.
Functionality:
It can be pushed by pistons to make secret mountain entrences, harder parkour, and more!
Look:
It can be used to make many buildings look better such as an Eiffel Tower or water tower.
