You can have double doors to your house as long as your bedroom has a single door. And, this is key, you need to place the door from outside the room you're building so that it's flush with the exterior of the wall. The other way to keep your bed safe in a house with double doors is to make sure it's several levels above (or below, I guess, I haven't tried that) the doors. It took me forever to find this out but now my dreams are finally zombie & skeleton free.

posted a message on Need Help Fixing My Old Roller Coaster Using Powered Rails
I have this roller coaster - it's very long, goes up and down and through tunnels and around a mountain - that worked great with boosters. Now I'm trying to convert it to powered rail but I'm having a lot of trouble with the uphill grades. How many blocks uphill will a powered rail propel a cart? How many powered rails can you lay end to end before they stop working? I'm not very good with redstone engineering (actually I'm terrible and it confuses me) so I've just been using detector rails to power the powered rails. Is there a simple way to get my roller coaster going again?

posted a message on Beta 1.4 bug report & list of bugs
I was walking in the forest and I found like 8 wolves. I could only take 2. I came back home, and BAM- a crash. I thought, oh well, only a crash. But when I reloaded there were no wolves
    !

This happened to me yesterday as well: I had four wolves - Blocky 2 (Blocky 1 fell afoul of a creeper, RIP) Pixel, Q-bo and Square - who were running around being annoying when all of a sudden boom, black screen crash. When I came back, they were gone forever. Irritating, because now I have no bones and it will be a while before I can find myself a Blocky 3.

posted a message on Anyone Know How to Build a City/Town?
I just let mine grow organically by thinking about what I'd want in a town I was living in. Started with the Inn & Lounge (well, yeah) and then put in a library and an art museum and then some shops and a theater/music hall and it's just kept on growing from there, what with a school and a post office and a swimming pool and a train station and so on. As others have said, you start making up stories about what things are used for and what people need - I actually started worrying about the lack of affordable housing - and it sort of all comes together. And then I think of stuff I'd like to build, like a tugboat and a suspension bridge and a replica of the Georgian Ministry of Roads building in Tbilisi, so I add them. I like my town - someday I'll figure out how to make a Minecraft video and then I'll put it up. In the meantime there are some pictures here. http://minecraftworldjournal.blogspot.com/.

oh and yeah I play without mods or hacks and in normal mode. More fun that way, for me at least.

Thanks for the quick response! So birch and pine trees don't grow on old chunks - I thought not but it's good to have it confirmed. Back to digging around underneath them, then.

Hey, I'm not sure if this is covered anywhere in this thread - I looked, but with 54 pages I could well have missed it - but is there any way to tell if you're on a newly generated chunk of an old world? I am searching for lapis in a world that dates back to Alpha before the Halloween update; went exploring; found a biome with birch and pine trees and thought it must be new enough for lapis but no. Two caves and an entire diamond pick's worth of mining later and no lapis, although I am considering building a blingy house out of gold and iron ore blocks. Argh. Help, please. I need blue sheep.

posted a message on Build Ideas for Netherrack?
I made a statue out of it and then set it on fire, so I have a giant reclining nude on fire floating over the bay. It looks - okay. Not as wonderful as I was hoping. Since then I just use it for a wall of fire around the yard, boring, but practical.

Not being able to build furniture. I want furniture! Dude needs a better couch than three blocks of wool after mining all day.

Getting the perpetual motion minecart propeller boosty glitch things - this thing: http://www.tvclip.biz/video/yZ5u2DsZHQs ... power.html (I cannot for some reason make a decent link) but anyway I don't have any idea what you call it - to go in the right direction. Yargh. Also, animals on tracks. If they can kill me by pushing me off a cliff, then I should be able to run them over. It's only fair.

The lag when you're going into an all new area is annoying, particularly since it doesn't bother the monsters. That could be my computer though, so I guess it doesn't really count. This annoyance would include that bug that places two blocks instead of one: it goes hand in hand with the lag & is only in unexplored areas.

And, umm, I think that might be it. Well, creepers, who doesn't hate creepers? They are hissing evil incarnate.

posted a message on Been Lost in a Cave? Take some tips!
What's been working for me is fairly simple - just put the majority of your torches only on the left as you go in and use the occasional pumpkin at big intersections. Sometimes you have to put torches on the right but if most of them are on the left then you can pretty easily reverse direction and follow the right hand torches on your way back.

Or when the left hand method fails, go somewhere you can't hear water (this part is important!;-) ) and dig upwards in a sort of six block shaft, making sure you're never directly under the block you're taking out in case of gravel or sand. Sometimes when you do this though you'll end up digging for hours and emerge on top of a mountain but then, hey, you're on top of a mountain.
