I'm fairly certain that all the other threads with that error as the title that are being responded to are probably the same issue. Might wanna check those out before making a new thread.
Oh no, someone has to pay to play a sandbox game with a 1 time fee. What is the world coming to? The reason why is because the implemented LAN. Why would they let you play free with other people?
mojangs multilayer servers are down till tomorrow. certain sites that host servers are up. about 1 in 20 servers are working atm.
edit: they just got back up
edit 2: since ppl all got on at the same time the servers were flooded and are down again
Well, TBH, I recommend buying a server due to the threat of a DDoS, but anyways,
Try changing your port (which you can do in the properties)
Than forward the NEW port
If that doesn't work, please reply, so I can try to help more!
Sorry for my quick, bad answer, Im currently on my phone.
Unless your server is popular or you pissed off some people, the likelihood of a DDOS attack is minimal.
@OP, can you access the server with the server's internal IP address? It is normally 192.168.x.x
If you can, you know that the issue isn't within the internal network. If it works, try to connect to it via your external IP, the one using whatsmyip. If you can't access your server, that means your router is not forwarding the port for the server.
We flooded their server status page and it made too many requests to check the status of the servers so we broke it. Whenever the service gets interrupted, we as the MC community of players tend to accidentally other stuff.

Because nobody before you said that, right?

Offline mode with a plugin that deals with authentication most likely.

You would be correct. Try using -Xmx2048M -Xms1024M again. If you using 64bit java with those parameters, it will work.

When the sessions server stays online, gets fixed, and isn't flooded with requests.
