in my opinion, it's safe to allocate half of your total ram. anymore than that, and it may cause a bsod in windows(or a total system crash), and w/e it is for macs.
512mb for 1gb,
1024mb for 2gb,
1536mb for 3gb,
2048mb for 4gb,
2560mb for 5gb,
3072mb for 6gb,
3584mb for 7gb,
4096mb for 8gb, so on and so forth.

2. if you use an intel chipset, disable OpenGL, it isn't compatable.
3. change performance to 'max FPS', so it uses max cpu/gpu to perform best quality.
4. open your gpu's image display settings, and make sure it's set to 'performance', rather than quality.
5. uninstall chrome.
6. allocate more memory to java, see: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/350344-allocating-more-memory-to-java-windows/
7: restart your pc.

intel doesn't support OpenGL, disable it
@jeremy, this probably applies to you too.

go to:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
within this foldier should be a 'Texture Packs' folder, drop the texture pack .zip file in it. if your mac automatically decompressed it(use to be common?), re-compress it.

is there enough memory being allocated to java to handle the client? there's a guide to add more if not. without enough memory, it could cause an unstable/laggy/crashing client.

that's not nearly as difficult as you seem to think it is.

chrome causes many issues as well. unknown to the general public, chrome receives near no support from many major plugins(namely, adobe). the entire browser is written in flash, and is as unstable as they come.

texture packs have no affect on in-game performance while they're not being used(unless, of course, you're totally out of hdd space or something).
allocating more memory to java is a quick fix, if that doesn't fix it, make sure your version of java is updated.

make sure, in your minecraft options, you have 'max fps' ticked. the OpenGL function can also cause a significant amount of fps lag if your gpu is compatible and already stressed.
i'll ask of your cpu and physical memory usage before and while minecraft is launched(viewable at the bottom of your task manager). if you're averaging over 20% before minecraft is launched, also possibly list other programs using 40k+ memory.
if this is proper, i'll assume it's related to your gpu. perhaps you're set for more quality than performance, which even quality freaks have come to terms with.

no they wont?
i agree op, it's depressing how easy the game has become. not only is combat pointlessly easy, but ores are significantly more common. the newgen have ruined this game, much like they ruin others.

if so, close your browser and reopen minecraft.

crackers aren't "hacking". it guesses a password from a predefined list of every possibly combination of letters/numbers/symbols/etc. that's included in the wordlist. you could google these list, and a program to do it for you.
it's still illegal, though. enjoy your ban.

so i blew up his house, tossed his items in my incinerator, and got banned for griefing.
