if you're using a brand-name computer, look it up online and see if there's any updates for it through the manufacturers website.

check your antivirus/firewall settings, and assure there's no conflicts(add an exception if there is)

error? is this crash after you get in-game or does it happen while you're still in the main menu? are you able to perform any actions before the crash? is the client producing immense amounts of lag?

my friend's mouse does this. he hits it against his desk and it works fine for a few hours. possible solutions:
unplug your mouse and uninstall its software. after it's gone, plug it back in and let it reinstall itself. if the problem persist, look up its product id and see if there's an upgrade to it somewhere. if none, unplug it again, take the mouse apart, and clean the area below the buttons(carefully, they're quite fragile). if, after even this, the problem continues, you need a new mouse.
pro tip: wash your hands more.

does this error carry over to another world? have you recently removed any mods/downgraded your version with newer version features?

as far as your computer goes, it should be running minecraft fine. you may want to try activating OpenGL, as its known to increase performance if it's supported.
easiest way to detect heavy programs is through your task manager, and looking for things using 75k+. this number is different based on the amount of ram you have, but should hold true to 4gb. if you're using firefox or chrome, consider closing them while trying to play the game. chrome's "hurr i'm built out of flash" nature is as unstable as a broken line of code in cpp, and firefox is notoriously known for its cpu usage overtime(it also causes a well-known cache error with minecraft).
if you don't have it already, download and run ccleaner. this could easily double your fps if you haven't done it before. i suspect this to be relevant to your strange fps drop, as this game seems to be a magnet for cache errors.

your better judgment, use it.
i highly, highly suggest building a new computer.

ati's anti-aliasing handler isn't smart enough to disable itself when the game has its own methods for doing so, so there's 2 algorithms trying to address the same image quality issue. this probably causes a considerable amount of fps lag, as well. i, personally, do not own a radeon card(nor do i ever plan to, i've spent enough time on gpu-related forums to know better), but there must be an option to disable its anti-aliasing.
is there no 3d setting page in ati's control panel? within this, there could be a list of features or an advanced settings button.
