Amazing! :smile.gif: Great production quality on the video, too.

I, for one, would be interested in downloading the texture pack you're using...also, you're using the ambient occlusion plugin, right? I tried to install that once, but it ended up crashing minecraft hard every time I attempted to run it...do you happen to know if it works with 1.2.6?

posted a message on Why Not Kill Yourself?
Frankly, I don't think there's such a thing as cheating in a singleplayer sandbox game. There are no set goals or requirements save the ones you impose on yourself. If you want to survive as long as possible, fine. If you want to only walk on grass and build elaborate bridges over sand, gravel, etc. go right ahead. The beautiful thing about the game is that you get to choose how to challenge yourself.

Even in the interests of playing the game "realistically", I think that killing yourself to recover health makes sense, considering you have full knowledge that you'll be instantly reincarnated without any penalty. If people had such guarantees in real life, I'm sure they'd go to less trouble to avoid death. :3

posted a message on What was your first thought seeing your first creeper??
Lucky for me, the first creeper I encountered had managed to fall into a 2-brick-deep hole and was fruitlessly attempting to jump out when I noticed it. I studied it for a bit wondering what the hell it was, then attempted to punch it to death...I'm sure you can guess the rest. :SSSS:

when you just smelt iron ore, what comes out is pig iron. yes, it actually has a high carbon content (due to smoke from the coal. pig iron has too much carbon in it to count as steel.

cast iron, in its earliest forms, needs to be oxygenated during its cooking. essentially, you need a bellows pumping air into the chamber. also, you really need higher temperatures than just iron's melting point. for this you use coke, which is coal that has been baked to remove oxygen and water content (which would be like putting coal in the top and bottom of the furnace). approximately 17th century technology, which is close enough for making rails, though that's wrought iron.

steel is made when you take pig iron, recook it carefully, pumping high-pressure oxygen in to the bottom so that it percolates up through the molten iron. separate out the slag etc. and ultimately, aiming to reduce the carbon content to 2% or less. huge industrial process, giant machines. complex chemistry to analyze and verify the carbon content to judge whether you've ended up with steel. this is approximately 19th century technology.

and you call it "flint and steel" because you're a modern person and that's what we call it. iron is perfectly capable of generating a spark off of flint. in fact, it's the iron in the steel that does it

This is great information. :smile.gif: As for the rest of you complaining about people nitpicking over a game, I'm personally glad for this discussion since I've learned quite a bit about iron vs. steel in the process.

posted a message on ██ The Ambient Occlusion controversy ██
AFAIK, the controversy was over distributing the game through a channel other than minecraft.net, which basically amounts to piracy. Since MrMessiah started distributing a patcher rather than the modified game code, I'm pretty sure this is a non-issue.

posted a message on During the night, do you think it's too dark to see?
I don't understand why whenever the topic of a moving light source is raised somebody mentions that it's computationally infeasible to recalculate the lighting model every second. I can see why this would be a problem if you needed to adjust the logical light levels of your surrounding tiles (e.g. for spawning, plants growing, etc. etc. etc.), but the main reason people want a moving light source is simply so that they can see. In OpenGL implementations since time immemorial, this is as easy as enabling one of the dynamic lights and setting its position to the player's current location -- no lighting recalculation required.

I'm sure there are some other wrinkles...for instance, perhaps enabling lighting will require him to rethink how to display areas lit by traditional light sources, since they'll all be black if you just turn on lighting and only have one light source. Still, it doesn't seem "computationally infeasible" just to allow the player to see what's in front of them irrespective of the logical light level.

As for night being too dark, there should be some kind of in-game gamma adjustment. At work I can see fine, but at home it's pretty much pitch black, and my laptop's video card drivers sadly don't allow gamma adjustment on a per-application basis. I'm not going to clamor for it, but hopefully someday...
