If you would share the idea instead, then modders will know if they are up for it or not.

Please, please, please use Java Naming Conventions!
First, enclose your rendering code (OpenGL, tesselator) code, with GL11.glPushMatrix() and GL11.glPopMatrix(). This is to prevent interference with other rendering code.
What I'm going to write next is a few possible ways, but I'm writing this purely from memory so it may or may not work.
First, try use the following: GL11.glColor4f(1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f);
Or, switch this: tessellator.setColorRGBA_F(0.9F * f2, 0.3F * f2, 1.0F * f2, 0.3F); [/i]simply to any other colour.

You need to override readFromNBT() and writeToNBT().
In writeToNBT(NBTTagCompound nbt) simply create a new integer tag:
InReadFromNBT(NBTTagCompound nbt) set your direction:
if (nbt.hasKey("Direction")) direction = nbt.getInteger("Direction");
else direction = 0;

It's about time that I have given birth to a new tutorial!
Adding NBT Data to Items - this tutorial should help you store more data than allowed 16-bit data in normal item damage values.

No, your laptop can handle it. Try to play in a cold air conditioned room, or buy a laptop cooler. It's probably overheating.
Edit. Check your temps, make sure those aren't extraordinarily high.

First, sorry for double posting. Double posting aside, brings to number two:
A new tutorial is released!
In this tutorial I will be explaining how you make blocks in 1.8, and how the new block rendering method works in 1.8.
I really hope this clears confusion in early 1.8 modders.
