posted a message on why the heck did notch leve mo yang - sonicthehedgehog

(important point. he sold Mojang, not Minecraft)

    What is with this nonsense?

Minecraft is property of Mojang, which Microsoft bought, so by default, Microsoft now owns the Minecraft IP. Mojang itself is worthless, so paying out 2.5Billion for a worthless company is stupid. All the money is in the Minecraft brand, which is what Microsoft really bought, otherwise the people at Mojang could just quit and take Minecraft with them, but that's not how this works.

Also, Notch did NOT get the full 2.5Billion. That money was divided among the owners of Mojang at the time. Notch just got the most of it at roughly half.

Because of that, personally? I don't think he's one of the greatest developers of the current generation. He might be owner of one of the greatest games of the current generation objectively, but purely based on the lifetime of Minecraft, I wouldn't call him the greatest developer.

Anyone who thinks him the greatest developer is... ignorant. He had the right idea at the right time when the market wanted it the most. Must like why WoW is considered one of the greatest MMOs despite it being far from the first of its kind. It just hit the market at the right time.

While I agree that turning off the firewall is not recommended is not as dangerous as you reply seems to imply.

Port forwarding tells your router which computer inside your network to forward a connect request (based on a port or range). It gets you through the firewall on the router but is independent of the firewall that the computer maintains. This being the case if you were to turn off your firewall on you computer you are not immediately at risk unless your router becomes compromised (or you forward all/critical ports or configure your computer as the DMZ).

Given the lack of knowledge regarding networking and computer safety most people have around here, Its better to air on the side of caution with things like this. Yeah, telling someone they should turn off their firewall isn't the end of the world, but its best practice to never use that as a solution. If even one person gets attacked because their firewall was off because some unknown person on a forum said to do so, then it is bad advice.

Anyone who works in IT will agree, most people are... not smart with computers. And this forum is filled with "overnight networkers" who know enough to be dangerous. I don't mess around when it comes to computers and being safe.

As an American citizen, yes, I do have the right to judge people however I wish to judge them. However, you are over a year late to the party. Mr IStealyourRAM has corrected his mistakes and improved his grammatical composition.

So, if you wish to talk about manners, let's talk about your beating of a dead horse long after it's decomposed.

I know, but i turned it off, and it worked for me so.

Yes, because you've literally removed the wall between you and the internet, which is a completely stupid thing to do. You should only ever do it for testing ONLY.

And its ironic that you say to port forward first, because port forwarding is what grants access through your firewall, so that whole step is pointless if you are just going to turn the damn thing off.

You are an over-night networker. You don't really understand what you are saying, and that makes you very dangerous to people. Please don't instruct people to turn off their firewall ever again. You put their network security at risk, and people's personal information become exposed.

What is DNS and DHCP anyway?

What's the difference of TCP and UDP?

DNS - Domain Name System. In short, its what converts a website address into an IP address for communication over the internet. IE: www.google.com converts into an IP address between 74.125.1.1 and 74.125.255.255

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is a service rin on your router (in most cases) and deals with assigning IP addresses to deviced on your home network so they can communicate.

TCP - Transmission Control Protocol. A method of network communication. Its basically like sending a letter and getting a message that the letter was delivered.

UDP - User Datagram Protocol. AKA Unreliable Datagram Protocol. As noted above, UDP is a method of network communication, but it does not sent back messages of delivery. It has low overhead making it ideal for things like stremaing video quickly.

If this sounds like gibberish to you, then running a server is not for you. Get a server host instead.

From what I hear hamachi isn't safe. It basically makes your lan public (afaik)

No it doesn't. Using a VPN service like Hamachi (Or Evolve, which is better) is arguably safer than port forwarding. It is just not "better" because port forwarding doesn't have any software overhead and is more scalable for larger applications (Beyond something trivial like a minecraft server)

    1. Portforward your port.

    2. Go to whatismyipadress.com

    3. There is your public ip

    4. Turn off your firewall

    This should work.

No no no no no no. Please never ever ever give advice like this ever again. You are just setting people up for attacks.

Try using Grappl. It worked for me and my friend, doesn't require admin access (or router access) and was pretty easy to set up. Even works for lan games (just make sure to put in the right port).

That is a crappy proxy service. Incomming connections are at the mercy of who/whatever/wherever the proxy server is. I STRONGLY advise against it.

Is the server running when you test? It won't show as open unless something is actively using the port.

Your internet bandwidth is not really the issue here. The more pressing issue is just physical distance.

Technically speaking for his copyright to have any ground, he would of had to file it in the U.S. Government (Assuming he is from the U.S.). If it just says I have copyright on this with no paperwork to prove it you have free reign to continue his work. I believe someone mentioned this, but since a resource pack is apart of something else A.K.A. Minecraft and not it's own separate entity a copyright for it might not be valid at all.

Incorrect. Please read about intellectual property to avoid giving misinformation.

Resource packs, while intended for Minecraft, have nothing tied to minecraft. Somone could make a game that uses the exact same structure as Minecraft assets, thus making a resource pack cross-compatible. Plus, EULA claims of ownership of content such as resource packs would not likely stand up in court, albeit no one has ever tested it.

Filing for a copyright mostly just increases your legal protection and gives you a stronger claim to that copyright vs a basic intellectual property claim. IE: Hypothetically, if 2 people come up with the same thing, but only one gets an official copyright to it, they would win out in court if it was ever contested regardless of whoever "Thought of it first".

Technically speaking, even fan art is illegal, but almost no company would be stupid enough to go after their customers for it. That would hurt their public image, or they would have nothing to gain from doing so.

if he had no copyright on it u can legally do anything u want with it. although it would be nice if u just gave him credit.

    Intellectual property rights.

    @OP:

You have zero legal grounds to do anything with his pack outside of use it in the game. Many would say "as long as you give credit", but that is still illegal.

The likelyhood of him returning and pressing legal action against you is slim to none, however the principal remains, it would be completely illegal for you to continue and distribute his pack in any form, and just overall a crappy move on your part to even try.

You CAN make new textures (all made 100% by you, no using his as base textures) and suggest people download his pack and set it to load before yours so that your textures over-wright his, but that is it.

Rule of thumb: Unless permission is explicitly granted, you do NOT have permission. Never assume permission. "Giving credit" does NOT make it ok.

    Quote from savenite»

Hi guys, I just want to ask, if you can help me out... Im runnig a home MC server (just for me and few frends) and when I tried to play just by myself, there were horrible lags (like when you cut the tree and it wont dissapear and you do this again and again and after few moments its finally done -.- ). Here´s the thing... I have good internet connection and enough of memory. What else could do these problems?

    Server info:

    CPU: Intel Pentium G3258

    MB: MSI H81M-E33

    RAM: 8GB (type DDR3)

    GUI: integrated

Its running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (64-bit OS)

    Internet info:

    PING: 12ms

    Download: 94,95 Mbps

    Upload: 90,86 Mbps

Thx a lot for help :)

Im assuming the computer is dedicated.

Check background processes. The CPU is meh, so it could be getting bogged down by random crap.
