How is the testing going, MegaTrain? I would like to try out the version for 1.10, but when I tried the link for the download from MediaFire, it still appears to be the old version uploaded in 2014.

I loved your YouTube "let's play" for your original End of Skyblock. Will you be making a few videos to show off the updates?

This challenge needs a time limit. For how much time would be be the limit? Maybe someone should set a timer to see how much has gone by wile you play. Perhaps 2 hours would be fine?

Good point. While iron is pretty easy to get (so you could get through the Iron Man Challenge at one go), gold is a lot harder to come by.

To complete the whole list, it could take long enough to become a Let's Play series--just kidding. I suppose it would be up to the friends you are racing against, but definitely one hour wouldn't net anything interesting. Maybe you could assign points to each item: easy-to-make items are low points, multi-step items are more. Then while one person might grind away at mining to earn points for lots of easy items, another person might work to go to the nether to get brewing started and aim for a potion of healing. Friends with different play styles could still enjoy this challenge together.

    Quote from Grave

A little trick that I don't think anyone on the planet besides my brother and I know is that you can make an x-ray 'machine' (w/o mods or texture packs) in as little as maybe 2 minutes in survival. You need to smelt 2 iron, get 6 sticks and make the 2 fences with said sticks. With those 2 iron, go up to a tree and get 2+ leaf blocks. Turn on fast graphics or fast trees graphics (if optifine), go down into a stairway tunnel and then open an area that is 2 blocks high, 1 block wide and 2 blocks long. Make sure to block up the area that leads upwards, and have the longer bit facing a direction you'd wish to 'x-ray' to see dungeons, caves, etc. Place two fences in the opposite direction you want to look, then place the leaves against the bottom fence, and then the top. To remove it, use shears on the leaves (just click and it'll break the block at your head) and take the fences. Leaves do not cause you to suffocate, like glowstone, TNT, and redstone blocks, but are infinitely easier to get.

    ...

Place a torch at head level when underwater to regain breath and never really need a water-breathing potion or helmet of respiration. The downside is that you need a two-block high structure to place on. A good idea would be to use dirt or similar blocks that are easy/fast to break.

    ...

To expand on farms.. You can put a cobble/whatever block pillar above a central water block in a big, 9x9 field and put torches on all 4 sides to get nearly perfect lighting on all crops. Separate each 9x9 by 1 block, and put 1 torch inbetween all the farms at the corners. You get a very uniform look, large production (though, not the best farm ever), and you will never lose items in water or have to worry about lighting. Another option is to just stick a piece of glowstone in the center on top of 2 stone slabs and a stone slab on top of that. That's my favorite aesthetic version of it.

Great xray tip! I'll try it tomorrow after work. I had tried the one where you place a minecart, place a leaf block above it, and sit in the minecart. Works ok, but you can't see down past the cart. Your method sounds better. Thanks also for the tip on fast graphics for this; I accidentally was on fancy graphics last time, and was wondering why the leaves weren't transparent anymore! I thought Mojang had changed something. Doh!

Another underwater tip is to bring an empty bucket. When you need a breath, just right click. The bucket gets filled and you get a breath. Then look down at the ground and right click again. Placing the water source at your feet empties the bucket, and its ready to use again. And no other blocks have to be placed.

And thank you again for the other great tip about using the space above the farm's water block to make a light pillar. I had always put a lilypad on the water. Great tips!

I can relate, especially when I spawn near an NPC village or a temple with easy diamond. Most people naturally want a game to last as long as possible, so if you find high tier minerals earlier on it can feel like cheating, subconsciously. I'd never discard diamond for that, though. If you find some, cherish it before the creepers do :P

If it's a desert temple, make sure you at least go in and destroy that pressure plate over the TNT! One time I saw a temple, and decided to wait until later to go in and check out the loot. By the time I got around to it, some mob had spawned in the darkness of the "treasure room", walked on the pressure plate, and blew up the treasure. So disappointing...

Don't know if the OP is still updating his list, but I like the Iron Man challenge: 31 items have iron in them! Quite a list, and set up as a speed challenge, no less.

So how about a Goldfinger Challenge? Obtain every single gold-based item in the game in as short a time as possible? 22 items on this list, AFAIK:

gold ore, ingot, nugget, & block
gold sword, pick, shovel, hatchet, & hoe
gold helmet, chestplate, legs, & boots
golden apple, enchanted golden apple, golden carrot, glistering melon
potion of healing (uses glistering melon, does that count?)
clock, gold pressure plate, powered rails, star-shaped firework

    Am I missing anything?

posted a message on How do you protect villagers?
I tend to play on hard, so I need to protect the doors from zombies. I first run through all the houses and light them up so no mobs spawn inside them. Then when night falls, and the villagers have gone into the houses, I run around and put dirt blocks in front of each door. This way the zombies just stand outside, looking up at the villagers inside, and are easy targets for me or for the sun in the morning.

When I have fenced and lit the village area, and added enough doors (silo-method, if you know what I mean) to spawn an iron golem, then I can remove the dirt blocks from the doors. (Though the villagers with the best trades are usually secured into corners of the houses so I can find them easily.)

I love the ocelot and wolf traps! It's painstakingly slow trying to edge up to an ocelot without it running off.

My kids got me started on Minecraft. One morning, before driving them to school, they were giving me pointers as I was playing in my very first survival world.

So, on the road to school, I noticed a large tree by the side. Instantly the thought jumped into my head, "Great! Wood! I'll collect it on my way back." Couldn't believe I actually thought I could just chop down someone else's tree like that.

I'm not where I can get on Minecraft, so I'm trying to envision how you get the chicks coming downstream *under* a half slab, to enter a room *on* a half slab floor, with lava right over it. How did you design the transition so they don't run into the lava too soon?

    @SalmonMax

Well said. In my early days of Minecraft, pushing a button to get already broken sugarcane to just walk by and pick up really would have been my idea of 'automatic'. And playing in survival mode, that is definitely the most accessible kind of automation early in game--until you have chests *full* of every kind of block, just waiting to be blown on a big project.

Off topic: is your name a play on the LucasArts game "Sam 'n Max Hit the Road"?

And then there are the temples that spawn a mob down in the darkness of the loot area while you are approaching. By the time you get there, you find the loot has been blown to bits. :( Stupid pressure plate.

posted a message on The average of difficulties in survival mode
I graduated to hard a while back. Learned the valuable lesson to use fence gates instead of wood doors in the early game due to zombies breaking into my house while I'm down in the mines. Very annoying, and they let creepers in to boot.

I remember one person mentioning on the forums a variation he created: instead of hardcore, he would play on hard, but if he died then he would teleport himself to some random coordinates and start over. He would have the fun of eventually running into the evidences of his previous 'lives'. He wouldn't suffer the disappointment of world deletion, but he did play much more carefully!
