Re: lighting issues. Turn up the lighting in settings. I rarely use lighting 'cause I turned up the lighting by 60 per cent or so. All darkness is avoided when I play this way!
I tend to spend some time building then I go mining, then spend time fighting mobs. I keep changing what i do, in between I might build something different like multi-coloured cubes etc. Keep changing what you do, go to the nether, build a bridge, visit a village.....
Have a look online for building ideas, use different materials to build. even join a pvp site, see what they have built and replicate that, smaller of course. There's loads of ideas out there!
Some nice worlds out there. Thought I would add some pics of mine. Been in my world for 4 or so months now although I started building in it before that using a free entry point. Built and changed many times but relatively happy with it as it is now.
Lots of coloured sheep and some long bridges across valleys, for no real reason apart from the fact I cannot build these in the real world. Even deconstructed part of a nearby village that died and rebuilt next to my base.
Quick update! Managed to get home after finding a flint & steel in an already looted fortress. Left it there when i originally looted it as didn't need it at the time. Thak god for that!
Repaired portal area after getting home, left a chest with alsorts in just incase.
I just created a new portal in my home location. It is opposite my existing portal. I hoped it would give me a new nether location so I could explore more. It did not, I entered the nether through my existing portal via my new one! Annoying....
Do what you gotta do! My world is in survival but I do not have cheats so have to switch modes from peaceful to hard. Sometimes when mining I like to go to peaceful so I can just mine and not worry what is behind me. Do what is right for you at the time. As others have said, if it is just you playing then it matters not what others think. Do only what is right for you!!
It is scary when you cannot even trust a known friend in the artificial world. I dumped friends years ago when they crossed me. Got a good family base and good friends in the real world, never invite real world friends to my artificial world. would rather keep a controlled part of my life to myself!!!
I am on the latest version and yes I believe the endermen did step into water or at least very near it. What I do not understand is that after they left the we area they no longer attacked despite my staring at them from only a few blocks away and then when I attacked they just took it until they died. Very strange....
Good news! Managed to find a flint & steel in one of the fortresses I already looted so returned home. Back to the nether for repairs and to prevent further ghast blasts, lighting around the portal and a chest of readies just in case.

I do remember seeing a skeleton as I entered the nether so most likely do have a lighting issue by my portal. Will sort that upon my return after I find another fortress for the iron!
Thanks all. My portal is in a basement and it is lit pretty well but may need to check that. As for flint and steel, I will have a look in the nearby Fortresses although I have raided them before. Not sure I want to enable normal mode to encourage ghast shots as I don't have a shield and the mobs in the nether are pretty scary!
I get them all the time. I am lit up and have only a deserted village on my island with no beds. Pillagers are always roaming by me and hanging about. I find them easy to kill as they tend to mess about in the sea while I shoot at them. I have found them in my setup mooching with the sheep. They do not tend to shoot back while the slaughter ensues so tend not to bother me.
Just stay away and shoot them from a distance and they will just watch you as you kill?!!!!
I was playing in normal survival the other night and antagonising endermen which I find to be fun. Whilst killing them from my 2 block high protection I noticed that once they had fell into a creeper hole near water, they stopped attacking no matter what i did to encourage an attack (looking at them and hitting them from 2 blocks away). I was able to go out and continue hitting until they died.
Single player is my mode as I can make my world as I want without anybody changing it. No other inputs and only what I want in my world.
I do play other servers with pvp etc but always come back to my world to battle mobs. Love twotting creepers and letting them blow to see what hole they leave. Got some great craters in my lower battle area lol!
