Chapter 37: In Which Two Truly Shocking Events Occur Simultaneously
Exploration limit: X = -28,000
So I head ashore - partly to see what it looks like, and partly to experience stopping to see what something looks like, because if I carry through on my goal I'm going to be doing this a LOT.
Highlands is one of my fave biomes in RTG
I love the rock outcroppings, sweeping vistas, and coldish looking flora. It really does feel like a Highlands. The Highlands version of Highlands is even bolder than this BoP version (in keeping with the choices of the respective mods) but that's not currently available in the 1.10.2 version.
On the edge I find some Lemon trees. Lemon would be nice, but I don't have a reason to hang out long enough for them to ripen. Unlike the 1.7 versions of Harvestcraft, it doesn't seem possible to harvest unripe fruit by permanently destroying it - which makes sense, honestly.
Moar Flower Forest? I'm seeing a lot of unusual biomes lately.
The Flower Forest has some Avocados, which normally would be the same story as the Lemons. But there's something different here:
A village. That could be worth hanging around for a while as the avocados ripen.
But as I walk up to the village, the most SHOCKINGLY IMPOSSIBLE thing happens
It starts to rain.
IN THE MORNING.
In (check pic) 167 game-days of play this is the *first* time *ever* it's started raining before noon. Before 1:30 in the afternoon IIRC but I'm not absolutely sure about the exact timing.
Oh and the second SHOCKING thing?
It's a thunderstorm and I'm getting spawns. (Yes, I know, cheap pun, so very funny, haha ha ha). The villagers are just amazingly unconcerned and so I prowl about trying to keep them safe, with success.
After a while, although the rain continues, the spawns stop. Maybe it de-thunderstormed. I wander about harvesting resources and improving house security (doors, step-ups, and lighting). I check out some nearby biomes, finding a Woodlands (yay!) and a Dead Swamp (yuck!). I sleep the night in the village.
The next morning I head over to the avocados and discover only one has ripened. Well, I don't want them THAT much so I'll just head on.
I decide to more-or-less circle the Highlands and get back on the boat.
I explore a Meadow, and don't explore the Overgrown Cliffs in the distance.
I cross the Ice Plains I saw next to the Highlands and return to the boat.
The continent has been forcing me to the north, but almost immediately I round a cape and get to head due west.
It turns out to be a fake, though, because it's actually some kind of lake and soon I reach its shore and have to turn back around and go back to the cape. In reality the continent continues to force me north past a variety of biomes I mostly don't explore. The only exception is some interesting-looking trees in a Frost Forest which I look at and turn out to be - Durrian? (a tropical fruit for those that don't know).
Finally, having travelling 3000 blocks to the north, I reach what turns out to be a *real* cape and can continue into the ocean to the west. I stop and make a backup before continuing.
Which turns out to be a good thing because THIS time after traveling only about 1000 blocks, the generation hangs (without any crash message). I quit the game and return - to find myself floating in the ocean, with the boat missing. Great. Well, that's what backups are for, and lucky I had such a short rollback. I've got to get the consistency up though.
Back at the cape I re-head west, and take another ocean crossing that's shorter than I would expect with my extreme oceanic settings - 16,000 blocks, taking me to - 45,000 x.
It's nightime so I stop my boat to sleep and -
Crash. Again.
The crash messages this time (and several of the other recent crashes) implicate tile entities on the boat (chests and the furnace). I restart the game and I'm in the water, but the boat is still there so I don't have to roll back again. I snooze and in the morning set off
And the boat's stuck.
OK, I had these great visions of a cool-looking boat I was going to name the Dusk Treader (loved the Dawn Treader as a kid; hate the idea of copyright notices from the Lewis estate) but I have just had it. I clear my pots and pans from the chests (the only things I had in my storage so far) and stuff them in my backpack. Then I take my Efficiency III Mending axe and chop the boat to bits, collecting what I can but mostly letting the structure go because it's just basic wood stuff.
And go away, you pest.
Then I head to shore and construct what's basically a little jet ski. This is so NOT the right look for a boat to travel
TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
(where did that voice come from?) but dangit, this has to WORK. This boat I can just chop to bits each time rather than sweating about it getting stuck. Not sure if it will help with the crashes (since there are no tile entities on this boat) but I'll think about a solution to that later if I need to.
And as I finish it I hear more groans coming up but I just start up the boat and leave. Buzz off buster, whatever you are (I didn't even bother to look).
This continent also bars my motion west. This time I head south to look for an around.
I stop off to take a look at a Heathlands biome, another I really like. I like the sparse, sweeping vista biomes the best, I guess.
I come to a bay with this attractive Ice Mountains and realize - hey, I can just chop the jetski, walk across the continent, and rebuild it on the other side. So I do.
To discover that here, the continent is only about 200 blocks across (it was bigger at the Heathlands - I couldn't see the other side from there).
So I rebuild the jetski and head off.
I guess I can call the new boat the Duski (get it? Dusk + Ski? haha ha ha OK fine let's continue.)
I plow on to the west and now I encounter a new technical problem.
Laggy generation. I hadn't had trouble with this in my tests. There have been some changes to both RTG and GC that *could* cause some trouble, but I wouldn't really expect it. With some trepidation, I stop the game to turn off the Geographicraft chunk wall prevention and turn the view distance down to 10, but that doesn't help, at least not much.

I'd wanted to experience a deep ocean crossing and this time I'm getting it. I travel as far as the entire distance I'd travelled - during which I'd hit three landmasses - without hitting anything. This is a little onerous, especially since I don't want to quit in view of all the crashes I've been having (maybe they'll be better with the jetski, I mean the Duski, but I haven't yet tested it).
Nobody but these guys for company. There are still a lot, but not quite as many temples as before. They don't seem able to hit the smaller boat, though - I haven't been hit once yet while I got hit at least 3 times in a comparable distance earlier.
The generation problem seems to be worsening, although I can actually head into the ungenerated chunks without troubles so far. For a while I slow for them but eventually I just keep going, planning to stop only if generation completely hangs up, which it never does.
I spend a lot of time looking at the celestials in the late nigh and late afternoon.

The generation problems just keep getting worse. My plan is not going to work if this continues degrading, for whatever reason. My initial guess is disk access, because what's just dandy with a 25 MB file can be a problem with a 1.5 GB file, but it's just a guess.
Quite appropriately, I'm listening to some spacey new age music during this.

OMG, finally! My initial estimate of 60,000 blocks per hour has turned out to be optimistic. I'm actually making about 45,000. This has been a two-hour trip - phew even for me, although I did have a commute sometimes that long for a while (recommendation - avoid!)
There's some nice scenery. I think I'll do a more formal exploration of this landmass, just to see how it works. My initial idea was to explore every landmass I hit, but I don't think that's practical now. There's also the issue of how to map - regular maps, don't map, or AMIDST. I'm leaning to regular maps, but I'll need a serious cane farm to support that.
Next episode: back home for a break.

SurviveMinecraft posted a message on SRV DNS Records + ServerFirst of all, huge props to Bacon Avenger for his description on http://www.minecraft...e-same-machine/ as it helped me troubleshoot my issue.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
Simply put, my SRV Record was for _minecraft._tcp and it should have been _minecraft._tcp.game
So, to summarize (hoping this will help somebody someday):
I have two servers (one on default and one on 25570) and I wanted to map game.surviveminecraft.com to 25570.
Steps
1) Register www.surviveminecraft.com with somebody
2) Setup an "A record" pointing game.surviveminecraft.com to the external IP of my minecraft server
3) Setup a "SRV record" binding _minecraft._tcp to game.surviveminecraft.com at port 25570.
Wrong way:
_minecraft._tcp.surviveminecraft.com. 3600 IN SRV 0 5 25570 game.surviveminecraft.com.
Right way
_minecraft._tcp.game.surviveminecraft.com. 3600 IN SRV 0 5 25570 game.surviveminecraft.com.
Dreamhost automatically did the "3600" portion of the above so that's the only one I'm not 100% sure on. Otherwise, I flushed the DNS cached, waited about 30 min and my boy and his buddies are now using game.surviveminecraft.com to play while my other boys are using a different address to play on their own server - both of which are hosted on one machine. I am adding this mod to my modpack.
Thanks for visiting my channel, Paul, and reminding me that I forgot to add this mod!
And, of course, thanks for your hard work bringing high quality mods to 1.9!
