Honestly, the fact that they said that really just makes it worse. This is NOT a bug free release.... not even close. Honestly, I cant remember the last one that was THIS bad. Major bugs have been presented to them. They simply havent DONE anything about them. Mojira, as usual, is CHOKED with the things. And many of them can be easily found by the player simply going through the game a bit.
Hell, I cant even play the damn game at the moment, unless I want to play it with my chunk-loading distance cut in half for no apparent reason, a glitch that persisted through EVERY one of the 1.7 snapshots. Tolerated that as long as I could, but my patience with it finally broke And likely, that bug is NOT going away any time soon, as Mojang is usually really bad at bug squashing. Always have been. And yeah, that one's on Mojira too, and mentioned in a couple of topics on the forums here. Gonna have to wait for Optifine to be available to fix that one, because derp.
They SERIOUSLY need to spend a couple of months NOT CREATING NEW CONTENT, like, AT ALL, and JUST fixing bugs. It's the only way that the number of bugs is ever going to REALLY get lowered. Particularly considering that they're a small developer.

Oceans were massive and empty and people rightly pointed out that too many large empty oceans was a bit of a drag,
The correct step at that point would have been to simply increase the variety of possible ocean sizes, pehaps having the larger oceans less likely to occur, but still possible.
Then we would have had worlds with the maximum possible variety (the most important thing to have - it keeps things unpredicatable and interesting) and everyone would have been happy, because they're not constantly having to deal with huge expanses of ocean.
But no! As always Mohjang have to take things from one extreme to another, with seemingly no understanding that a middle ground is possible. Their display of poor judgement, release after release is starting to sadden me. They're just rubbish at the game design part.

What if I want the possibility of every thing you mentioned (continuous land with lakes, continents with small oceans, vast oceans with large islands, combined with large biomes/regular-sized biomes/small biomes) all in one world? Can't I have that?
Why is it thought that people would have a preference for just one world form? Such a world would effectively be uniform and thus monotonous.
Sure have options for different types of homogeneous world for those wanting a particular theme, but allow the normal world generation to feed off of all of the other generation types and have the chance to utilise any and all of them in a single world.

Variety is what's important. Not variety as in the number of different biomes available, but variety in the forms those biomes take in terms of size, elevation variation and land forms.
That's what keeps peoples interest, never knowing quite what you'll find when you explore.
As it stands, all these new biomes are great, but eventually we might well get back to the state we're in now where we've seen it all and any particular biome is just like every other occurence of that biome type.
What we need is a moderate amount of that amplified terrain occasionaly cropping up in a normal world in any biome.
That would make exploring worthwhile.

I am a programmer myself and I agree that the Mojang team do a good programming job for the most part (realistically there will always be a few bugs and niggles with this sort of project).
As EyeOfTheDaev points out though, there can be a difference between a program that technically works and one that is designed well to meet its purpose.
In the case of a game, the program's purpose is to provide an enjoyable playing experience.
A game with too many technical bugs (graphical glitches, erratic controls, general instability, etc.) will be very hard pressed to provide an enjoyable playing experience. However it is very possible to produce a game with no bugs at all and it still provide a lousy play experience.
That's the difference between a well-designed game and a poorly designed game and I think we can agree that there are a lot of poorly designed games out there.
It appears to me that Mojang need someone with a good grasp of what makes good game play to help them introduce intelligent and fun new features. There is massive potential in Minecraft to build on what is there and offer even more amazing playing experiences in the future, but as good as I think Minecraft has been in the past, it is not a given that it will be any good in the future. Especially if too many barriers to usability are introduced because of poor design decisions.
I suspect that there is also a short fall in project management and planning as well.
New features should be designed and then tested for lasting play value and compatibility and coherence with existing features, in house, BEFORE being thrown into the snapshots for bug detection and correction.
It is quite clear that some recent features have been added on the fly without enough forethought and the following snapshots are then being used to try to wrestle them into shape, whether they are worthy of final inclusion or not.
If something is obviously a bit iffy then they shouldn’t be afraid to ditch it for the time being, but if they’d do a bit more offline design, prototyping and play testing, then they wouldn’t have to air their dirty washing in public in the first place.
Measure twice and cut once is generally the best policy for good long term system design and development.
I might be prone to expressing myself in a somewhat vitriolic manner, but I still believe my point is a valid one.

I'm getting properly scared for Minecraft now. It feels like it's steadily being trashed bit by bit.
I'm sure some good features are being planned, but it'll be a waste of time if it comes accompanied by more of this ill thought out nonsense.
If I see even just one of these recently introduced and rather poor game mechanics being reversed out, then I'll have faith that someone knows what they're doing. But if Mojang stubbornly ignore the fact that they've slipped up, then the writing is truly on the wall.

You'd then have to keep a track of the days and make sure you didn't get caught outside in a cave on those nights.
That would add a touch of strategy and excitement when you find you've lost track of the days and tonight's the night.
Instead we just get a cheap mechanic, that looks and plays poorly, with little internal logic, is annoying because it interferes with other game play (crafting) and is simply no fun in the long run.
A Zombie horde would be fun every now and then, if it appeared and behaved consistently and in a way the player could work with in an entertaining way. But not like this.
The current way Mojang are trying to increase difficultly is IMHO rather poor. They are upsetting tried and tested gameplay, instead of adding intelligent new features. It’s just not subtle enough. And more importantly not FUN enough. Yes add more challenge please, but not at the expense of balance and usability.
The change to the boat controls is another face plant. What exactly was wrong with the old ones? They functioned perfectly. Not exactly like a real boat, but just right for the needs of this game. Now to slow a boat down you have to look away from where you are going for goodness sake. Which genius thought that crap up?
Someone needs to get Mojang to measure twice and cut once when it comes to game design decisions, because at the moment it seems they are doing stuff because they can rather than because they should.
Basically I think they need to seek the advice of a professional game designer every now and then, rather than just use the (skilled) coders they have now.

What they do care about is infantile behaviour that is spoiling people’s enjoyment of various forums, multiplayer environments and other web spaces to which the public can contribute.
Regretfully, hell is other people and the only way to maintain a quality environment is to either restrict access to those that can demonstrate that they can behave responsibly (e.g. white lists), or to only frequent environments that do not attract the immature amongst us in the first place.
Children are typically the ones who perpetrate childish behaviour and that is the reason that children are often excluded from environments that require a degree of maturity, such as behind the wheel of a car, in a bar, or at a polling booth, etc.
Now I’m not saying that children are exclusively the culprits here, people of any age can exhibit immaturity. But if we cannot collectively exercise a reasonable level of discipline, then we run the risk of all being treated like children and having our access unnecessarily curtailed.
I don’t think closing sections of the internet off to only a select few is necessarily want anyone wants. We’d lose diversity in our discussions.
Forums like this one are policed of course, to try to maintain an acceptable level of behaviour, but often that type of policing either does not go far enough to prevent every issue, or goes too far and becomes so draconian that it impinges on the liberties of those that have no intention of causing trouble.
Wherever there is freedom of access to anyone, sadly all we can really do in the majority of cases, when we see that a place is becoming dominated and ruined by the immature, is to boycott that place and move on to somewhere with a better class of people. And that’s a shame.
So if you are one of those people exhibiting the behaviour that is getting people's backs up (as described by numerous people in this thread alone), then you might want to reconsider your behaviour. It might seem like great fun to you, but the civilised adult world could never function if everyone had selfish attitudes that always put the things they wanted above the needs of the general populace.
You wouldn't use baby words when speaking to your boss or teacher because you know that it is not an effective way to communicate and would not be productive, so don't use them anywhere else where you can see that it is inappropriate or might upset people.
On the playground please run around screaming 'BUDDA' with likeminded folk as much as you want. Have fun! Just don't bring it to a place where other people are trying to have an intelligent discussion, unless they are okay with it.

They did add to the thread with the only response needed. The original poster's question beggers belief to be honest. It's probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard on these forums. How something this simple has gone over their head I'm not sure.
Yes it might well yet have other uses or apppear naturally as well (although Mojang struggles with joined up game design at times), but the point of hardened clay and most other blocks is to provide a variation in building materials to make structures look more interesting and aesthetically pleasing.
