posted a message on I'm pretty annoyed with SMP in general.
Yeah this is another whine thread, but I'm throwing it out there just in hopes to maybe find a server that suits my play style.

List of 7 things that annoy me in SMP:

#1 lag, can't deal with this, there will be some lag spikes, its understandable, but people hosting servers on crappy machines with wifi just doesn't work. Most people that host servers don't do it with the proper setup, its a fact.

#2 Mobs, when combined with #1, basically makes the game completely unplayable, and this always go hand in hand with #1 from what I have seen.

#3 PVP, just no use for it in this game, its not complex enough to keep me interested, and usually just ends up as a griefer fest, by who can annoy the other player the most by repeatedly killing them while they are trying to do anything else in the game.

#4 people feel entitled to everyone's buildings, like if you build something cool some people think its for everyone, or that you have to share it. Other people going down in my mineshaft stripping all the resources out etc, when I'm offline, or sometimes even when I'm online. I have even seen cases of other people taking pictures of some of my stuff and then taking credit for building it, saying it was a "group effort".

#5 Servers that aren't free build or limit you to building in their city or etc. The worst cases they only let you build within the city, and then you also gotta follow their building style. Many times they lure people in and the rules like this aren't even advertised.

#6 Servers with few protections at all, they are basically asking to be griefed. With proper server security, it almost makes griefing impossible for random people. Which is why I don't put griefers on the list.

#7 Servers that make you register on a website to get White listed. Why should I go through the time to register, if I don't even know if I'm gonna like your server or not? And every server I had to login on a website to get White listed, never stayed for more than about 10 minutes.

Now with that said, it really doesn't leave me with too many options now does it? Just my opinion, but I like minecraft, but the player base in general sucks for this game, not just because I can't find a server, but just from interacting with random people in general in this game. Now I'm 24 so I'm a bit more mature than most teenagers, which could be another problem. Seems like most of the player base is 16-20 yrs old. Its kinda ironic how its called Mine"craft" because the community here reminds me an awful lot of the WoW community.

posted a message on Trying to modify a texture pack. Failed.
I like this texture pack here:

    viewtopic.php?f=1021&t=160476&p=2753985

That is, everything except for the wool. I really hate the wool design so I tried to use paint to copy/paste from another texture pack and edit the terrain.jpg. I did a clean job on it, zoomed in to x800 and could see no miss match on the texture. So I saved the edited version, then moved it back in the zip folder. I patch it. The wool edited just fine, but it caused a glitch in some of the other textures like the torch, glass, plants, redstone wire, etc, basically anything that had black filled in, the black would show up on these particular textures in the game. I didn't edit these in any way. I didn't think it would be more complicated than doing the above. Is there any way to modify a texture pack without getting glitches?

The wool I copied over was from the texture pack Dark art craft, both of the texture packs were 128x128, so there shouldn't have been a conflict there.

posted a message on Weird bug with ladders.
This only happened with the last update.

Here is the situation, ok I made a ship and tried to put a ladder going down into the hold, using wood plank, but either one of 2 things happens, either the ladders go invisible, or they break off as soon as I put them on there. They break off if I put one ladder directly above another, but if I place a single one it only goes invisible. And also if I try to climb the invisible ladders, I get put in a lag loop and have to /home to get out. So its basically screwed.

posted a message on My suggestions on polishing the combat system, etc.
Now I like the random world, open ended lego builder aspect to this game. But I feel like the mobs and combat system need a big overhaul. It is a little bit too crude for me to have any fun in. Its why I don't like most SMP servers, because 95% of them got mobs turned on. So my choice for servers to play on is very, very limited. I know I am in the minority who feels this way, but it is what it is, and my opinion wont change, unless someone steps in and fixes the combat/mobs for the better. Because as it is, its just ridiculous.

First of all, I don't feel like weapons should be using the same mechanics to target and stuff as tools do, it just doesn't make any sense, and seems a bit lazy on Notch's part to make it that way. I have frequently swung at enemies (single player) and it wouldn't even damage them, it would swing through them, because the cursor was targeting a block behind the enemy, the fact that the swing went right through the enemy didn't matter. Also the bow in this game is more like a Sub Machine Gun, the fire rate is ridiculous. This is a really cheaply made combat system, and don't feel like its good enough for anything competitive like PVP, and my only guess is people who do pvp, do it because its just dumb fun. Sorry, but I'm not that easily amused.

Also I would start off by completely scrapping all of the Mob AIs in the game, and rebuilding them, and give enemies a variety of attacks to use to make it a little more complex. Spiders possibly being able to spew web at you or something, Zombies can poison you, include a few status effects, etc. And creepers should be programmed to blow up when they are low on health, instead of instant suicide bomber, and rely on a different attack until they reach that point. Also since bows shouldn't fire like SMGs, that means skeletons shouldn't either, and I would be for giving skeletons a variety of weapons, you would see some with bows, some with swords/shields, etc.

How I would change the combat system, is change the mechanics for the swords and bows, and put in something like an attack bar that charges up, with a full bar you do full damage, and if you just hold the mouse button you can still spam attack, but you do minimum damage. A full bar attack should be much stronger than a spam attack, that way instead of just spam spam, you can place a well aimed swing, that has a hit box instead of targeting the block the enemy is sitting on, and if you swing through the enemy sprite, you are guaranteed to get a hit in. Bows should follow the same rule, with a full power bar you do more damage, and shoot farther. Also I noticed its possible for swords to have a little bit too much range, because after all they got the same range as tools, which is 3 blocks. That is too much, and I would shorten that. And I don't see any reason for you to take damage just for bumping into an enemy, they should have to get an attack off on you before you take damage.

There is an old school game I played for the PS1 called King's field and also King's Field 2. It was a first person RPG, you know swords, axes, bows, magics. And that was where I got the idea for how I think the minecraft combat system should be changed to. Now King's field's combat system wasn't perfect, but its leaps and bounds beyond what minecraft has. If anyone has played this game, you know what I mean. If someone could merge minecraft and King's Field, I think they would have a winner.

I assume it would take a WHOLE lot of time and work to make a mod that does the above, but people have done similar kinda mods for games more complicated than Minecraft, like TES oblivion, there are several mods that change the combat system. And its likely Notch wouldn't pick up my ideas, since he already put a lot of work in the current system, and has made about 10+ million off the game already. Now it could leave room for someone to step in and make another spin off game of this type. So if Notch don't make some good changes, then I hope someone will. And Minecraft isn't exactly an original idea either from what I heard. And someone made a spinoff called "fortresscraft" that is going up on XBL. If someone made like a first person RPG with a decent combat system, and keep the random world, open ended ness, lego builder aspect to the game, I believe you could make a few million on the idea, and I am just throwing this out there. I am not a programmer or I would try to do it myself. You could even put something like a diablo spin on the game and have it randomly build large dungeons in the map you can find an infinite variety of random equipment in.

So what do you guys think about my suggestions about changing the combat system and other stuff?

I will continue to play on "peaceful" until they refine this instead of it just being a broken lawlfest.

The texture pack works other than one VERY BIG PROBLEM. All the text is messed up, menus and everything. Is there any way to fix the text? I tried uninstalling the mod and going back to default textures, now minecraft just instantly crashes after the mojang logo...... WTF?
