Note: I am currently updating my mod too and not confirmed this yet because I'm still changing code so I can actually run it.
I did some research and it finds the texture depending on what you put into .setUnlocalizedName("exmaple"). Eg.
itemExample = new Item(itemExampleID).setUnlocalizedName("example");
So this would look in "textures/item/" to find "example.png". Same goes for blocks, it looks in the blocks folder instead of items. Hope this helps

Atom is compatible with Forge whatsoever, but Forge won't recognize it. Since it is not made WITH forge.

Forge and ModLoader isn't compatible because Forge already contains ModLoader.
Just install Forge, don't install ModLoader. Trust me

There is a new texture path code.
.setUnlocalizedName("blahBlah");
That means the png file would be at
textures/item/blahBlah.png
The UnlocalizedName = The PNG name.
No need for ModLoader.addOverride png anymore

Forge has unlimited.
ModLoader doesn't.
Blocks = 256 index.
Items = 1000 index, if I remember correctly.
Forge is recommended. You can easily move your ModLoader mods to Forge.
Forge contains ModLoader.
ModLoader doesn't contain Forge.
Forge is like 2 in 1.
FML and ModLoader = Forge.
By the way, Forge usually updates the quickest.
The longest wait I ever had after a MC release from Forge was around 3 hours.
