Well, a very simple solution is that http://www.minecraft.../game/howtoplay gets updated (come on, the videos are from alpha and are missing lots of features), add some subtitles to the videos (not everybody is a fluent english speaker to understand an english voice) then optionally add a link to this page in the launcher.
So instead of fighting on if minecraft should have any form of tutorial or not, IMO is better to find some updated videos (i am sure that somebody has been made quality tutorials for newbies on youtube) and redact some text + some images to put in their official page. Then if reviewers/players don't bother into check the official "how to play" isn't a mojang/minecraft/player problem
Umm, guys, achievements are basic tutorials. Press E to open Inv. Craft a WB. Part of the game is getting small hints, then having to figure things out on your own. Most people would know that Esc is menu. Or P. But once they find out it's not P, they try different things. It encourages initiative learning.
No, the achievements doesn't tell at all on how to get them. Please, how anybody without searching youtube or going to the wiki (which some articles has spoilers on it) can learn on how to make the cake achievement for example? The game doesn't tell you the cake recipe, how to get the milk (sure you can think of cows but there aren't hints on how collect it), know that buckets exists and how to craft them, how to craft a hoe, etc. I even spent months without knowing that redstone repeaters exited and it was impossible to figure out the recipe of a piston without look on the wiki.
The tutorial doesn't need to be ingame at all. It can be some series of still images that can be accesed from the main menu giving hints on the mechanics of the game and some starting recipes. What about that after crafting a redstone torch it unlocks more tutorial images explaining a little about redstone and some recipes to build (like a repeater for example). And after getting your 1st obsidian block it will unlock a tutorial image that hints about the construction of a portal.
Seriously, the tutorials and references has always existed (even the NES cartridges came with printed brochures). They don't need to be retarded and hand-holding like those in Wii games but a total lack of these does nothing good to minecraft.
Ah, well on that. That problem should've been fixed by the time it's 1.9. Some people can run it smoothly, some with lags, and some can't.
Maybe the root of all this is the OpenGL 1.3 and/or ARB support, notch said that he fixed it so maybe i can play 1.8 tomorrow after "1.8.2"? lets hope so.
So what's the problem? It's Beta, I'm pretty sure that you would've expect bugs.
Bugs are expected but not those that affect playability, remember, this is a beta, not an alpha or pre-release. For me, i like the 1.8 update but sadly i can't play it since the framerate goes down to 3-5 fps while in 1.7.3 i got 30-35 fps. It gets worse for some Mac users, since they can't play 1.8 at all.
For now i am stuck in 1.7.3 until 1.9 gets released.
