O.K so some backstory. I made my SSP world into a private server for me and my friends.

    Here's my friend.

The bed incident by Pharaoh Matsimela, on Flickr
Here's the first "bed incident". It was totally spontaneous. I had been giving him a tour of my castle, and yeah...

The second time, I had that screenshot error.

    But the third time...
    It was planned.

The fact I'm weegee makes it creepier, and he's using Honeydew's skin...

So, yeah. We had a bit too much fun on my server :3. :wink.gif:

They have been working for quite some time (They'll be nearing a year soon, or they already have). They haven't asked ANYONE for donations. Yet the few hours it takes to update a MC mod, people want money. I don't see how that's right. I don't.

We've already been over this, no need to bring it up again. You're overestimating how much time they spend writing little LUA scripts and underestimating how much time modders spend writing mods. I doubt TWC modders have to hack into the game engine through the LUA interpreter- I wish we could say the same.

I'm not the one who dragged this up, I was done with it.

All you people twist my words too. Sheesh.
No, they're not making any money of their mod in ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM.

I hate Adfly, and that's that.

You try taking one game and making it into another. You obviously did not see THE GREAT WAR MOD. They have no easy way of adding new models in, heck they can't add new animations. Do you know how long it takes to add new models like new Artillery in? A long time. To get it to this stage?:

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=445813

They don't have the luxury of making new models, they have to recycle all the Napoleonic stuff, to make helmets that look good. THEY HAVE TO DESIGN THEIR OWN TOOLS TO DO HALF OF THIS STUFF!

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=392321

That's the update page. Next major update (V.5) isn't going to be out until the summer. THEY'RE WORKING THEIR BUTTS OFF FOR FREE.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=427998
That took forever to get in, AND WORKING.

They can't even add planes for crying out loud. Tanks are going to be hard to add, getting the speed right etc...

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=374704
All their models, which will take forever to place in game.

Have you ever tried modding NTW? Obviously not. I can barely add music to it, let alone make a new unit, or an entirely new game. I've been able to try doing more with Minecraft. Just started though, but finding it easier.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

Saying NTW is easier then MC is not right.

Really? Who are you to judge what someone else's time is worth. Some people do have the time and money to release their work for free, other don't. Just because someone else is modding for free doesn't mean that asking for money is wrong. If someone spends 30 minutes, or 30 days on their work, they can "charge" whatever they like. They deserve it for taking time out of their day to make something. I don't understand what the problem is with people wanting to make money off of their own work.

You need at least one screenshot.

    kk ill add a video

A screen shot, posted directly here...

I'll download if it looks cool enough. I'll need a screenshot. Just hit F2 ingame and you'll take one. Then use a photosharing site (Like Flickr) and upload it there. Then, in the share menu on the Photo you uploaded to Flickr, choose the size you want for that pic, then copy and paste the code here :smile.gif:.

I think the problem most people have with adfly is that it's such a slap in the face.

Advertising works best when it either isn't noticed except by people looking for it (Macca's billboards on side of road) or is blatantly attention grabbing (LONGER SEX? CALL 1800-CIALIS NOW!)

People have shown time and time again that the latter form is unwelcome on the internet. Popups, floating div ads, flashing banners. All of these have been reduced further and further back down to banner ads and buttons. There is currently a huge uproar about Youtube and the video advertisements they have instated (an old method, but one they're now playing with). These force you to wait 10-30 seconds before your video loads. I have yet to find a single person that prefers this to the small banner ad that gets included at the bottom of some, which with a single click can be removed.

Can you imagine what would happen if Google ditched all of their current advertising, and instead did the adfly style on each search result? They would be lynched, and likely shut down overnight while Microsoft Bing laughs itself to death.

These are honestly my thoughts exactly. I have to agree with everything. It's quite annoying having crappy download time, then having to wait additional time JUST to get to the download page. I hate those video ads too. :iapprove:

I was talking about the forums regulating the mods, they should never have done that.

Why not? If there, purely theoretically now, was a mod that was for the sole purpose of SMP griefing, why not remove it? Isn't it just harmful to the community?

I know that one should interfere as little as possible with modding, but when they turn into pure tools for spoiling others' fun something ought to be done :Skeleton:

It's like the government telling parents what their kids may or may not play with because something may be unfair to others who are not in the best financial situation to buy said toy.

You shouldn't be regulating ANY mods anyways. Its NOT your choice, and never was. IT should ALWAYS be up to the server owners. The minute you start telling modders what they can and can release, then you are no better than EA.

This. I was against the idea of regulating them from day one, and I was not happy they were...

So tell me: What's so horrible about allowing server admins to choose what client mods are allowed on their server?

Edit: To clarify, this thread is SOLELY about client side SMP mods that give players "unfair" advantages over those who doesn't use it (For example a quick-crafting mod doesn't give an unfair advantage, while a flyhack does)

Thus the argument about "I bought the game and can do whatever I want" doesn't apply (You are not entitled to use another persons server: They allow you to use it. That is why admins can whitelist and ban ppl at will)

    Quote from skiddyfisk »
I think it's OK. It's not "specifically for griefing", it just disables the check so they can use it on servers without the plugin to enable it. Which is not the same as 'servers that have disallowed it'. :tongue.gif:

X-ray might not be specifically for griefing, but pretty much all its uses gives the user an "unfair advantage"
For example, they can see all ores (This is not possible with texture pack BTW) and hidden chests (Real hidden, as in surrounded by blocks on all sides. I've gotten such chests looted en masse several times in SMP)

I was talking about the forums regulating the mods, they should never have done that.

O.K, I went to download a mod (One of my favorites), it takes me to Adfly, I go and get adblock, then go back. Wait five seconds, then it takes me to mediafire. I just wished they had posted the mediafire link instead of trying to make me jump through hoops. That's why I like how SDK makes Adfly optional.

How about we settle it with a simple 'you're both right, you're both wrong, arguing about it isn't going to do either of you any good other than give you headaches when the other person responds and clutter the thread with bickering'?

All I'm seeing as a relatively impartial (relatively, because I have my opinion, but I'm ignoring my opinion for the time being) bystander is this situation here.

Participants' ages notwithstanding, to the one who is obviously right, the one who is obviously wrong (but thinks himself right) obviously refuses to listen to your logic. The obvious choice would then be,

    A) Repeat your logic until he understands,
:cool.gif: Make fun, um, of the way he, like, speaks/types/communicates,
    C) Act condescending, you poor simpering fool,
    D) Repeat your logic until he understands,
    E) Accept that you cannot win an argument with a hat on a fencepost and move on with your life.

I'll give you a hint: the correct answer rhymes with 'Inspect hat through the knots Anne Armament whittled cats on the fencepost sans groove farm miss door light.'

But hey, if you plan on arguing, don't let me stop you.

For the record, my opinion: model making is pretty damn hard. So is writing code without a proper delineated structure that gets changed around every time an update happens. Arguing about which is harder is like debating whether writing a complete by-hand Japanese translation for Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time book series is easier than re-painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with a toothbrush. Some find one a little easier than the other.

I like E) myself. Just like I tried to do before being called a little girl. Fun Fun Fun.

What I meant was THEY CAN'T MAKE BRAND NEW MODELS OUT OF NOTHING. CAN'T. Those helmets and such were made by combining old models. The artillery was made using some process that I don't know much about. I'M TALKING ABOUT HELMETS. If you read the creators posts (not the OP ones, you have to do quite a lot of digging), but they say constantly how hard it is to: Make the models, render them, add them, re-render them with proper color. Here's one: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthre ... ost9436090

We have to do all that to, you know. And create everything from scratch while we're at it. I don't see how cut and paste work is more difficult. Why do we do that in kindergarten if it's so tough?

I try to stop this and take the high road and I get called a little girl, lovely.

And it isn't "Cut and paste work" as you put it.
