posted a message on The issue with the Minecraft Modding Community.
I realize I'll change little to no minds on the subject, but it must be said.

This is in direct regard to the recent discoveries of people impersonating mod creators and using adfly links on other website to distrubite mods.

I have posted this before, so bear with me. It's not spam, just a good message. At least in my eyes.

Quoting HussarlTW from the Total War Center Forums (He's a huge modder there), maybe he'll inspire some of you Minecraft modders to change your views and stop being so darn greedy.

"As I've proudly stated, I've never denied my help to anybody that asked for it and community has generously recognised that. Almost all modders use some of my work because I have worked on a vital element of the game. Some use my work even without asking for permission. But all of them feel something about it by mentioning that.

I believe that modding is -by its nature- an "open source", and modding work must be free for every body to use it as far as it is credited properly (btw, how you should had made your mod without PFM, EsfEditor, etc.?)."

Now a different one a post later.

"I never said anything personal to anybody of you, I am a modder and I always respect the other modders, because modding is above all, free spirit!"

Completely different from the modders here. And honestly, I've lost respect for most if not all big modders of Minecraft because of stuff like that.

He also doesn't mind if you don't ask for permission to integrate some of his stuff, just as long as credit is given fully for anything that isn't yours. If you don't he'll ask you to change it, simple as that. Not a trademark anywhere from him. Just generosity.

But the entire debacle here on MC Forums is that modders want money for thier mods. Thus some people got the idea that hey "What if I impersonate the original modder on another website and make some of that money too!".

From my perspective, you MC Modders brought this on to yourselves. You wanted money for your work, other people wanted to cash in. Simple as that.

Now an argument I see many times for USING Adfly and whatnot is "We deserve some money for the work we put into our mods!" and "Updates don't break the mods for those other games do they?".

My counter to both, I see total conversion mods for Napoleon Total War, Empire, Silent Hunter 4, and many other games be in development for years (The Great War Mod for Napoleon Total War has been in development for 2-3 years now) and not once have the creators of these mods asked even for a donation! They realise that its for fun and a side project! They do it for the community feedback and most certainly FUN! They don't need to make money off of them! If you need Minecraft mods to have an income, then you might want to look into some other sources of cash flow. As HussarlTW states, the modding spirit is FREE SPIRIT and should be OPEN SOURCE. Not the other way around as many modders seem to think here.

Now, for the breaking mods. A great example is the hour or two that it'll take to update your code. Is it really worth .02 cents a click? Really? A recent example of mods being destroyed by updates is Mount and Blade: Warband. With the recent Napoleonic Wars DLC they have been putting updates out for both, and each new update has broken the mods, they have compatibility issues with the newer versions. All the active total conversion mods haven't updated any of their code, even with 2+ weeks time between two of the updates! Because it is not as simple as Minecraft (From my understanding of course, but Java can be a jumbled mess as well) but weeks with compatibility issues is a lot different then the time it takes to update a Minecraft Mod.

Sure, you can download an old version of the game to play the mods, but you can do that with Minecraft too.

I hope this sparks an interesting and civil debate.

Seriously, that kind of thing would get you mocked in any other modding community, you'd be considered a complete and total douchebag. Speaking as a modder myself, I'd feel like a complete dip. "Hey, go to this suspicious site that's been known to have harmful impact every now and then for people that haven't heard of things like Skip Screen, Adblock, or the various other add-ons available for Firefox and Chrome."

This is the point I've been trying to show since this entire debacle came up.

It's a shame. HussarlTW (A famous Total War Modder) has the same attitude as me and you. He just wants to be credited if something he made is used, he doesn't even care to give permisson. He just wants to be acknowledged. Of course, this is the exact opposite to the Minecraft Forums.

It was a few months ago, it might have died since then.

posted a message on How do you make custom armor? And how to get custom texture packs to work?
So I've been working on a texture pack of my own for not too long. I got all the paintings done and decided to see what they would look like in game. But on my texture pack list the icon is gray, and when it isn't, it doesn't work. Any help there?

But on to the other part. I want to design some custom armor, I remember using some program a while ago to make a custom skin, is there a program similar to that? Or will I have to do it all through 2-D?

This is all coming from a texture pack newb so any and all help is appreciated :biggrin.gif:.

No, I don't even know what other type of hosting website there is. Perhaps you should just bypass said parental controls? Unless they're built into your line, they're breakable.

Yeah, they're ISP. After doing some research, I found it available here: http://www.mpgh.net/forum/384-minecraft-mods/423137-explosives-1-1-a.html

It's virus free according to Kapersky. I know some Minecraft sites you can upload and host files there...

But for now, I have to deal with it :/

Is there going to be an alternate download link, possibly to one that is not a file locker?

My parents recently put up an ISP firewall that blocks file lockers. Thus I can not download this awesome mod D:< and I was so looking forward to it...

Steam because: You don't have a true point, I've used it for two years now without an issue, what the heck is Impulse? I've never heard of it, there are more games on Steam. Steam has amazing sales.

What else could I ask for?
