posted a message on POLL: Do you like climbing spiders?
I don't really care anyway, I stopped playing with mobs on when I decided to play it more for creativity than survival. The people that complain about them being able to climb confuse me. You refuse to turn on peaceful because there's no mobs. but you complain that a mob can defeat your house without a ceiling?

posted a message on Minecraft has an item limit, yay!
On the C++ vs Java argument, the languages don't function the same. C++ is compiled completely, while Java is compiled to a .class file (.jar's are a collection of these files that can be executed without being an applet or in an IDE). So while C++ can run as it's compiled as far as it can go, Java runs a through a JVM that complies one further step from the .class file to the finished level (this is what allows Java to run on multiple OS'es as the JVM on the OS interprets it differently).

So while I love java, it'll never be as efficient as C++ due to the JVM. As for the item limit, I never delved far enough in my computer science classes to learn enough about what might or might not restrict the addition of features. I really wouldn't be worried though block wise, I think 256 blocks would get a little crazy.

posted a message on Am I the only one who thinks squids are scary?
I was scared of them until I found out they weren't hostile. I got in game as soon as notch tweeted that the update was out and didn't read any release stuff. So I just stumbled upon them and spent about half an hour studying them before I finally noticed "they don't attack"

8/10. Content is pretty good, I like being able to dye sheep random colors. The lag every few seconds is annoying though. I used to have no lag issues at all, but now it's the same thing every few seconds, just freezes.

I've had no problem finding them. Just head towards large bodies of water and you should see a few. They seem to dive down farther the closer you get. Sorta passive, but still scared I guess?

I agree with some of the ideas in the OP. Maybe he'll add stuff like that later and just wanted to get the basics in with this update. I think this update is the best one so far, even better than halloween.

Look at all the games you own from developers... how many of those games have stuff added after they're done? Almost all of them, here's some examples.

    WoW: 3 or 4 expansions
    Civ III: 3 expansions
    Civ IV: 3 expansions
    AOE III: 2 expansions

The list goes on and on... There will probably be a small feature freeze for a while so he can work on the core gameplay and make the game more efficient. We'll get stuff added, just not at the rate it was during Alpha. Once the game is "complete" he'll probably add stuff occasionally to make the game more rounded.

But that's just all my opinion.

Wrong section, also, is your computer slow?

The power of one's computer has nothing to do with the function of a client sending to a server... The reason you need to is because the server (it can't be servers because it's way too slow) they're running this on is over loaded. They need to upgrade to either 1) a more powerful one that is only hosting these forums or 2) split the load onto separate servers.

Pretty interesting. But is there a need for the water?

As long as you like flying backwards from your new crater, no there is not a need. Water absorbs the blast and prevents damage to the blocks, but still proppels the TNT ammunition. When you're loading you wanna make sure not to put a block in the spot where the water is... it's not good.

    Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4ghz
    4GB of DDR2 RAM @ 1066mhz
Nvidia GTX 9800+ w/512MB ram (default clock is 738 mhz)
    Nvidia 780i FTW mother board

My game never lags... and I'm running two monitors and multiple other applications at the same time while I play. I play on the highest settings btw. I think the issue I've seen when running it on my laptop (which doesn't run it nearly as well as the desktop I just detailed out) is the CPU usage. My laptop have 4GB of RAM in it also, but it's only running a dual core processor. Until the code has gotten into it's final stages and all be optimized people will be seeing lag everywhere. Especially since Java uses a just in time compiler, the code is compiled by the machine it's running on (hence why one Java app can run on multi OSes, the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) is doing a lot of work to allow it to run everywhere.

    tl;dr

Java is very CPU intensive, especially in a game that is in the testing phases, and thusly not optimized.

FYI Minecraft isn't multi-threaded, that means it doesn't use more then one core at once, the only reason you would get better performance is if your laptop CPU was clocked lower(the ghz) or if it was only single core in which case the background processes would have to share the core minecraft is using and therefore it would basically 'accidently' slow down the game.

Yeah, my laptop CPU clocks a fair bit slower, not sure exactly how much, haven't looked in awhile. I sort all my processes around different Cores to give minecraft its own core, a practice that a lot of people should try since it really cuts down on lag.
