Jul 6, 2011berky93 posted a message on Printing Out MinecraftI've always known how to export minecraft worlds into my 3d modelling program, and I've been printing objects for almost a year now; I can't believe I never thought to print out any of my minecraft creations! Then again, while many things I make are awesome, most of it wouldn't look very good as a print. I'll have to change that!Posted in: News

Jun 15, 2011berky93 posted a message on Pistons: Work In ProgressAm I the only one who noticed that pistons are geometrically...wrong? I mean, the "body" of the piston (the static part) is about 3/4 the width of the block. That means that at maximum, the piston should be able to extend by 3/4 of a block. But instead, it extends by a full block. I mean, I can see how that could be easily coded to work with no issues, I just noticed it nonetheless.Posted in: News
On a different note, I wonder how "mounted" items will react to pistons? If a piston pushes a block that has a torch or a sign or a hatch, how will said item react?
EDIT: I just had an idea for a new type of secret doorway, assuming doors can be pushed (or will move with the blocks they are on)
Basically, you have two stacked sticky pistons with a door on top of them, and then two blocks of whatever your wall material is above that. This is placed in the ground so that when the pistons are off the two wall blocks are aligned to the rest of the wall. Flick a switch (with some carefully placed redstone) and the door rises out of the bottom of the wall. -

It's more legit than just using an inventory editor, since you still have to put in the effort to find/harvest the blocks. still cheating though.

Anyway, I suggest you find some voxel sphere blueprints (blueprints for making spheres out of cubes, they're somewhere on the forums or just google it) and make the sphere first, then add the supports for the sphere and build out. Lay out a ground pattern first to make sure everything fits where you want it before building 3D structures. I recommend building with iron blocks.

Yum.
You should recreate the whole cast of A Bug's Life

So I would high-tail it to that switch and lockdown! Then I'd sit in my room and cry

Wait, you want him to use a lung condition caused by inhalation of volcanic ash?

The creeper on the side is cut off, which is a big no-no for icon making. Anything that isn't displayed fully should be cut logically, as in using a frame or along a border. Don't just cut it straight at the edge of the image. Try flipping it and putting it on the other side of the circle, and having it cut off at the circle's edge. Honestly I don't think the chicken needs to be there, but if you want it there anyway make it part of the background (blurred, and in the circle.)
I also noticed that Steve is kinda blurry, might want to sharpen him up a bit.
I think you may be trying to over-complicate this. Icons are supposed to be simplified representations of the content they lead to. The current icon actually does a great job at this. Simplify. The time it takes to create and the quality of the output have no correlation (assuming quality is measured quantitatively, to allow for a correlation in the first place ).
I hope those tips help you out. You have a good base, it just needs some work.
EDIT: oh yeah, and be very careful with glow and shadow in an image with an alpha (transparent) background. Sometimes even if it looks like the gradient fades out fully before the edge of the image in Photoshop, once you start using the icon you notice that it suddenly cuts off, which looks bad. The best way to test for this is to put your icon onto a blank document that is larger than the icon's dimensions. If the glow is white put it on a black image.
