Correct me if I'm wrong, but why would you even need potions in Survival? By the time you have the ability to create potions, you probably have full armour with great enchnantments. The only reason I can think of is when battling the Wither.

I think they should just focus on making the Nether better. Just because it's a portayal of "hell" doesn't mean there has to be very few blocks! Make it like the Overworld, but with other blocks. Nether trees would look great as well. Create a whole other landscape in the nether. Nethercaves, Netherores (I actually like Netherquartz)
