Gryphons are half eagle and half lion right? And hippogriffs are a hybrid of a gryphon and a horse, the horse being an animal that players can tame. So maybe gryphons could be a non-tameable version of hippogryphs that's always hostile? Still though that is a bit redundant and doesn't really add much to the game to be honest.
I just had a weird thought. Actually maybe this belongs in the F/A Revival thread but it's the same people working on both so whatever. So in a world where mythical creatures like dragons and hippogryphs are real, shouldn't there also be extinct mythical creatures? Maybe if F/A comes to 1.10 you could do something where having both mods installed unlocks all kinds of fictional fossils and extinct creatures. Maybe that's where the gryphon could go (so it's like an extinct predecessor of hippogriffs). Or you could have giants, behemoths, leviathans, something like that.

Those are based on the real life tuatara, which live in New Zealand and have a "third eye", an area on their foreheads that is sensitive to light. Also they're not lizards; despite looking exactly like lizards, they are rhynchocephals.

Amphipthere (that's just one spelling), is a mythical, winged serpent. Pick at the name all ya like, mate, but it wasn't created here. It's ancient European if I remember correctly.
Edit: Actually it looks like it comes from allover the place...
Basic design. Usually artists inaccurately make them more dragon-like.
Oh it's actually amphiptere then? In that case it means "both bird" or "bird on both sides" which makes more sense because it's like a dragon but has almost all birdlike features (head, wings, tail, etc.)

Hmm the Greek roots are "amphi" (both or on both sides) and "there" (beast). Beast on both sides? I wonder what that means.

Maybe your second idea could be a Titan, or ancient God, that is trying to take revenge on the world for banishing him centuries ago. It could act a type of endboss for the mod, and would require you to befriend/tame the monsters of the wild, and create an army to defeat him.
That's actually really interesting that you would say that because when I was writing that, I was thinking about the player themselves being a sort of end boss that the hunter's trying to kill. But your idea could work too, maybe killing the Enderdragon makes it possible for an ancient god to come through the portals into the Overworld. I think that would be better as its own mod though (or maybe an addon for this mod, or an option in the config that you can turn off, or something).

Though you said that the snow villager mob would be peaceful, I think it would fit the mod nicely if you added another species of creature that hunted dragons in a future release. These creatures could be aggressive towards the player, but their main objective is towards the extinction of the dragon species, which they could grab their treasure and skulls to adorn their villages. Possibly a bi-pedal reptilian type creature, that could have fire immunity?
Anyways, don't know if anybody else has had this idea yet, but I just thought it would go well with the other mobs you've had already presented for this mod.
I think it should be another subtype of villager, but a bipedal lizard species would also be cool if it's not too similar to dragons itself. Also it would be interesting if the dragonslayer race (whatever they end up being) would ally with the player to kill a wild dragon, but if you raise your own, they would come kill you and your dragon. Maybe once you kill the wild dragon they will even try to steal the egg and become aggressive if you try to take it.
Since we're on the topic of NPCs that kill stuff, a monster slayer villager would be cool too. It would basically be a very overpowered villager in silver armor that tracks and kills powerful beasts. Of course, there is one beast whose head he prizes most of all. It is a creature whose skill in combat rivals his own, and whose power over the environment surpasses any other in the known world. This bloodthirsty beast slays animals by the dozens, strips the earth of its treaure, and commands even dragons. What is this creature that the slayer is so focused on killing?
It's you. Basically this villager hunts you down when you render the chunk with him in it. He'll follow you for a few days just watching and hiding behind trees, similar to the AI used in the Stalker Creepers mod. Then he'll strike when you're at low health or otherwise vulnerable.

The current manticores remind me more of antlions to be honest.

I said in my post that the marriage thing would only be in the game if MCA is installed. Since you know how MCA has their own versions of modded villagers?

I know there's already lots of creatures but I'd like to suggest nymphs. Nymphs (from Greek mythology originally) are female nature spirits. Different kinds live in different places like trees (dryads), rivers (naiads), or mountains (oreads). They are neutral to the player but turn hostile if you disturb their habitat. You can also gain their favor by giving them gifts, and they can give things in return. What makes them different from other creatures is they typically don't show themselves to the player, unless you have either become friendly with them or have pissed them off so much they actually come to kill you. A traveling player may suspect that a nymph lives nearby if they hear laughter or see signs such as leaves blowing, water bubbling, or ores twinkling.
Reside in trees and are typically bound to one tree, which looks like a regular vanilla MC tree except that it's hard to break. They get angered by players killing animals nearby, chopping trees nearby, or even worse, trying to chop her tree itself. When angered, will teleport away your animals and randomly poison you when you are in the vicinity. Befriended by planting flowers and saplings around her tree.
Reside in rivers or lakes. Angered by excessive fishing, building, or placing boats in the river. When angered, you will find yourself unable to catch fish in her river, boats will break on their own, and players will lose all their air when swimming underwater there. Befriended by dropping shiny things into the river, such as ender pearls, prismarine, or nether quartz.
Reside on mountains that have an unusual amount of ore. Angered by mining their ore or killing animals there. When angered, more monsters will come after you and angry wolves will appear to kill you. Befriended by bringing monster drops and leaving them on top of the mountain.
- Pan flute: trade from dryad. Has the power to calm down hostile mobs, turning them neutral. Takes a while to play and also has a long cooldown, so it's not overpowered.
- Flower garland: trade from dryad. Goes on your head, makes you look like a snapchat filter. Also probably repels creepers or something.
- Aqua silk: trade from naiad. Used to craft undine robes. Not recommended for underwear.
- Undine hood/robe/robe bottom/boots: A set of armor that offers little protection, but makes the wearer completely invisible when in the water. Good for sneaking into ocean monuments, stealing nagas' treasure, or avoiding Undertale fans who don't know what "undine" is actually from.
- No gift for oreads because I can't think of a good one, but maybe they'll just trade lots of ores.
When very angered, for example if most of their habitat is destroyed, nymphs will appear in their physical form to attack you. They have very high defense and regeneration, which can be disabled by using fire or poison on them (otherwise they're really hard to kill). They also have special abilities; dryads can poison and slow you, naiads can inflict drowning damage which ignores armor, and oreads have high defense even when burning and/or poisoned.
When befriended, nymphs will appear to you in their physical form and allow you to trade with them or even give you stuff for free.
If MCA is installed it should also be possible for the player to marry nymphs, earning the achievement "Nymphomaniac", haha see what I did there? And also have demigod babies bc why not.

Honestly I'm quiet interested in seeing a Kappa. For those who don't know the kappa is an urban legend from Japan. in which is a bipedal duck amphibian thing which has a natural bowl of water on it's head. It's a size of a child and are known to drown children. Charming really.
I support this, and also more monsters from Japanese mythology in general. I'm guessing by previous comments that Asian dragons aren't happening (and that makes sense, there's already two kinds of dragon) but other monsters would be cool.
Off topic: I first read the link in your sig as "Androgynous Minecraft Structure Compilations" and wondered why Minecraft structures would have to present as a certain gender, then realized I am an idiot. Kappa.

i am sure that this subject has come up before, however if this mod were a LOTR mod... the current dragons that you are depicting are called 'Drakes' they are just like dragons, except for one major difference, they lack the intelligence of 'Dragons' and do not speak. (sound familiar?) lol anyways i thought this was ever so slightly interesting.
please do not EVER bring this subject up
i am hoping that my post is the last talk of the Ice and Fire modded dragons are not dragons. if these were based off of true Legends, they aren't even Wyverns, they are Drakes.
do we understand each other?
This isnt a LOTR mod though.

The main page received a massive overhaul recently, however I can usually get 1 or 2 creatures done in a day it's just I give them some breathing time after for me to check for issues, make new variants or just in case I come up with a new idea. For example, the hippocampus was modelled in a solid block yesterday, while the mermaid / naga was modelled last weekend. I also have a bunch of other creature models that I am holding off due to not being perfectly happy with them.
On a similar note here is the product of this morning's efforts.
Those look awesome. The red one reminds me of the real life legend of the mongolian death worm (called "large intestine worm" in Mongolian).

I hope that doesn't mean 1.10 and 1.11 will have no new mobs... Or they're starting a new pattern where every update has mobs.

Also Jeb said somewhere that you're only able to attack with your main hand.

Honestly, I'd be ok with dinosaurs if they made them fit in with Minecraft. No DNA or fossil reviving or any of that stuff, just dinos as new mobs you could find in the world. A lot of people are saying they wouldn't fit in with the game because they're extinct, but if you think about it, Minecraft isn't really Earth. It's just a world where some of the animals happen to look like blocky versions of Earth animals. Dinosaurs, or mobs that look like dinosaurs, don't have to be limited by what happened to them in real life.

My theories about dungeons:
The dungeons with spawners in them (mineshafts, dungeon rooms, nether fortresses, and strongholds) were built by the pigmen, since humans and testificates have not invented spawner technology yet. The pigmen are extinct now because when they discovered the nether, they were infected by the virus which wiped them all out, then spread to the overworld and killed most humans, causing the zombie apocalypse. Some humans survived because they were immune to the virus, these are the players today.
The desert wells, pyramids, and jungle temples were probably built by early humans or pigmen. Desert wells were definitely built by humans/pigmen because they look different from the wells in desert villages, so we know testificates didn't build them. As for pyramids and jungle temples, they use redstone for the traps and only humans and pigmen have knowledge of redstone.
Ocean temples I think were built by some sort of ancient underwater race (don't say mermaids, don't say mermaids) Mermaids? Stabs Discovery Channel guy in the throat no of course they weren't mermaids. Anyway, whoever these ancient sea people were, the guardians are obviously some kind of golem that these people made to protect their temple. The reason why I think they're golems is they seem to be made out of prismarine.

Ok I'm gonna take a wild guess at what the new arrow types are.
Orange: incendiary, aka fire arrow. Probably lights blocks and/or mobs on fire (definitely blocks, because otherwise, the Flame enchantment would replace it).
Yellow: glowstone arrow. Idk maybe it will be used to place light wherever it lands? Could be useful for exploring caves. Maybe also if you hit a mob with it, the mob could get a yellow outline so it's like a tracer arrow. This would make hunting people down in PvP a lot easier.
Green: either poison arrow or slime arrow. I'm leaning towards poison because there is currently no poison enchantment, whereas a slime arrow would be basically the same thing as knockback.
Black: I've heard people say Wither arrow, but personally I think it will be explosive. Jeb has already stated that he doesn't want the Wither effect to be something players can use. Also a wither arrow would be kind of stupid because it's basically just a stronger form of poison arrow.
May 1, 2014My new favorite survival challenge on servers will be to put someone on one of those slime/piston vehicles (idk what they're called), a hundred or so blocks above the ground, and just set it off in one direction. The idea is, eventually they'll either find an ocean to jump into, or a tall enough mountain that they won't die from fall damage, and try to survive wherever they land.Posted in: News
