i'm cool with more variety. in the future it'd be cool if there were some biome specific mobs too, like scorpions for desert, and that applies to peaceful mobs too (penguins in snowy areas, for example). i'd also like to see the frequency of existing mobs adjusted based on specific places - like up the frequency of slimes in the same range of blocks where diamond occurs, but not anywhere else, stuff like that. i could brainstorm on mobs for a long ass time but i think those are the most reasonable suggestions.

anyway in terms of this update, it sounds kinda like it's gonna be a trailing thing, where a decent chunk of the changes come on halloween, then the rest that he's not finished with will trickle out on fridays for awhile.

but why even make torches temporary in the first place if lanterns are going to be just as easy to make? i'm not going to get any sense of accomplishment surviving one night on my pocket full of coal and then switching to lanterns immediately. permanent lighting should be a reward for developing your world to a certain point, a luxury so you can take your mind off maintaining your first base and turn it towards later-game concerns, such as using hell to explore a huge world that now contains biomes. it also serves the double purpose of requiring you to use steel and flint (i've put about 60 hours into my world and have yet to make, let alone use, steel and flint), unless you want to waste coal completely replacing your torches. if hypothetically it should require redstone, well, by the time you have a big enough base for it to be a serious annoyance to re-light your torches, you're gonna have dozens of stacks of redstone anyway. other uses for redstone is a whole discussion in its own right but even if i used it for logic gates i don't think i could realistically spend 15 stacks of it. what better place to dump the rest of it than as a later game reward for surviving up to that point? "phew! FINALLY, electricity!" instead of my current reaction to redstone which is something like "sigh... more redstone... more redstone..." i get more excited about finding gold by this point just because it's a different color.

it really synergizes well (theoretically anyway) with the current state of survival mode. SURVIVAL mode, keep that word in mind, this mode is for the people who want survival to be an actual concern throughout their experience, and not just a vague pretense that has no effect on your gaming experience past the first night. i haven't honestly felt like i was living on the edge since my first night, and that was what drew me into the game - the combination of being in danger, and being able to use my environment to protect myself from that. this isn't creative mode and if i wanted infinite access to every resource in the game, that's what i'd play, but that's not the side of the game i'm looking for when i play survival. there's literally no reason for me to do anything in the game right now - find diamond, in order to make diamond picks in order to find more diamond, and build up a humongous backlog of coal and redstone. an actual demand for resources would go a long way towards making me feel once again like i'm only one step ahead of being blown up or shot or having my brains eaten.

that said i agree it probably shouldn't involve iron. iron is already in short supply and we'll be needing a lot of these lanterns. that's ok for me, with my base up and running for a long time now, but it'll definitely show in new worlds.

Glass shouldn't be used in lanterns, in my opinion, simply because having them largely dependant on glass, thus sand, thus on how close you built to a beach seems sort of dodgy in my opinion, as those awesome mountain-top bases will become a lot less awesome if bathed in darkness due to being 20 minutes from the nearest sandy beach.

i think you're about as likely to be 20 minutes from the nearest source of sand as you are to be 20 minutes from the nearest source of coal...

kinda hoping it requires redstone. i like the idea of having other uses for redstone for those of us who can't be bothered learning the logic gate stuff.

i kinda like the idea of coal torches being temporary. but only if there's a permanent light source that you can craft further down the line, maybe with redstone? i don't think it'd ruin the game or change the focus of the game or anything like that. it's 'survival' mode, you already have to do certain things to keep yourself safe. the lifespan of the temporary torches could always vary depending on difficulty.

anyway i voted for bacon, cos i'm hungry.
