posted a message on Slime Ball USES (Crafts & Other Ideas)
my idea was to use them to make the sponge. probably not an item most players would care much about but it could have its uses and slime balls are suitably rare for making such a niche item.

posted a message on suggestion for dyes
i sort of skimmed over recent topics and couldn't find anything on this so sorry if there's already a thread, buuut...

apparently notch intends to implement dyes into the game at some point, so then wool (and presumably other materials) would provide survival mode with the variety of colored blocks available to creative mode players. my suggestion is to use flowers for this purpose.

how i imagine it going is, you make a bowl and then put the flower in it, perhaps two (opens up the possibility of mixing colored flowers for more variety with less differently colored flowers.) for example:

    :_: = wooden bowl

    [] :RFlower: []
    [] :RFlower: []
    [] :_: []

would create like, say, a stack of four bowls of red dye, which when used on a block of wool (right click) would create :Red:

    or

    [] :YFlower: []
    [] :RFlower: []
    [] :_: []

would create four stacks of orange, which when used on wool would create :Orange:

or perhaps to get more dye out of each individual flower, it could just be one flower in the color of dye you want. either way, obviously there's not many possible dyes available with the current selection of flowers, so for this to work there would need to be a larger variety of flower colors (preferably with slightly different sprites, but that's an aside). flowers would probably need to spawn somewhat more frequently, at least in temperate biomes - but ive been seeing more flowers spawning since the halloween update. i dunno if that's because i've been exploring more since then or if the rate of flower spawns actually went up.

either way, thoughts? brainstorms? i dunno how balanced it would be or not be, but i'd prefer there be an organic, immersive way to obtain dye, and i like the idea of every material having a use, even if it's small or auxiliary. plus i think some new flower types would add some subtle variety to the landscape.

posted a message on A Clay Suggestion
i wouldn't mind this but i don't particularly need it either. both times i went hunting for clay, i found massive quantities of it and got a full stack of brick blocks out of it... it seems to spawn rather reliably in shallow water. i suppose with the current spawn rate, if you wanted to make a massive project out of brick, it'd be more of a pain, so maybe that's a good argument for this.

you mentioned being better protected, though - i thought brick was the same durability as stone and it was just an aesthetic bonus?

posted a message on BUG: Blackschreen crash
about 1/4 times i try to use a portal, this happens to me, and it deletes all my items and respawns me when i restart the game. i've gotten into the habit of only carrying a few things through the portal at a time and only when necessary - not losing anymore diamond picks and full suits of armor to this.

also the game's been super laggy since yesterday for some reason, which makes the black screen thing happen a lot more often.

posted a message on Amazed at lack of content
there kinda is a lack of replay value. it's understandable and i don't see why anyone would get worked up over it, but it's true. and i also imagine it's something notch hopes to work towards. the game didn't get as big as it is until recently and now there's a demand for more replayability. he'll probably try to work towards meeting that demand.

If you look at Notch's twitter, he already has plans for a 'red moon' night where the zombie swarm and break blocks to get to you.

    woah seriously? that's bad ass.

posted a message on Notch mentioned a new mob that was 'unfair'
ghasts aren't hard because a ghast by itself is just hard, they're hard because they can pop around the corner and start firing at you at any time - when youre in a fight with pigmen, if you're surrounded by fire or even lava and don't have many directions to go in, if you're on a ledge or anywhere else where you can't afford to have the ground exploding under you, etc etc... they're creepy because they're always floating around and can fire from extremely far away and there's nothing you can do about it usually, in an open space anyway.

but also i do think the nether is too bare bones. one thing about mobs in the regular world is that they get geometrically more complicated when more than one type is attacking you (spiders jumping out at you while you're in the middle of a firefight with some skeletons is particularly annoying.) the nether just doesn't have enough going on in it yet. ghasts could be a much scarier part of a bigger picture if there were more mobs in the nether (the one other mob is potentially neutral if you're safe). i don't actually think ghasts should be changed much - at the most maybe they could have more health for when they come into range. rather the nether needs to be built upon some more and the ghasts would just be one part of how terrifying/hard it can be.

honestly imo the pigmen are way more 'unfair' - if you so much as look at one wrong you've suddenly got 20 ****ing pigmen running after you.

i found some pretty easily when i explored around the kinds of areas clay tends to spawn, but it's too rare, i'd like to see it occur more frequently - still less so than sand/gravel though

posted a message on Bed, Customizable tools, flag creation, shield
i like the bed idea. additionally maybe it could regenerate health, but maybe not since it would make food a little less useful. but at the same time it would make a home with a bed that much more convenient and safe, and food would still be necessary anywhere away from home. i imagine the bed being built in parts IE frame is a full bench of wood planks, plus a full bench of cotton for the mattress, and assembled again in the bench. definitely like the idea, whether it regens health or not.

like the idea of the shield too. i thought of this before actually, didn't take the time to think it out though. maybe it could work like a combination of armor in MC (has a slot) and the shield in zelda (has to be brandished using your secondary tool button.) it could work like that too - have it set to its own key, r for example, and it takes damage for you. It could take greatly increased damage from melee and creepers/ghast blasts to incentivize saving it for skeletons and emergencies. maybe that's pushing the game too far in a combat direction but i like the idea of being able to craft your way into more complicated playstyles if you want to. obviously we're doing just fine without them but that's not the point.

posted a message on Ghasts like Slimes
they really aren't very resilient. they're mostly hard because they can spot you from so far away. well and they blow the **** out of any wall you hide behind. but i'd rather they had more health than behave like slimes. as for slimes i'd like to actually see one once in awhile.

posted a message on SUPER TORCH AND LANTERN TOPIC

but why even make torches temporary in the first place if lanterns are going to be just as easy to make?

Relighting 3,750 torches every day would be impossible -- you'll never have time to do anything else. Also, crafting all those lanterns to create this kind of world just got a hell of a lot harder, even if the new recipe only requires relatively common materials! Glass, for example -- if the new recipe calls for torch+glass (as I hope), now you not only need to mine 938 coal and chop a whole bunch of trees, you also have to (a) find lots and lots of sand, (:cool.gif: craft tools to harvest the sand, and (c) harvest coal or wood for the furnace to melt the sand into glass. Believe me, creating that much glass takes a VERY long time, and it's hard work. But at least it's within reason.

true, but you don't start out the game in that kind of world even in the game's current state. i'm admittedly very light on the terraforming in my game, and even then it's taken me an extremely long time to get my base to the modest state it's in. i can't imagine a person who has accumulated the resources to safely control that much land, in that picture, wouldn't have had the time to pick up some sand along the way. redstone is arguable, depends how much time you spend underground.

SURVIVAL mode, keep that word in mind, this mode is for the people who want survival to be an actual concern throughout their experience, and not just a vague pretense that has no effect on your gaming experience past the first night.

Your definition of "survival" doesn't necessarily match mine. Perhaps, you are okay with having to battle mobs every single night; MY definition of "survival" is to create a world where enemy mobs simply can't spawn at all! Creating a Paradise out of a hellish, Resident Evil-type world...that's my goal, and it's the same with a LOT of other players.

i actually hate fighting mobs in this game to be honest. but i feel like the threat of dangerous mobs is what makes survival mode survival mode. it's very primal. for the first couple days i'm into that, but after awhile i don't feel like i earned my safety anymore. you do have to work to increase your safety and luxury in this game, but it doesn't last for very long. there aren't many limiting factors.

And don't forget, the torch/lantern change isn't limited to Survival Mode; players who only play on Peaceful Mode will also be affected by this change.

good point. it might be a good idea to scale things differently according to difficulty then, not only spawn rates but how long torches last for example. then maybe survival mode could be more easily catered to more than one type of player. personally i want to have to work for more convenient technology, it gives it a more 'survivorman' feel like i had the first couple of nights, and i wouldn't mind relighting my torches for awhile until i have enough resources flowing in to upgrade - that could be hard mode. but you're right, some people don't want those restrictions. it's interesting cos this game has such a huge following in alpha, and people can imagine what they want the game to turn into.
