i like all of it except desert glass. i don't strongly dislike it but for decoration purposes, dyes (when implemented) could be used to tint the glass so harvesting it would be kinda redundant. no reason it couldn't be there for flavor though.

also, hedges should occur in the desert but very brown (still-rooted tumbleweeds)

posted a message on Establishing a "non-intrusive narrative"
i like this sort of breadcrumb approach to introducing what bit of story there might be, especially the above-ground, one-time dungeon that has an increased chance of spawning as the game goes longer. maybe these story-related spawns should have an increased chance the further you travel from your spawn point in general, probably not in any particular direction though. the only thing i don't like is the decreased monster spawn areas. there's a difficulty slider for that. i'm thinking that going after the 'conclusion' of the story should be driven by curiosity and the desire for fancier/more convenient items, like everything else in minecraft. there could be multiple of these boss castles, each with unique design and a unique boss mob, with a sort of loosely-themed set of loot. maybe they could also have mine-able blocks that aren't found anywhere else either (in addition to mossy cobblestone.) i also want there to be a castle where you get to loot the boss's epic record collection :iapprove:

i also like the idea of there being some sort of subtle hint in the game that the world used to be populated before this blight hit - which could include most hostile spawns - and all that's left now are these scattered ruins and dungeons. something creepy like that. i've always felt like at its heart, minecraft in survival mode is an extremely creepy game.

idk about everyone else but I enjoy reading a good flame, its sort of evolved to have its own set of rules.
At least its interesting to read everyone rebuttals.

i don't like seeing it here though. it's bizarre that such a whimsical game creates such nerd rage in its players.

yeah it would've been a better publicity move for the first beta update to be more impressive, like more along the lines of the halloween update. but he did say straight out that the content would come during beta, not at hour zero of beta, so i mean, i dunno what everyone was expecting.

What I think is Notch said optimizations were made for servers, and yet the server is still using just as much RAM and now 3 times the CPU to do the same thing. Decaying leaves made the actual gameplay about a million times more bearable. Chunks are taking far too long to load now and I can often see through the entire world for a good 5 minutes before it fills in. The lighting is more insane than ever before, rendering pitch black areas more often. Dupe items.

Notch should have spent less time making Mojang exclusives, watching Starcraft 2 tournaments, and making games that have nothing to do with Minecraft

Haha that's what I was thinking when I saw him Watching ths SC2 tourny, and making games for all these tournaments and then the Mojang cloaks add to it.

BUT.. I still think he is doing a good job for a 1 man operating team.

Honestly though, he has made roughly what, 8 million off of this game? If he went and actually bought some legit experienced developers the game would be growing at 3x speed, but it seems he is to absorbed in keeping it, and earning even more at the exspense of pissing his player base off that he doesn't want to.

Although, I won't judge his intentions, that's just what I get out of the past few months of blog posts and updates, and the fact he way slowed down updates the same time the $ started rolling in.

seems a little cynical to me. maybe it's correct, i dunno, but i don't think notch ever intended to be pandering to such a massive audience, or to keep up any kind of professional standards. it's just the way it's turned out. if i were him i wouldn't particularly care for turning it into basically a miniature version of the corporate game development system that he left in order to work on something more fun. that's kinda why he quit, isn't it? i'm kinda jumping to that conclusion so if not, whatever, but still. i'm finding it hard to get pissed off about a $10 game taking awhile to be developed, especially when i can enjoy it while it's being developed.

ugh, i really kinda want to take like a playboy centerfold and edit in red cobblestone over her tits and caption it 'netherrack' but i'm too lazy so you're just gonna have to use your imagination.

So much technical talk about the sulphur, but what about all the other **** that doesn't make sense like 5 bits of iron making an entire mine cart or whatever? Who cares. This sulphur thing is being read way too much into.
It's not as if sulphur makes no sense at all either though. It makes more sense than some man-made gun powder being dropped from creepers at least imo. I like the decision.

yeah and also, well, how much sense can you really expect it to make when you collect from a giant exploding green penis.

yeah, it's pretty unplayable for me. it's always lagged a little from time to time... usually after like a 6 hour marathon. but right now it freezes after like one minute. i've ctrl alt deleted my browser like 10 times today.

i don't like that anyone thinks there's a 'correct' spelling at all, actually, so it's not even a discussion worth having. Wonder what the Romans would've thought of today's 'correct italian spelling'...

anyway, notch really should've strived to get more content into this beta shift if for no other reason so that people on this forum have better things to talk about than the fact that sulfur isn't used to make tnt irl. christ sakes.

laggy as ****. might be due to a combination of some of the changes and the massive increase in sales yesterday what with the end of alpha and all. otherwise it's not like there's a ton of changes yet. seems like more of a mission statement than a big update. like 'smp is becoming playable - time to start adding cool stuff again'. i dunno, if i were expecting this to be a huge overhaul/change i might have been disappointed but honestly i'm not.

definitely like this. especially having there pretty particularly difficult mobs that are extremely limited in number for each chunk. ive only looked at two of your mob suggestions so far and i'm already very impressed.

posted a message on Write in Books!
i'm down for this. books might need to be permanent parts of the bookcase to keep the current crafting recipes the same, though. i imagine it as sort of a chest with with three permanently filled slots and you can activate the one you want, then write in it like it was a text file (or more likely, like a sign but with more room). i'd at least use it to keep track of what went down in each mining location, so i can go back down if i think i mightve missed something or whatever. or remind myself of things i want to do.
