About the pipes: what's the point of automation that isn't automated?

    Not sure if serious.

Obviously there is a point that is too automated. You wouldn;t want to be able to craft a wooden button and stick it on the wall, and pushing it would give you a full jar of each essentia.

You wouldn't want that because the challenge _is_ the fun. Pipes are too good. They solve every problem. They make it so there is nothing to do in the essentia lab.

I'd love to try this, but when I add NEI to my mods folder, MC closes with this error...

[15:54:24 INFO]: Client> 2013-12-04 15:54:24 [WARNING] [ForgeModLoader] The coremod codechicken.nei.asm.NEICorePlugin does not have a MCVersion annotation, it may cause issues with this version of Minecraft

That is a version mismatch. Check that your versions of minecraft, forge and NEI are all the recommended versions.

Ack, it finally happened to me. I lost all my research and research points. After quitting and reloading, I got back the research points, but all the things I researched are now not researched.

I remember starting the launcher, and the green update progress bar took a few seconds to fill, but I didn't do anything unusual when I started play. I put all my gear in a chest (including my Thaumonomicon) and went to the nether in search of warts.

Any advice on how to get my research back?

If you dont have a backup you need to edit your player.dat file using NBTExplorer.

I thinked that you needed to use the wand, and is supposed that i have the goggles at that time? (struggling with the runes logic, understanding diagonals spaces and all that), anyway thanks, i will try again. You know some better way for getting gold? Diamond is piece of cake compared with gold for some reason (searched in layers 28 and 29).

You dont need the goggles, but they show you what aspects are in the cauldron, which helps for trouble shooting. You dont use the wand. Each item that you can create is created by throwing in a catalyst when there are enough essentia in the cauldron. Thaumium is created when you throw an iron bar into a cauldron with at least 4 praecantio.

Gold is most common down deep. It is most comon in layers 1-16, and gets less and less common after that. You can also transmute it out of gold armour you can get from mob drops.

So crucible crafting is not working for me, when i researched thaumium and throwed some shards to form the 4 praecantio and the iron ingot, used the wand in the crucible but nothing happened, tried in creative with a new crucible, put lava, the crucible, and filled it with water, put 2 ethereal essences (praecantio), the iron ingot, used the wand, nothing happened, help? Is not working or Im doing something wrong?

The iron ignot is known as a catalyst, and you would expect that when you threw it in you would trigger the change and get a thaumium. The only reason to use your wand on the cruicble is to reset it. Because you don't understand how it is supposed to work I can imagine any number of things you might have done wrong. Throwing in the iron first would not work for example. Read the thaumonomicon again, and then retry.

If you still have trouble, post a screenshot of what the crucicble looks like before you throw in the iron (use your goggles so we can see what essences it has), and then again what it looks like after.

I like the idea that the system works up to a certain point, but after that the 'suction' gets too low. The player would get some sort of feedback triggered by the fact that the calculation is placing too much load on the server. Then he would manually have to turn off a valve to disconnect part of the pipe network. It strikes a balance between manually controlling every essentia movement and letting the pipe network run totally wild. It could even be controlled by a config setting so beefier servers could allow for more complex networks before 'suction' would fail.

I have a warded jar with 6 essentia in it. I need to put 5 of that essentia into the crucible for a recipe. If there a way to do this? Or will I need to add 3 more essentia, dump all 8 into the cricible, and waste 3? If there is no way to put essentia into the crucible in amounts of less than 8, why don't all recipes use essentia in multiples of 8?

Because then it would be so simple you would not have to make any decisions, and there would never be leftover flux. Things that are bad for Steve are not necessarily bad for the enjoyment of playing Steve.

Why not ask "why are there creepers"?

im having an issue where all the plants and saplings disappear from view and also the hit box when i look directly at them but if i mine the block below where it was it will break. super annoying, i read like 50 pages and couldnt find someone with this problem. if someone can help that would be great.

I doubt you really read 50 pages, because a quick search shows this problem is mentioned 32 times in this thread. It is a conflict with NEItooltips and/or optifine.

I have been using the Thaumometer to scan various items/mobs and because I carry Scribing Tools and Paper with me, I got some research notes appearing in my inventory such as Straw Golem and Research Expertise. When I put these research notes into the research table I can see the various nodes I need to connect up on the parchment but I can't move any letters around or add any aspects to make any of the runes on the parchment light up. Is there some other thing I need to do or ingredient I need?

Maybe you are out of ink or paper in your research desk.

I agree in a way. The tubes are actually almost identical to the TC2 style conduits and I am considering switching back to the limitations the conduits had - amongst them very limited "suck" range. In tc2 you had to set up pumping stations to move vis significant distances.

I'll see how the tubes play however before I go nerfing them too much.

I do really like the look they give the labratory, with a bunch of wierd and dangerous looking machines connected by pipes running everywhere.

I didn't see any real use for the valve, since flow can be so easily controlled by putting labels on bottles. Maybe some sort of restriction on not mixing different types of essentia in the pipes could add back some of the challenge in running an essentia distillery.

Before pipes, I had several factors that i had to consider for my essentia refinery. I had to worry about not leaving a bunch of jars with only a few drops of essentia. I had to worry about pathing for my golems. i had to worry about creating and setting up my golems. I had to think about how to keep the jars organized so I could find what I was looking for.

All those worries represented gameplay. Now, with pipes, all that is gone. I've seen two videos with essentia refineries set up and they are both exactly like mine. There is one solution, and everyone will find it immidiately. Essentia pipes are so strong that there are no challenges to using them. Challenges are good. I like challenges. I wish that coding effort had gone into improving alchemical golems, rather than making them obsolete.

I'm having problems with my mana bean farmer golem. I have a 9x9 mana bean farm floating one block off the ground, with the golem standing under the center. With a water upgrade he should be able to cover the entire farm (four blocks out, one block up), but he almost never gets any from the outermost circle.

Also, he has trouble getting started moving. Once he's realized there's work to do, he does get it all done except for the aforementioned outer ring, but he never does the realizing until something grows right next to him, or until I hit the lazy bum with a snowball.

"Mana beans, master? I don't see any ripe mana beans--" "Falcon PUNCH!!" "Oh you meant those mana beans!"

I think the slow to act thing is intentional. They only check for work at spaced out intervals to reduce the load on the server.

Also on the subject of stones of warding: they dont work if they are sitting on top of a buildcraft pipe.

The problem with this view: You assume that just because Thaumcraft is present, that Thaumcraft will be played.

You assume that, on a multiplayer server, EVERYONE will be active and playing/using the thaumcraft mod portion of that server.

I know of no other mod that makes that requirement.

I can ignore the bees of Forestry if I want.
I can ignore the ages of Mystcraft if I want.
I don't have to make any pipes if I don't want to.
Railcraft might define new rails, new carts, new coke furnaces, etc, but I can still use vanilla rail recipes if the config option on the server permits it.

Mining with COG will be a little different, but the ores are still there, and behave the same when I find them.

It's one thing to tell people, "There are dangerous areas of worldgen. Stay out of them unless you want to play with thaumcraft". That's fine.

It would be one thing if the hungry node in the ocean ate all the water around/above it, so you had visible pockets of danger to avoid.

But to switch the view from "Here are things you can play with" to "Here are things that you must play with" -- sorry. I'm not saying that's inherently bad -- TerraFirmaCraft, Better Than Wolves, etc. -- what I call "total conversion" mods exist, and serve a function/purpose in the community. But they are essentially new and different games.

If Thaumcraft's behavior, worldgen, and expected response to being in the world is to dominate your game play, fine. But make that aspect of it clear up front, and make sure that people on a server know about it.

If I had that happen to me, I'd have pulled TC from the server.

I have two mods on my server (well, going in for 164) that I don't (plan to) use, that are there for other player's enjoyment. If one of those mods suddenly were to make me play with it even if I did not want to, it would go poof.

There are config options to turn off the negative parts of thaumcraft. So it is exactly the same as railcraft. The tough parts can be turned off.

I just explored for 2 hours, found 2 nodes, first one gave me aspects I knew, second one says I don't have the knowledge required to scan it. I'm almost no better off. I only learned one new aspect, and that's because I finally broke an obsidian totem and scanned the objects it dropped. Am I just having horrible luck? Because I just wasted 2 hours for like 5 research points, and some horse armor from a barrow that I didn't need.

Craft everything you know how to craft and scan it all.

How many aspects have you discovered so far? You should be able to get about 20 just from the items you find around a starting base.
