It didn't turn out as epic as I hoped but figuring out how to build in the middle of the sea was fun. If you are going to attempt it. Bring lots of sand and doors. You'll figure out why.
Thank you, jfishjosh. And awesome bump to $666. Anything helps! I think its going to be completely awesome to say I was able to raise a grand for my hospital by just playing this game.
My son underwent some major cardiac surgery back in July and I'll be raising money for the hospital where he got his work done (Children's Hospital of Boston).
I'd figure I'd play Minecraft for 24 hours (starting with a fresh world on hard) and then post a youtube video of the creation if I met my donation goal. I'd appreciate any donations. Its a good cause and since I'm spending nights playing this game anyways, figure it would be a fun way to make some money for the hospital.
Its an interesting idea. But for all the tools you mention that require a metal bar, you've already had to build a furnace to create the bar. So there is a really high chance there is a workbench sitting next to it.
But I do agree the 2x2 square needs more love. But I'd love to see stuff that is useful when you are far away from your workbench. Like maybe 2 dirts, can create a "mud patch" that will restore 1 heart. Or maybe a 1 metal ore (not bar) can be used to create an armor/weapon patch.
At first this came across overpowered, but then I really thought about it and realized it's really only a convenience that has an appropriate cost associated. Personally, I think it should swing VERY slowly (like the amount of time it would normally take to break 3 blocks with an Iron Pick for just one swing) but when it hit it would take all 9 blocks out in one swing and knock back all enemies in range as if hit by a snowball. When you actually hit an enemy, it would break the two blocks they are standing on and force them into the hole left from that on top of doing damage.
Yeah, that was the idea. Try to balance the power with the cost and swing speed. But I think for stone blocks it should require at least 2 swings (maybe a little faster then you describe). So you get that nice satisfying, swing .. Crunch, swing BOOOM. If the blocks disappeared as soon as you hit them, it would feel more like an editing tool.
Not a fan of hammers, but one questions, why do you need lava if its already obsidian???
I was thinking along the lines that lava would be the only way to "shape" the obsidian. And the point is it to be a very expensive weapon. Its a hidden way to cost another 6 bars of iron for the buckets.
What it would take:
3 obsidian blocks, 2 diamonds (for the handle), 2 buckets of lava
What you would get:
A big heavy sledge hammer with a slower swing rate but...
1) When you hit a block with it, not just the block you hit would take take damage but 1 block in each direction (2D).
So each hit against a flat wall could crack 9 blocks instead of 1. It would be awesome when you want to clear large areas.
2) When you hit a mob, the damage is the same/better as an iron sword. But it has a massive knockback.
It would be fun because you could play zombie baseball, but if it has a slower swing rate you have to connect
with the first hit.
Overall: This would be a fun "end game" weapon that would let you effect the world even more dramatically.

However only about $10 has come from the minecraft community (thanks jfishjosh!). I'm blessed to have very supportive friends and family.
I've got one week to come up with just $184, I'm not really great at this begging for money bit. But anything helps.

Ooo, I like that. Maybe one swing would effect multiple mobs within a certain range. Thats hot.
