posted a message on Ping tools?
Is there any way for a server op to ping players, or otherwise monitor the latency of each player? This could be useful to see if a player complaining of lag is the only one experiencing it, which could indicate a problem on their end, or the other way around.

I've got Bukkit installed, and I searched through all the plugins and found nothing. It's surprising that there is nothing to do this. I'm also running on Ubuntu, so if anyone knows a nice way to monitor incoming connections, that would also be cool.

Or if you don't want to give all your friends administrative privileges, there is probably a Bukkit mod that will allow all players to build in the spawn zone.

Yeah i was thinking making heavy snowfall act like soul sand or something, nice ideas brah :Pig:

Right, I think if heavy snow is going to be implemented like that, it would definitely need to pretty heavily restrict player movement so clearing the snow would be pretty much required.

Also, if there were some kind of hunger or heat meters, your heat would drain when not in shelter during snowfall. So much potential.

    In addition:

During snowfall in wintery/snowy regions, snow should pile up on the ground over time, much like water building up on a tile. Varying degrees of 'fullness' of snow on a tile, up to 1 or more full blocks of snow on a tile. This would lead to areas getting flooded with snow, requiring some digging (shoveling?) to regain movement, and the snow blocks could shrink down (like draining water) over time and melt in sunny weather. The result would be a snowy landscape that fills with snow over time during typical snowfall (or over a short period of time during a snowstorm), and often-traveled areas would have less snow (maybe walking on a building snow tile disturbs and removes some of the snow, like walking on a farm tile destroys the crop). I think that would be an amazing weather pattern for the snowy biomes. Maybe even throw in an overcast sky during snowfall, or darken the sky with heavy clouds for a snowstorm. Varying degrees of fog. Tree leaves would die and fall, and grow again in the sunny weather, water would freeze over and thaw, passive animals would not spawn on snow, and only certain monster types (and maybe even monsters exclusive to snow) would spawn on snow. Movement would be restricted when walking on snow, the severity of the restriction according to the depth of the snow tile.

    I'm drooling :Pig:

I agree. However, our Minecraft character is a digger that puts fortresses of dwarves to shame, can shoot faster than a brigade of elves, and can survive an in-human amount of blows. X-ray vision seems like something that he might have.

You have a good point. No player can very well be kept from killing you if they really want to. Mr. Minecraft is too superpowerful.

Only newly generated terrain, of course. He added lakes to the terrain generator, since existing landscape is never again affected by the terrain generator, you will not see lakes appear in existing terrain.

posted a message on Map generator less epic now?
Did it ever occur to any of you that this is a good thing? Not every chunk should be 'epic'. I think it's good that there is a great deal of 'mundane' terrain. Notch should obviously continue to tweak and improve the terrain generator, but having less epic is definitely a good thing. It means when you finally do come across an epic formation, it's even better.

I don't know about you guys but I got kind of tired of having these huge arching mountains and formations with every single map. Clean rolling hills are nice for a change.

I fail to understand how this is a problem. "Newbs" will be playing on Peaceful, so getting obsidian to build a portal will not be an issue.

The Slip should, imho, be difficult to get to, and even harder to master.

posted a message on with new update, will we lose old multiplayer server worlds
I suggest you be okay with the idea of starting a new world. Your old save will still work, but not all features are guaranteed to work without starting a new world. Biomes are the only thing I can think of that will work in existing saves. Oh, and Hell.

It would be too complicated and too much like The Sims.

I don't think it sounds anything like the Sims..

Just imagine having hunger and thirst bars. They don't have to be overly time consuming, maybe it would take three days with no eating to go from full to dead, and two days for water. That's plenty of time to refill your survivor without having to worry about it every time you remember you have hunger bars. As for cold and heat, maybe one bar as a spectrum, with either end being "death" due to cold or heat, and the center being "okay". As with the hunger bars, it could take maybe a full day, sunrise to sunrise, to succumb to the elements. Unlike with the hunger and thirst, that isn't "plenty" of time to build freely. You'd have to rest in a controlled environment (i.e. cabin or underground) to regain your strength, and more importantly you'd have to stay aware of how cold/hot you are. It is, however, an appropriate danger that can be associated with building/working in a naturally dangerous environment.

    On file sizes:

I think that is a reasonable worry. However, I don't think biomes should be blamed for the problem, which is that infinite worlds have potential to take up infinite HDD space. Notch has already taken a step towards a solution, saving every chunk in its own file so that the operating system won't choke on a single massive file. I think that, rather than limiting the potential of biomes, a solution should be found for the potential file size issues. One solution is playing on a multiplayer server. :smile.gif:

so large that .. they're an actual danger to cross.

YES! I love the sound of that. You'd have to build checkpoints and have a defined path through the desert so travelers don't get lost and die. Fill the checkpoints with drinks of water, etc. whatever is necessary to survive in the desert.
