Notch CAN do whatever he wants to do with Minecraft. It's his game. You can't be forced to do something you want. If Notch was forced to make Minecraft, Minecraft wouldn't be innovative. Also, it is true that we get the full release for free. However, even if we are allowed to force Notch to do work against his own free will, I'm pretty sure there isn't a way we can force him to have a due date. Also, it is okay for the finished product to be different than what was expected, unless those things were gauranteed to the extent of being written in a signed contract.

If Notch wanted to abandon Minecraft, he could. But he hasn't. Most people would just fix bugs and then go on to develop a new game or expansion packs, but Notch is doing more than that.

Of course not. If you are selling a product in advance, wich is really what this is all about, you are of course legaly obligated to provide that product. He owns the copyright to the game, that is correct. But we have bought a product, with a promise that there will be a complete product sometime. Same thing if someone arranges a concert, then halfway thru, the cancel the rest of the show. People are then not getting what they payed for, and have the right to have their money refounded. If he stops making minecraft, and it never goess out of beta, he has not fulfilled his commitment, and we as his costumers can demand our money back. Of course we can, anything else would be robbery.

But I am not saying that I, myself is disappointed. Not yet, I love minecraft and it has been worth every single penny I payed for it. It maybe the most "bang for my buck" I have ever recieved in a game. My point is simply that his critisism is well founded, not that I necesarily agree with everything he says.

That being said, I really think it's sad that we might get a minecraft shop. DLC is a concept I really, really hate, and I try to avoid titles who are DLC oriented. The thing I really like about Mojang, was the sense I got from them that they where making games to provide good games first and formost, and that they had the players perspective of things. The main drive for making games was out of a love of computer games, not financial gain. I really, really hope that they don't fall into the same trap as so many other established developers, just spewing out low quality titles just to keep the flow of money going. Notch looks like he cares for gaming culture, and I really hope that the money and fame he gets doess not get to his head to much.

But then again, people tend to asume that I hate Mojang just becouse I point out some points I find worthy of critizising. That actually scares me. This is not black and white. Even though I like minecraft, I have the right to voice my opinion when I am dissappointed to.

And again, even if Notch DIDN'T have an obligation to finish his product, we still would be titled to our opinion. I have the right speak my heart.

And try to see this from Mojangs point of view, if you where mojang, and that you really wanted to make a product that was the best. Wouldn't you like to know the honest opinion from people? Whatever I do, I like to know what people think of the job I am doing. Worshipping doesn't help me at all. Knowing what I can get better at doess. No one is perfect, not even Notch and Mojang.

I think it is important that somebody actually want's to adress this, and it is legitime to voice ones opinion.

For me myself, I love minecraft, and I really think it is worth my money and I will reccomend it to others. But I react on some arguments here. Some claim that, since minecraft is Notch's property, he can do whatever he wants to. No, he can't. Simply becouse he has sold a product to us, the consumers, promising a product with certain qualities. If these qualities aren't meet in reasonable time, he has not filled his commitment of the deal. He must complete minecraft, becouse he has promised to do so in our contract. Others compare this development cylce with other betas for other beta testers. People usually don't pay to play betas, and thus do not have a right to demand something. This is different to us, since we have actually payed to get a product. At discounted price of course, becouse of the beta state, but nontheless, we have payed to play an unfinished product. This changes everything in terms of what we can expect. He has become rich becouse of us, therefore is he also commited to do what he can to meet our expectations (or rather the expectations he him self is giving us, both in the markeding we got when buying, and by the info and hype he is creating
    elsewhere.

Personally, I don't like where 1.8 is going, but that is more of a personal taste issue. The issue here is legitimate becouse it's objective.

Arguments like: If you don't like it, don't play it is stupid out of one simple reason. This is an outcry for developers to take their costumers seriously, and to have a commitment towards their own promises. It is not okey to sell a product wich turns out different than promised, regardless of what people might think about the finished product. This is, as I have said, and outcry to make developers responsible for the statements and promises they make. And they should be responsible, do you really like to be fooled?

posted a message on SMP spawners efficiency
I just logged on again to test, becouse I knew I was the only one on server at the time. Same problem now, but I noticed something strange.

In the sea around me, I counted 14 squid at least, all bunched up in the same chunk and at the same spot. It seems like the got stuck on one spesific block, and I have made this discovery once earlier as well. Doess this have something to do with it?

Edit: I managed to replicate this several times. It seems like it is the squid that somehow fills up the passive mob spots, even though the Wiki claims that squids have their own limit.

If you don't have anything informative or useful to post, don't post.

If you really want an answer to the thread question, here:

In SMP there's little to no difference in the spawning code. Its just that mobs will spawn in loaded chunks (chunks near the player) and in multiplayer there are more than 1 players, thus giving more space for mobs to spawn in the world. Therefore there is less of a chance of mobs spawning on a spawner in SMP than SSP.

    There.

I think this is it. Does this mean that even though people log out, chunks near them are not unloaded, and thus will be able to spawn mobs? Because I have been alone on the server and having almost the same efficiency rate.

And of course I've built it in water. I did as Ethos, removed a VERY large island that was to close. I've spent maybe 12-20 hours on this build.

    And thanks btw.

Yeah, it Depends on how much players there are on the server :smile.gif:

btw: do you have mobs enabled on the server?

Can't remember whether or not I was alone on the server, but I feel quite confident that I was.

Yes of course I had :wink.gif: I've killed lots of mobs earlier, and the hostile mob system works ok. The friendly one hardly works, but it doess work occationally.

    Can bukkit **** things up?

I've built Ethos hostile mob system, and ethos friendly mob system in SMP. The efficiency is very, very low compared to singleplayer, especially on the friendly mob system, since it doesn't spawn anything almost. I've had 3 or 4 mobs spawning in it, and it is exactly like Ethos system in terms of size and in terms of distance do other grass patches.

Is the spawning algorithm different in SMP than SP?

It's quite frustrating, since it is a very expensive build. I've been building for at least 2 days with close to no result.

I think this tread would fit better in the Redstone forum.

I thought about it, and was unsure. So if a moderator thinks its in the wrong place, by all means move it.

Matt90765: Have you tried this, or is it something you think that might work?

It's on multiplayer, but it's a private server. I can try to get you in, but can't promise anything.

So, the concept is rather simple.

I have a castle with a gate. The gate is 6 blocks wide, and I need to build a 6 block wide and about 30 blocks long drawbridge. The idea isn't original, others have done it. But of all the drawbrigdes I've seen, they are only two blocks wide.

I am using sand, so that I don't need sticky pistons, and so that It's impossible to spot through the water (exept the current...)

But how the hell am I supposed to power it? We are talking about an area of 6x30 something with pistons only. How am I sopposed to turn them on and off all at once? Is it doable?

Minecrafts redstone physics allways have a way of comfusing me. Any help is very appriciated. If someone can actually pull this off, I am in awe.

posted a message on How many wolves do you have?
    I have 8 wolves.

I have an island where I dug out all of the sand and replaced it with dirt, in addition to level the whole Island out. The whole island is in addition covered with torches, and is rather large.

So, when night comes there are allmost no hostile mobs to see, but a shitload! of neutral mobs. Great way to collect wool, pork, feathers and leather.

At most, I've had 8 wolfs spawning at the same time, in close approximility to each other, and as this is a multiplayer server, we share. It seems like they sometime spawns in packs of 8.
