Once again I have to say I wasn't even aware of the Aether's existence before I posted this. Also their idea seems to be more celestial based while mine is more sort of nature based. This is also just a rough outline, there could be all sorts of useful blocks and I haven't put nearly as much time into this as they put into theirs. I just wrote this up in half an hour a couple months ago and left it at that because I'm horribly lazy. I do think mine kind of fits the current tone of Minecraft better but whatever, they seem to want it more. xD
Portals of course, I wrote that in the closing notes. The portal would have to have some other activation method than fire naturally. A redstone pattern of runes you stick to the side of the obsidian or something like a ladder I was thinking. Could be plenty of other ways to activate it though.
Yeah, I don't often check the suggestion forums anymore. I only noticed that Aether thread after I had posted this so I'm not trying to copy it or anything. This idea I came up with around the time of the Halloween update and has been gathering dust in a word document on my desktop. Just figured I might as well post it and be done with it. =P
This is an idea I had for a new dimension, the idea is to have one that is pretty much the polar opposite of the Nether. This dimension would be focused more towards agriculture, enchantments, and alchemy when/if Notch adds the later two.
The Astral Shard
World: The world consists of floating islands over an infinite drop. This world has one sun and three moons. One moon is the antithesis of the sun and is of a dark red color, the second moon, the smallest, travels faster west to east on slightly skewed orbit and is orange in color. The final moon travels south to north and is the largest of the moons traveling at 1/3 the speed of the day cycle and is gold. Compasses and clocks may not function in the Astral for obvious reasons however with a glance at the orbital bodies one can quickly ascertain the direction they are headed.
Moon colors, size, names:
• Orange – Smallest, Nuntis
• Red – Middle, Sanguine
• Gold – Largest, Aurum
Flora: The Flora of the Astral is unique in hue and properties. Grass is a light blue shade while tree leaves are various shades of purple. The trees grow in shapes drastically different from the overworld and more small plants are to be found. Mushrooms are all luminous and grow much like the mushrooms native to the overworld.
Inhabitants:
• Wogs – Four foot tall anthropomorphic toads. Wogs are garbed in simple attire and tend to leave feet uncovered, make ‘flip flop’ noises as they walk and occasionally croak. Non-aggressive and helpful towards strangers, Wogs carry a simple wooden staff around and have a tendency to heal injured players and animals. When attacked a Wog’s first instinct is to run (attempt to stay at least 8 meters away from offending player at all times.) When a player continues aggression closing in on or cornering fleeing Wogs the Wog will attempt to fight back.
o Drops: Nothing, Herbs, Staff (Rare)
• Wisps
o Teal
Incorporeal
Non-aggressive
Drops: Nothing, astral powder
o Red
Incorporeal
Aggressive
Able to float through doors, countered by rare powder/powder mix in a line on threshold
Drops: Nothing, astral powder
• Giant Hummingbirds – Serve as flying mounts for Wogs.
• Slepit(Need a better name!) – Large hedgehog like creatures one meter high, hostile. Slepits are only active at night and due to their brushing up against vegetation during their wanderings their spikes are covered in leaves, berries, flowers, etc. At dawn they bed down wherever they were standing, their camouflage makes them appear to be bushes and any unwary creature to disturb them will immediately be the focus of their ire.
Other notes:
Astral soil reduces the growth time of plants by 1/3
Possibly different crystals could be mined for use in enchanting items
Portals would be bright yellow or dark blue possibly so as to stand out
Wogs would not be able to heal while moving and heal only half a heart a second to stop from being overpowered
Multiple Wogs can heal one target and they will heal players and aggressive mobs depending on which is closer
So that's all I've come up with so far, thanks for reading! Feel free to post further ideas or suggestions.
I don't believe that slimes are officially implemented yet. He plans on making them able to climb walls which frankly terrifies me, spiders jumping on me from high ledges in caverns is bad enough let alone ooze dropping on my head from nowhere. o_o
I like the idea of making a monster drop something useful for a change. Most of the stuff the others drop I can either make, find, or get with less risk from chickens.
And Sir Nomington, the reason that things like guns aren't put to a vote is because in game design, democracy should mostly be thrown out the window. Sometimes your players really don't know what's best for the game they're playing. The idea of guns in Minecraft is a fantastic example of this.
Absolutely agreed. I have seen on suggestion forums in the past where people suggest bringing tanks into fantasy games and saying it would be a great idea... not kidding. The argument for guns isn't good or bad but kind of so-so. I don't think they should be in the game personally and I'm a fan of the older styles of gun like revolvers and flintlock pistols but I just don't feel they would fit in with Minecraft well. TNT works because it is intended mostly for mining but seeing as most creatures would be at a sorry disadvantage in the face of a gun or siege weapon* and it's only purpose would be some sort of advanced PVP device and an easy button for survival mode I don't think they should be added.
*Also you can't add humans or goblins with guns because if you run into them early in and all you have is a sword and bow you are S.O.L.
Cool Jampp, I only suggested poison arrows off the top of my head as pertaining to my idea so I wasn't attempting to steal your idea. My idea for the arrow is just damage over time as opposed to hallucinations but maybe there could be some hallucinogenic shroomage in the game you can weaponize. xP
Yeah, I never read the original but I do recall reading about how he was ugly as sin. Dracula was based on Vlad the Impaler who was a brutal and sadistic murderer who killed thousands in horribly gruesome ways. All that romantic nonsense and perfect complexion came afterward. But this is the suggestion forums huh? Why are we having a discussion here? xD
Yeah I know all that. Vampires and werewolves have always been of interest to me and my nerd friends but ever since the Twilight series came out by god all the preppies are getting into it! Vampires have gone from dark evil creatures who turn to dust in the sunlight to brooding young men with abs like a professional body builder designed to make girls buy posters and shirts and anything else they can plaster his face onto... it's lame. I have now disowned vampires as an interest because of those books and movies. >=O
@Gutterpunk The update on friday was supposed to add some apparently but we have yet to see said update. =P
In the immortal words of Terry Pratchett: "There are many kinds of vampires. Indeed, it is said that there are as many kinds of vampires as there are as many types of diseases. Which presumably means that some are virulent and deadly and others just make you walk in a funny way and avoid fruit."
Vampires in the folk tales they originate from have so many powers and so many weaknesses you wouldn't be able to list them all! It's like every story talks about a different creature. This I'm afraid is a result of the Twilight saga turning a once great monster story into some stupid trendy thing for teenagers... =/
I would want to see more detailed character models before this happens so we can see our fancy clothing in all it's glory. Not super detailed mind, just something that doesn't look like the little wooden boy from the Tick cartoon... I do like top hats though, and goggles. =D
Aye, I think airships do fit a fantasy theme well. Shouldn't have them run on magic though because frankly where will it end? Before too long people would be tying their shoe laces with magic and using it to pick crops. Magic needs to be looked upon like nuclear power, it's nice to have and certainly makes life easier but there are some things you just don't use it for due to the risk. For an airship give me a good honest clockwork or steam powered engine any day. =D
It's not a bad idea especially with flying critters coming soon making the skies not a safe haven for your floating palace. Airships need to be tough to craft and more of an end game sort of thing since they need to require massive amounts of materials to produce. Also this will probably take a long time to even be considered by Notch due to technical constraints. I've always been a fan of steampunk and nothing quite represents that ideology better than the airship... except maybe goggles...
Mushroom soup is not currently in survival last I heard, don't know if that means it will never be added but that's what I mean by that. Still you're right and duly noted, soup slipped my mind when I wrote the original post. =P

Changed the original post somewhat so people would stop posting the same thing I've already explained. >_<
