Wouldn't it just make sense to implement something similar to minecraft forge, and then make the texture pack and mods button open either the texturepacks or mods folder, making mods as easy to add as texture packs? Seems like the easiest way to do this.
Nothing beyond the concept itself of that is "easy".

" but ask that you elect a representative from your respective modding groups"... lets see how well this blows over. Personally I think someone such as Flowerchild should make his voice heard during this.
I agree with this.

I know how to install most mods. ModLoader and Forge are included in that. Though, they should not be installed at the same time. Feel free to PM me if you need help with mod installation.

Perhaps an effect_hopper. Adding a hopper to either your tool or your weapon will give it the effect of pulling items in immediately when they drop. Killing mobs will immediately pull the drops into your inventory (assuming slots available) rather than first dropping them onto the floor/ground.
For tools, this could be useful for such things as precariously-placed ores (like diamonds over lava), or perhaps the tediousness of glowstone gathering if you haven't been able to get ahold of a silky gem. Lumber axes taking down large trees immediately pulling the logs into the inventory instead of waiting for the leaves to decay to drop your logs. Scythes immediately pulling in drops from leaves or grass.
When added to a bow or arrow (should it even extend to this), allows for the collection of drops from afar. For instance, killing ghasts and getting their tears regardless of whether or not they're above lava. At the cost of your arrows, of course. Perhaps a bit OP in that sense (maybe configurable, should it be added).
And if you'd want to take it further, maybe adding another hopper will immediately pull in EXP (at the cost of a second modifier).

Examples of idea:
- Sword with smite is heavier/thicker for smashing through brittle undead.
- Sword with both smite and looting comes out to be thick/heavy with gilded edges.

I've not had any problems with it myself for most things. What are the unwanted results?
No need to hold that back. If you have something, best to share it immediately.

You just install forge the normal way, then patch the Forge profile.

Major release numbers (1.6, 1.7, etc) are the general numbering scheme for Texture/Resource packs. It's not the same as with mods, where minor releases (1.6.1, 1.6.2, etc) would often cause mods to need re-building. There are rarely more than bugfixes in minor releases, and there's usually no major code changes within MC that would cause resource packs to stop working.
So, when we say 1.6 or 1.7 in regards to resource and texture packs, you can normally rest assured that it'll work for all of the following minor releases. The one and only thing you need to wait for (for full set of features to work) is either MCPatcher (recommended) or Optifine. MCPatcher brings the pack to full potential, while Optifine adds only some features that MCPatcher does. If you're into mods, both MCPatcher and Optifine should play nicely with most of them, but I don't know how well both at the same time would work.

There's a list of needed textures for both 1.6 and 1.7 here.

Random CTM for Iron Bars seemingly forces the rendering to change regardless of whether or not you specify any renderpass. Causes you to see both sides of the bars when looking at one side. Screenshots below:

Are you trying with the version downloaded from this page, or one that you built for yourself? The one I downloaded here only allows me to make 1 dust per, and only with redstone. Also, the crafting not working is not a server problem. It's happening on both single and multi player for me.

Hmm. The set time for feathers to drop is about half as often as eggs by default. Check the configs and set the number to 0 for the fastest drop time (just to see if it works at all). If it's not crashing, then it should be working fine.

In any case, adding this to the mod list. A link to which can be found in my signature. Keep up the good work.

They don't work in 1.7.2. They work in 1.6.4 and below. In order to have both a 1.7 version and a 1.6 version, you make a new profile (as Spencerio said) and set one of the profiles to use 1.6 instead. That's it.

You're using Forge 953 or later? If so, then I don't know. It's working fine for me.
