Its also lagging like none other, almost unplayable, any known reason for this?

I wanted to update on our attempts to get a server going on the grid and it, sadly, won't be possible. Darn.

I can't even diagnose the problem from my end because I can't even get in the server because of the timeout. I will see if YDS has any answers. Server should have restarted.

Multiplay did some crazy (daisy?) update today and ****ed it again.

Keep working hard on the grid, I will talk to our friendly VPS guy and get the ball rolling on a temporary VPS solution since my confidence in this grid is pretty low ATM.

Yeah the lack of borders is going to screw all these new players, they will be building bases outside of the borders.

    You could try kMod.

I would love to try kmod. The only issue is our server host restricting us to their own interface. In February we will probably switch over to VPS, where we can start implementing the improvements you guys want :tongue.gif:.

We need at least basic server commands, and now I can't get onto the minecraft site...

Seems like a minecraft outage right now...

You can ask what their port speed is before buying. Also ask if they host minecraft servers. You'll want an umanaged vps, You'll get root access and you can just do what you like. (Just an fyi we offer root access but I'm assuming you've already checked out our site.)

Also check out the vps section on WHT: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=103

Your servers seem interesting. Why does it list that mods are required? If there is full SSH access couldn't we run the vanilla client, or anything for that manner?

What kind of VPS should I look at? For some reason every VPS fails to list their down/up speed. I think alot are meant for web hosting.

Our current VPS uses an external interface to access files/config. Not sure why they can't let us SSH into a little folder on the server... but yeah.

Maybe I should look into VPS? What size VPS is reccommended?

Honestly $88 /mo for a colo doesn't sound that bad to me. you may be better off to rent a dedicated server from a high end company like Softlayer or Gigenet if your having that much trouble. I'm surprised you've had trouble with just 20 players, you should be able to run that many on a vps with no issues. Good luck with your search!

We're running a VPS but have no actual control over the server files and plugins. We have to put in support tickets and generally deal with nonsense. It's a control thing. We go down for 5 days every time notch updates because they want to run the server on an older client.

You might be right about the dedicated server. It could be cheaper.

We're running a 20 person server and have had insane issues with every host we've tried.

At this point, we need to find a good co-location deal and put a 4U rack in.

I'm assuming we will need 10mbps down and 1-2mbps up?

    We will build the server.

So far I found a decent co-location center with 10mbps duplex, but don't think that's necessary. It's 88$ a month which seems a bit high.

Also, I can get 8mbps down and 1mbps up at home through my cable company. But I'm worried that home connections don't have the same latency as data centers.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what options I can explore?

At my last sentence, I meant I expected SMP to be more impressively like Classic. I don't mean that you could build stuff and couldn't die. I mean that the same feeling isn't there. But this is just BETA, so I expect it to get better. Especially that hopefully some servers will stop closing down, so servers a few months old feel.. Lived in. And unique, exciting to explore. I remember my first few days playing Classic, I found this giant cave world someone made with a bot. But me and my friend scaled the sides, way up and built a base camp. And then the cemetery I built with secret passages into everyone else's bases. Well, this is all off topic. It mostly stems from annoyance that it takes so long to gather materials unless you get "lucky" and hit a diamond deposit with a straight-down dig.

Yes, you're right about changing it yourself, to a degree. If I don't have any support from anyone else in the community, its going to be very hard to do anything but go around aimlessly killing people. Also, the fact that you can't mute people is an annoyance. I really don't want to hear some kids spamming Yomama and Chuck Norris jokes in chat.

I'll give the server another try when it switches to 1.2.

I hope you give us another chance. Many have remarked that our server brings them back to the first days that they played minecraft.

You will find that there is far more order than you would expect in a free server like ours - in many ways there is far more order than there is on many peaceful servers. The twisted alliances and aspect of retaliation make for a society that has a tenuous order and close friendships.

Stealth and scouting are key. Information is the most powerful weapon on the server and it can be bought, sold, and traded. Trust is currency.

    You'll enjoy it. I know I have.

Yeah map resets are like trying to raise taxes. It will never be popular but sometimes has to be done.

Anyways, I will do everything it takes to get these problems taken care of - but the LAST thing involves a server reset.

Would you guys be okay if we just saved this map and started a new one? We can always come back.

I personally don't want a map reset and I know those of my faction feel the same way. I've invested a lot much time in my base to have it die from a cause other than being raided.

I can maybe code the plugin you need if you can give me more details.

We need an auto-restart plugin (can't be a wrapper) for hmod build 133.

Could also indicate we need a map reset. We have alot of new players, and now understand the server much better and can probably provide a better admin service. If we reset the map it might stop the restarts if we keep the borders tamed... just a thought.

Thanks for the link. That explains it perfectly. It also explains the extreme lag we were having before MP installed the SSDs. The memory leak ate the rest of the system memory, allocating it to nothing, and so the system was forced to use virtual memory but the seek time on standard HDDs is extremely low, which causes a loss in performance when it uses memory. But, the crashes also make sense to be related. I sent the info to YDS. This should also be taken up with MP. Considering it is java, there should be a way to run minecraftserver with max and min memory limits. If that doesn't work, then MP should also consider allocating more memory to their MC customers!

We need to stop speculating and start looking for solutions; after all, none of us are making 250k working at sun microsystems programming java. Still talking to multiplay. Forced restarts will be the crutch until we can get a permanent solution. The issue is getting a decent mod on multiplay - hey0 doesn't support the auto-restart plugin we need.
