is there a way to limit the range of the hook?

Why would you want to do that?

Anyway, I added a version to do this. You can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwum1DVR9SNNYjhEQ1NSa2JzTms/view?usp=sharing

Change the maximum length using "/gamerule grapplingLength 10" or whatever length you want to set it to. Set it to 0 to be infinite.

    Installation

This mod installs like most other forge mods:

    • Install Minecraft Forge for version 1.8 (Tested on version 1.8 - 11.14.4.1563)
    • Put the .jar file in the .minecraft/mods folder

    Configuration

Some people think this mod is unbalanced, so here's how to configure the mod to make it more fair

    /gamerule grapplingLength <maximum length of grappling hook>
/gamerule grapplingBlocks <blocks which grappling hook can attach to>
/gamerule grapplingNonBlocks <blocks which grappling hook can't attach to

    Examples:

    /gamerule grapplingLength 10
    /gamerule grapplingBlocks minecraft:cobblestone,minecraft:stone
    /gamerule grapplingNonBlocks minecraft:cobblestone,minecraft:stone

    Reset to defaults:

    /gamerule grapplingLength 0
    /gamerule grapplingBlocks any
    /gamerule grapplingNonBlocks none
