What I enjoy doing in Minecraft: I like digging, it's pretty awesome. I like making a place to put the stuff I dig up. On occasion, I fancy a good tree punching. I also like venturing into the great unknown.
Anything else I'd like Vanderburg to know: Bacon. Is. Tasty.
If the pattern continues in every direction you see every block. If you stand on the crack between the two blocks you're mining, when one breaks away you won't drop. No more pesky lava bathes or void drops. Takes twice as long, but seeing every block and increased safety make it win imo. Obviously it works horizontally as well, if you just want to mine particular levels.

Only problem with that is if lava flows in from the side when you dig the second block. If you are quick and block it off you would not die, but it would throw off the shaft, and the tedious back and forth of the mouse would make it a very slow process.
I carry a bucket of water for this. Throw it on the wall and if you're quick its obsidian before it flows, if not its still extinguished and you shouldn't have taken much lava damage, if any. If you didn't catch it before it started to flow, all you have to do is throw a block up on the opposite side, break the plug and quickly hit it with water or stop it with a block.
It's easy to pull off and bares no higher risk than horizontal techniques or spelunking, for myself at least. It's not really a con of the style, it can happen with any method of mining at that depth. Albeit, the confined space does make it worse if you're not prepared. As long as you're alert it shouldn't be an issue.
If it's a deep pool of lava, you can always terminate the shaft early. I don't normally clear out huge pools of lava for the few layers between its bottom and bedrock anyway.
As to the tedious back and forth of the mouse.. Well, I put the cross hair directly on the center of the crack between the two blocks while looking straight down and I don't have to move the mouse. I can also see all 8 new blocks as they come into view without moving the camera, which I like.
Yea, it is a little slower if you do it vertically, since you have to hop your way back to the top. For me ut breaks up the monotony, to be honest. I also save on torches by collecting them on the way up. hop.. hop.. hop.. hop.. hop.. whack torch.. repeat.. Of course, you can use this method horizontally and still cover all squares. Which wouldn't require any extra time spent in movement that wasn't through potential mineral patches. Plus you can just do it on level 11 and up, avoiding 99% of the lava.

Odd. I could log in earlier, but now it just sticks at "Logging in..." until it times out.

Mind your envious eyes, deviant.
I seem to be doing a pretty terrible job of keeping this to myself. So, you might as well.
