Mm. You're being pretty helpful there, now aren't you?

And I've been playing on my MacBook Pro, no problems at all so far.. From the crash it looks like the problem comes when it's swapping buffers, so maybe when it crashes, try to see if there was anything onscreen that there usually isn't? Maybe a mob, or a certain type of block or something?

Personally, I laughed when I saw your title, and I think that's exactly what you were going for... SMP does need OPs, badly. But the extent that they should affect what goes on is really the debated point... If someone digs through the walls of your base, steals all of your diamond, and then sets the place on fire before running away, then are they being an asshole or just playing Survival the way it was meant to be played?

But hasn't Notch found out a way to disable (current) hacks, by adding -hax and -speed to the server txt file?

Actually I'm pretty sure this is just something implemented by WoM, and was not created at all by Notch. It doesn't even work very well to stop hackers, because they can just disable the checks. (And if your part was still written in your sarcasm-y mode, then ignore this)

Make sure you enter straight, or else you'll spin around unpredictably.
If the boat is completely still, you don't need to do the space+arrow manuever. Just don't move, click on the boat to get off, and jump.

How do you make the water move in like that from all sides? I've seen other people do it, but I never really bothered to figure out how it worked.

Edit: And shortly after...compacted it, and for a proper airlock youll prolly always approach it from the same side anyway, which means the door will always be open and so I removed the 2 outside switches:

I like compacting things further than they should ever be compacted. (This is what happens when you end up working with RS Latches for too long)

Wow. Just wow. Not sure how you guys come up with such elaborate stories, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

For me... I suppose I'm going to be the person who digs deep underground, finds some Redstone, figures out how to build an extremely elaborate trap, and then throw myself at the feet of one of the larger cities hoping that they will let me in in exchange for the plans for the trap. It'll be fun. Not sure how often people will be on, though, but I guess we'll see.

Also, please, PLEASE, use quotations marks (") and NOT backticks (`) for quotes...

OS (32/64-bit): Mac Snow Leopard, 64 bit (Not all that surprised I'm the first mac user)
    RAM installed: 4 GB
CPU (clock speed): Intel Core 2 Duo (2.53 GHz)
    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
FPS (normal gameplay, render distance:FAR, Graphics: FANCY): Max Range is 30-120, Generally stays around 50-60
Nature of any crashes you might encounter: None

Looking at the previous posts, it looks to me like the speed of your processor is the thing that most affects your FPS. I think that, due to almost every single person having dual-core processors, the (hopefully) future threading will help out almost everyone. And if you think about it, Minecraft is not a graphics intensive program. It displays cubes. Getting a better graphics card, while it might help a bit, is not going to speed things up that much. Comparing it to Crysis (which looks beautiful) isn't really the right way to go. The slowdown in Minecraft is chunk updates. Hence, faster processor = better FPS.

The admin should have the final say in what's griefing and what isn't, and the offending player could get a warning.

Thus rendering the entire discussion moot because in the end, it's down to the individual and nothing anyone else says matters.

No. That statement does not naturally follow. You're saying 4 + 4 = 5. That's for dealing with exceptions when they arise such as harassment (probably not often), the admin will use the basic guidelines most of the time. Did the player attack first while on probation? Then they're a griefer. If not, it's just PvP. It's stupidly simple, and VERY clear. This system is very open, as long as it's not meta anything goes. Total anarchy. I'm not even sure where you got that, you're either misinterpreting me or just twisting what I say into what you want to hear.

I actually agree with Zuriki... I think that no matter what happens, the admins on the server will always be forced to look at the situation and decide on what the consequences should be. Sure, there might be some guidelines for what they should do in such and such a situation, but when it comes down to it, the admin still needs to look at the situation and decide what to do. Maybe some servers will be run differently, and they have an extremely long, strict set of rules that lays down every situation, but most admins will still need consider things separately, no matter what.

redstone wire only works 300 blocks away, fyi.

    :White: :--+: :RedShroom: :White: :--+:

    :RedShroom: = redstone dust
    :--+: = red torch

you know what that does? it keeps the signal going another 25 blocks so FU

Do some research before embarrassing yourself, next time.

I ran an experiment (details in logic gates thread) and determined that a 5-clock stopped functioning after I ran roughly 300 blocks away.

But again, as someone (I believe) has already said, as long as there are enough people in SMP that all the chunks stay loaded, then it should work out fine. Also, because you will (presumably) have someone on both sides, then it will work for 600 blocks. And then of course, you can't discount custom servers, which I'm sure will find a way to keep blocks loaded, and redstone working.

I'm pretty sure ice counts as blocking light, so underwater with a frozen top should theoretically be pretty dark (thus triggering the sounds).

I honestly don't think that architecture is that important to this game. Yeah, it is useful for making things look pretty, but if you want to make a safe place that is free of griefers, then that's a completely different skill entirely. I guess it's still architecture, but not the same kind of architecture.

No, I'm afraid that's an intentional effect of the new "simpler and easier to understand" system.

I actually somewhat like the new system. Some of the circuits I build rely on the crazy, somewhat-broken nature of the wires. I think that the real problem is that the wires LOOK like they're connecting to things, even when they're not.

The only gate i've used there is the memory one, and a bunch of NOTs. No lie, friggen wiring the place from my tower to the ocean, and then routing it all to work out is SUCH A PAIN.

Oh my god, I feel your pain. I built something more complicated (ie 4-bit shift register), and the hard part wasn't getting the logic gates to work, the hard part was making it so that the wires didn't touch.

I'm a simple man, trying to practice the simplest of logic gates so I can get a grasp (a simple one) on all this fancy circuitry.

This leads me to my question: is there any way of making an OR gate without feeding a NOR gate through a NOT gate?

Not really... Considering the only basic gate we are given is the NOR/NOT gate (the torches can be either, depending on how you use them) there isn't anything that you can do but use them.

    Quote from Phrap »
As a sneak peak, and sort of a complaint, I present this.

    ALL OF THAT FOR...

Seriously? Making a 10-Button Interface is SO MUCH work. The wiring is at LEAST 10 times my Tower's size. But alas, once i'm done you guys will be getting a nice treat for all my work.
    :iapprove:

What on earth is it you are doing with those buttons? I can see they're labeled with positions and stuff, but I can't imagine what a tower would be needing such an intricate system for...
