im not sure as how to make a 2x2 stream of 4 directions be moving (not still), is it like the 2x1?
as for the more detailed map, i understand more of it now, thanks.
though the lining up of the bottom half and top is a little fuzzy, i get a good idea.
great design. though too add for practicality, caves need to be lit up, etc, to force the spawns into it.
and to not have the problem I am having where nothing spawns, not even passive farm animals :sad.gif:

Just tried digging to bed rock from my mob grinder, sat around down there for a while... couldn't see anything spawning around me... tried 10 blocks above bedrock.... nothing. 10 above that... still nothing. Not in my grinder.. not in miscellaneous caves around, close or far... devoid of life once again. im not sure whats going on now... any other suggestions that may be worth testing?

getting suggestions and/or answers is exactly why i made this post.
aside from flipping from peaceful back to normal, the only thing that has done it for me is to travel a great distance, then back again, enough for the 4 chunks to delete and restart the mobs.
however again, this is not practical for sitting afk at a mob spawner :sad.gif:
how do you make 'texture packs' Nihilias?
If i could TEMPERARILY make cobble act like glass and stone etc I could see if they are just getting caught, or if a cave is stealing all my mobs or what not.
my trap is huge, so some may have despawned before dying, i put one of the killing knives closer to the trap, and there was minimal improvement, but more tests need to be done to see if it actually improved.
but for now maybe i'll get some sleep :sleep.gif:

Try switching to Peaceful for a moment to despawn mobs, then back to your difficulty of choice.

while this is not bad advice, and this sometimes works.
This is not helpful to my problem.
I thank you for your advice.
But my problem is that they stop spawning when I go AFK.
If the solution is to be not AFK, then that defeats the purpose of leaving my monster machine on while i go to class/sleep/etc.

with this working, perhaps there is a glitch in the monster spawning algorithm that my computer didnt catch?
if it's not a permanent thing, would it have to be bump in the coding?
I don't know java or programs for that matter :sad.gif:

lower levels huh? .. well when i did my 'see through walls' test. I was about 10 blocks under sea level.. not all the way down. Even though i could see all the way down there, i wasn't 'in range' for mobs to spawn down there. So give me a few minutes, and i'll reply to this on my findings.

lower levels as in less mobs overall/slower i think he means.
also, the distance that mobs CANT spawn around you is spherical, but the max distance they can spawn is a 128x150x150 rectangular prism with you at its center. (roughly)
so even if your 10 blocks below sea level (55) monsters can spawn at bedrock and at sky limit. even bedrock 74 ish blocks away.

I'm gonna blow the f*ck out of the ground area in my 150x150x128 cube to force all spawns inside my trap. hopefully will yeild better results, if i can figure out wtf is stoping my spawns >.<

I believe during a recent update, notch slightly tweaked all mob spawns to lower levels.

I've been reading about lower levels as well, but no monsters or passive animals is BS.
something is wrong. imo. if a person (not me, the guy above) uses a texture pack to look through walls and cant see anything at all, something is amiss.
and by something I mean mobs D:

    HELLO!
    I'm new!
If this is not the right place to post this please direct me to where I need to go.
*(search isn't working for me either, so just telling me to search it isn't gonna help me :sad.gif: )

I have been making monster traps for awhile, and had quite a bit of success. however, the problem I kep having is the output drops to 0 after a short while, (1h ish).
This makes going AFK not helpful :sad.gif:
I origninally thought it was my trap.
items getting to me ? yes
monsters that spawn gettting dead? yes
monsters spawning anywhere in sight? no (low res creates misty back drop to see silouhettes of monsters in my wide trap)
this problem persisted after my wide trap, into my tower trap, into my massive sky trap, and now my compact trap. (most roughly based on similar stuff to keirshar's designs.)
Now, I thought it had to do with my trap, and maybe It does, but even passive mobs are not spawning.
I ran blindly across my world for 2 day cycles (non-stop) before I finally found a chicken.
My sky trap is based on a lake/ocean. with a desert to the west, animals spawn on the few patches of grass i got there, yet, after being afk, NO animals, and NO monsters, and most importantly, NO ITEMS await me when I get back.
BEFORE you just say my trap is ****, I need to say that I got 500 items in 30 minutes, compared to about 40 items in the proceeding 3 hours. then nothing for another few hours.

TL;DR - MY TRAP WORKS!!!! for about 30 minutes. then NOTHING!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

    Why is this?
Does anyone else suffer this same problem?
    Does anyone have a solution?

Or am I just as alone here as I am in my world waiting at the base of my Sky trap? :sad.gif:

    EDIT:
I am still curious as to any solutions to this issue, however by some odd occurence, my trap has been working for the last hour and a half!
I've been tossing out all the crap (feathers, arrows, bones) and keeping only the sulfur and string,
after approximately 1.5 hours, i've gotten around 18 stacks of sulfur, and 2.5 stacks of string.
    (all figures roughly rounded)

Is this fixed? I don't know, I'll have to test this out more!

    Quote from Sinstrite »
I have a mob trap that's only one floor and uses lava blades - spits out 8700 items an hour or so with the latest update.
I've been experimenting with everything listed in op, before thread was out, and lavatraps combined with the science of spawning-knowhow is the fastest way to get items in my own opinion, after testing of many many traps for the beta versions new spawning algorithms.

    dood!
    holy crackamole!
How big is this? I thought mine was big, (not done) and I get only about 1k /hr.
but my issue is not my trap not working, it's that if i go afk, mobs stop spawning, both passive and hostile.
do you know anything about this?
does ANYone know anything about this?
Ima make a topic bout this :sad.gif:

I seriously still have no idea wtf to use them for. I've just been using them on picks and shovels, and maybe an axe that lasts forever :biggrin.gif:
I dont know what to spend them on otherwise :sad.gif: sword? i use the rapid fire bow, armor? I got like 20-25 stacks of iron >.< Hoe? iron seems sufficient. house of diamonds? (oh god no, already working on a gold sanctum for my spawner >.>

posted a message on What is the most efficient mob trap in Beta 1.2?
    HELLO!
Horray for my first post ever on any forum!!!

Now that the congrats are out of the way, I figured this would be a fine place to post my first .. um.. post?

I have tried out many mob traps in the last little bit, many of them Keirshar designed.
ALL of them were good. HOWEVER!
I am finally at my wits end with this problem.
After about 30m-1h of time of items coming to me, it seems like EVERYTHING stops spawning.
and I mean EVERYTHING. I walked around for 2 day cycles and not a monster nor animal spawned.
    WHY IS THIS!!!>>>????
My current trap I am using is the Sky trap, modeled similar to Keirshar's design. I can rake in 2 stacks of sulfur in 30 minutes if im lucky, but get no sulfur for 3 consecutive hours afterward. >.<
I thought the problem might have been with my trap, but when I noticed no animals spawning I started feeling unsure :/
PLEASE! IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!

Now; as for the actual topic. My Opinion:
All mob traps work on the same principles. It is how well you apply them that gauges how good they are.
    example:
    1. Lighting up / drowning / halfblocking everywhere else to force monsters to spawn into your death-trap seems to be more important persay, then any shape of trap you make.
    2. having more area where monsters will spawn allowing up to the 200 monster limit = bigger is better.
    3. When you have a trap big enough to house 200 monsters at once, Killing efficiency is most important. killing monsters fast enough to make room for more spawns becomes more important than size, as being bigger wont mean more monsters at any given time.
    4. of the 4 natural ways a monster can die, (drown - slowest but safest for items, good for small/med traps, and not work intensive, bad for massive traps due to slow kill speed.) ( cacti - unreliable as plants are apparently hungry for tnt materials >.> and everything else, but can be used to kill those nasty wall huggers.) (Fire/Lava knife - a well placed blade of lava kills fast and allows the (important) stuff to fall into collection canals, efficient, fast, works for all sizes and shapes of traps. only loses to:) (Falling - this is the fastest most instant way a monster can die from what I've seen. how to make them fall into a canal to transport their items 100% i've yet to figure out. but Fall damage is the BEST killing form for maximum sized traps, due to being instant/fast, monster #'s are dropped fast to let new spawns in. NOT as effective at less than maximum sized traps. NOT effective vs spiders in chutes.)
    5. by balancing (area) (monster #) (speed of kill) (collection) (forced spawning) (transportation of items) etc, will result in better results than only what "Type" of trap it is.

As for a favourite, Basing my opinion on everything I've listed (I probably forgot something, it's 5:30 in the morning >.<), I would have to say that for MAXIMUM efficiency, a Tower, or Sky Trap, one that is tall/many layers would be the best. FOR MAXIMUM OUTPUT.
    but:
Seeing as how this forum is actually about what we think the most efficient mob trap is, I think I did not cover anything about convenience. MASS mob traps are impractical due to size and time to make them.
So I think TOWER Traps are the most 'efficient' mob trap, a Tower Trap based near the bedrock (with the 24 block radii distance), under/+ over the sea/lake would be the most efficient, as hollowing out rock to make your tower gives rock for the above sections, the lake gives a natural spawn deterant to other spots on the surface yeilding greater spawns in your trap.
Downside to this: not much for diamonds :/

TL;DR - I need help with a problem of stuff not spawning. - my opinion on best trap, - my opinion on most effiecient trap.
but really, If you are not gonna read it, why would you bother with me anyway? :biggrin.gif:
